The 5 Best Music Videos Of The Week

Each week I find myself writing about how much I hate performance-driven music videos but present you with an exception. I think it’s time to admit defeat and realise that there is actually a large population of artists and music video directors who can get creative and pull them off. Although I feel a little foolish for having this initial hatred for them I am also thrilled to see a number of videos surprising me each week as well as what feels like a sudden influx of them. It’s great to see that all hope hasn’t been lost just yet. I can’t believe I even included a video which features both Jessie J and Nicki Minaj (I have nothing against Ariana Grande, yet). There’s just something really empowering about watching an all female ensemble come together and celebrate different kinds of femininity and female sexuality simultaneously.

Broken Bells believe we are not alone in 'Control' video: Watch

  • Hitfix
James Mercer and Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton), collectively known at Broken Bells, definitely believe that we are not alone. In the video for “Control,” the two perform before footage of space travel, crop circles, images of the earth from space, UFOs, and other signs that there is life out there far beyond our own life on Earth. The combination of real news footage and the footage of the same pink orb that has appeared in every video for tunes from “After The Disco” creates the a cool, interplanetary vibe that fits the spacey “Control” perfectly as Mercer sings about not being in control. The duo resumes its current tour Sept. 26. The video is below the tour dates. 09/26/14 - New York, NY - Rumsey Playfield 09/27/14 - Philadelphia, Pa - Electric Factory 09/28/14 - Richmond, Va - The National 09/29/14 - Nashville, Tn - Ryman Auditorium 10/01/14 - Athens, Ga - Georgia Theatre 10/02/14 - Birmingham,

Film music novices Alex Ebert, Arcade Fire and Pharrell Williams are among the first-time nominees competing at the 14th World Soundtrack Awards on Oct. 25, the culmination of Film Fest Ghent. The first-time nominees will be joined by Wsa perennials Alexandre Desplat and Hans Zimmer at the annual event, the first of its kind, which takes place at Kuipke, a velodrome that’s converted into a concert hall for the occasion in Ghent, Belgium.

Not only will awards be handed out for composer of the year, original film score and original song written directly for film, but the evening will feature the Brussells Philharmionic, as is custom, during a program that will pay tribute to a couple of career honorees, including another pop artist-turned-film composer, Cliff Martinez (“Traffic,” “Only God Forgives”), and Lifetime Achievement Award winner Francis Lai (“A Man and a Woman,” “Love Story”).

Lorde To Curate, Contribute To The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 Soundtrack

Even if the movies themselves are nothing special, Ya adaptations always seem to have the best soundtracks. The best part of every Twilight film was looking at the accompanying albums to uncover some real gems (artists included The Black Keys, Broken Bells, Muse, The Bravery, Sia and St. Vincent, to name a few of many), while the Divergent soundtrack offered some great Ellie Goulding tracks.

The Hunger Games franchise, too, has been pretty stellar in terms of its musical stylings to date. The first film featured a rocking Kid Cudi song called “The Ruler and the Killer” in addition to some Arcade Fire and Taylor Swift, while Catching Fire incorporated Coldplay and The National for a more epic feel. Now, we’re hearing that the featured artist on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack will be none other than “Royals” breakout Lorde.

The Grammy-winning artist will hand-pick each and every song for the soundtrack,

The Shins' give new song 'So Now What' to Zach Braff's new film 'Wish I Was Here'

The Shins' give new song 'So Now What' to Zach Braff's new film 'Wish I Was Here'
The Shins have a great tune "So Says I," but now it's time for a hazy "So Now What." The indie rockers -- who have been curbed more recently as James Mercer has pursued other musics with Danger Mouse in their project Broken Bells -- contributed the new tune to Zach Braff's "Wish I Were Here" film, which went the crowd-funding route last year. As you'll remember, Natalie Portman famously put headphones on Braff's head to the tune of The Shins "New Slang" in the former "Scrubs" star's directorial debut "Garden State" (2004). "It'll change your life, I swear," her character Sam says. Well, it certainly did change the band life of The Shins. So the circle of life continues. "Wish I Was Here" also has new songs from the likes of Bon Iver, Coldplay and Cat Power, plus previously released songs from The Head and the Heart and Hozier.

Broken Bells' lyric video for 'Leave It Alone' sums up the song's isolation

Broken Bells' lyric video for 'Leave It Alone' sums up the song's isolation
Broken Bells’ lyric video for the stark “Leave It Alone” is an appropriately bleak clip with a coldness that matches the downer lyrics. The video features Broken Bells’ "signature pink aesthetic," according to a press release, in a geometric form that morphs from shapes into human parts as it moves through an isolated landscape. If you haven’t noticed the pink motif before, don’t feel bad. Here it is again in the minimalist video for the audio for the new album’s title track, “After the Disco,” and the “pseudo video” for first single, “Holding On For Life.” It all ties in with the...

Album review: Broken Bells' 'After the Disco' is a melancholy beauty

Album review: Broken Bells' 'After the Disco' is a melancholy beauty
On the excellent “After the Disco,” Broken Bells —aka Danger Mouse and The Shins’ James Mercer — wonder how we got here. Not physically, but metaphysically. Song after song on the synth pop-driven set asks hard questions for which there are no answers. More consistent than their self-titled 2010 debut, the atmospheric “After the Disco’s” often uplifting synth lines smooth the path for the alienation and loneliness of Mercer’s lyrics. It’s a tough album to listen to at times because there’s nothing but cold comfort, and not much of that, as Mercer touches again and again on the distance between the...

Broken Bells' 'After the Disco': What the Critics Are Saying

Broken Bells' 'After the Disco': What the Critics Are Saying
Broken Bells' Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) recently told Rolling Stone that the duo's sophomore effort, After the Disco, is "a pretty sad record." But Mouse and his counterpart, The Shins' James Mercer, go beyond melancholy in their second studio album, as they explore deep, dark themes with a space-rock sound. Out Feb. 4, After the Disco consists of 11 psych-pop tracks -- a modest release largely on par with the duo’s self-titled debut, which received a 2011 Grammy nomination for the best alternative music album.
