Gordon Ramsay chooses Top 5 on 'MasterChef'

Tracy Kontos has become the latest contestant to leave MasterChef. Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot eliminated the sales consultant from the cooking show on Monday night following the most demanding pressure test yet. Tracy went head-to-head with Adrien Nieto and Jennifer Behm in the pressure test, which saw the trio having to scale and debone a salmon, cut at least ten portions from it, and then cook one of the portions to "perfection". Gordon pointed out that the thickness of her salmon pieces was uneven, while the piece she cooked needed a few more minutes on the heat. He told her: "You have been amazing across the board and right now is where it ends. The passion that comes out of you is extraordinary. Continue following your dream." Graham told her that he knows times have been tough and she lost her job but she (more) »

'MasterChef': Surprise elimination after childhood food challenge

3 August 2011 2:26 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Derrick Prince and Christine Corley have been eliminated from MasterChef. Web designer Derrick and single mom Christine were both axed from the competition in a surprise double elimination on Tuesday night. The remaining eight cooks had been tasked with recreating Gordon Ramsay's favorite childhood dish, tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Unfortunately for Derrick, the judges thought the gorgonzola in his tomato soup overpowered the entire dish, with Graham Elliot saying: "It's like tomato and cream and bacon hanging out at the schoolyard and then the gorgonzola bully comes and beats the crap out of them." Gordon said the task had been creating a tomato soup, not cheese. However, the judges encouraged Derrick never to give up on his culinary dreams, with Joe Bastianich offering to meet him for an espresso in New York to talk about (more) »

'MasterChef' delivers "most difficult pressure test ever"

2 August 2011 2:23 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

MasterChef delivered a shock result on Monday night when Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot chose not to eliminate anyone from the competition. Christian, Adrien, Jennifer and Derrick were all given a pressure test after losing this week's task, but good offerings from everyone meant no-one was axed. Gordon had described making a perfect cheese soufflé as the "most difficult pressure test" in MasterChef history, saying it was a task that can "put the fear of God in any professional chef". Each of the chefs had been given 90 minutes to make as many soufflés as they wanted but they could only present one to the judges. Bastianich explained in his TV Guide blog: "All four soufflés were shining examples of perfection - cookery at its best! This is what we want to see in this competition, and (more) »

Giuseppe Morisco has been eliminated from MasterChef in an episode that saw the contestants cooking for the judges' mothers. Granite salesman Giuseppe served as leader of the Red Team in the task, which involved cooking for Gordon Ramsay's mom Helen, Joe Bastianich's chef mom Lidia, and Graham Elliot's mom Kate. Each team had to devise an appetizer, entree and main course that would appeal to all three mothers. Giuseppe and Blue Team leader Tracy were each given two minutes with the women to ascertain their likes and dislikes. Giuseppe - who picked Alejandra, Ben, Suzy and Derrick as his teammates - chose a menu of mixed green salad with plum balsamic vinegar served over basil polenta, spaghetti carbonara and apple pie. His teammates expressed concern that Giuseppe was using dry pasta in his carbonara instead of making his own fresh pasta, (more) »

Erryn Cobb has become the latest amateur cook to be eliminated from the MasterChef kitchen. The 26-year-old PR worker from Chicago was axed by Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot after serving up a burned steak in this week's aphrodisiac challenge, which required truffle as the main ingredient. Erryn admitted to the judges that there was nothing he liked about the dish, which was served with hard vegetables basted in a truffle butter sauce. "You had one hour," said Gordon. "I am speechless." Erryn had landed in the bottom three alongside Adrien and Jennifer. Adrien had served seared fillet with dried chilli and fig mushroom sauce and truffled pureed potatoes, while Jennifer plated coddled eggs and truffle with pancetta, three cheeses and Thai pepper. Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot sent Kang home after she failed to impress in either a layer cake pressure test or an hors d'oeuvres challenge at an exclusive rooftop cocktail party. Speaking about the cocktail party challenge, judge Bastianich told TV Guide: "The guests were used to fine foods and have sophisticated palates. Well-heeled and well-traveled, they not only expect the best, they eat it every night. "This food needed to be smart, sexy and savory, without any gimmicks." Of their decision to axe Kang, (more) »

Max Kramer has become the latest contestant to be eliminated from MasterChef. Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot sent the 18-year-old student home on Tuesday night after he lost the pressure test challenge to single mom Christine Corley. Max and Christine found themselves having to cook fillet steak in three different ways - rare, medium and well-done - after the Red Team lost a challenge that involved cooking sausage for bikers on the Pacific Coast Highway. The Red Team, led by Esther Kang, chose to make beer soaked pork sausage with drunken onion and pepper relish. The Blue Team, led by Tracy Kontos, made spicy Italian pork sausage with caramelized onions and molasses. Both teams had problems during the challenge. Alvin Schultz has become the latest contestant to exit MasterChef. The 28-year-old retail manager from Houston, TX, was sent home by Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot on Monday night after an elimination challenge that involved cooking a coffee-based dessert. Alvin - who practises molecular gastronomy - fell into the bottom three alongside Jennie Kelley and Max Kramer after serving coffee filled beignets with coffee chicory pudding. Gordon had called his coffee sauce "extraordinarily bitter", describing it as a "coffee blood clot". Graham added: "Things like this give what I do day in, day out a bad name." Following his elimination, Gordon told Alvin that although he is courageous, he needed to understand the basics before he became adventurous: "Get that right and you could be an amazing cook." 'MasterChef' eliminates another finalist

Tony Scruggs has become the first MasterChef contestant to exit the show following a pressure test. The 51-year-old truck driver was eliminated by Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot on Tuesday night after falling short in a pressure challenge that involved cooking ravioli. Gordon said that his pasta was too thick and lacked the "visual wow factor" the judges were looking for but urged him not to give up on his culinary dreams. Tony said: "I came into this as somebody who is getting too old to do what I've done all my life. I love to cook. I want to open a little restaurant with my wife. I don't need to be a rich man. I want to go through my life doing what I love. They gave me respect which is worth more than the money and I'm truly grateful for that." Jennifer Behm and Esther Kang »

MasterChef has eliminated two amateur cooks, narrowing the pool of contestants from 18 to 16. Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot cut two hopefuls on Monday night's installment of the Fox culinary competition following a French-themed elimination cooking challenge. Angel Moore-Soukkay and Mark Raffaelli were sent home in a surprise double elimination after falling into the bottom three alongside Erryn Cobb. Gordon had called Angel's fruit tart and custard an "embarrassment to France", saying it had been "executed horrendously", while Mark committed the "cardinal sin" of serving raw flour in his mashed potato. "I feel privileged and honored I made it this far," said Angel. "America, I can't cook French food. If you want an egg roll, some fried chicken or collared greens, call me!" (more) »
