A short synopsis for The Wolverine

17 August 2012 5:13 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

20th Century Fox has launched the Facebook page for The Wolverine, and although it’s somewhat short on content at the moment, it does contain a brief synopsis for the film, which provides us the first official word on the plot for next year’s X-Men spin-off :

“Based on the celebrated comic book arc, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.”

The Wolverine is currently filming in Australia under director James Mangold (Knight and Day), with Hugh Jackman once again reprising his role as Logan for an adaptation of the classic Japan-set 1982 limited series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. Jackman is joined in the cast by Will Yun Lee (Total Recall) as Harada (a.k.a. the »

Official Synopsis for The Wolverine; Director James Mangold Tweets Reports from the Set

16 August 2012 9:36 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The reason I have hope for The Wolverine is because it has distanced itself from X-Men Origins: Wolverine as much as possible.  It takes place in Japan so American audiences aren't used to seeing a superhero movie in that setting.  More importantly, the story will have no connection to Origins, and Hugh Jackman said it won't be overloaded with mutants.  Today, Fox has released a brief and official plot synopsis.  It doesn't reveal any major details, although I'm curious how Wolverine will be "forever changed" by the events in this film.  He's already lost his memory, so what will connect this movie to X-Men? Hit the jump to check out the synopsis along with some tweets from director James Mangold about what's happening on set.  The film also stars Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, and Rila FukushimaThe Wolverine opens July 26, 2013. Hugh Jackman Says The Wolverine Is Not an X-Men Origins Sequel

15 August 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

Just last week, we brought you some behind the scenes pictures of Hugh Jackman as a rather disheveled looking Logan on director James Mangold‘s set of The Wolverine, starring Jackman, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, Will Yun Lee, Brian Tee, Hiroyuki Sanada and Hal Yamanouchi.

While recently speaking with CoventryTelegraph, Jackman confirmed that The Wolverine is not a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, rather a stand-alone film:

“We’ve deliberately not called it Wolverine 2 because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture. With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it’s going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic. The approach to character means we won’t be overloaded with mutants and teams and the like, so it’ll be more character-based. I think in many ways it will feel like a completely different X-Men film.”

For those of us who didn’t exactly fall in love with X-Men Origins: Wolverine there’s hope on the horizon for its anticipated follow-up, The Wolverine. Actor Hugh Jackman, who has played the carnal Canuck in all of the mutant’s big screen outings, says the film won’t be a direct sequel but will instead feel like its own movie.

In an interview with Total Film magazine, Jackman was asked where the movie will fit into the landscape of the other X-Men films.

“We’ve deliberately not called it Wolverine 2 because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture. With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it’s going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic. Hugh Jackman Confirms The Wolverine Is a Standalone Story and “Won’t Be Overloaded with Mutants”

13 August 2012 9:10 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

X-Men Origins: Wolverine should be wiped from history and all copies of it should be buried next to the Atari E.T. landfill.  The filmmakers behind the sequel, The Wolverine, probably aren't willing to go that far, but they seem to agree that it's best to leave Origins in the past and let their new film stand on its own.  We've already seen from set photos that the movie will be breaking away from the previous X-Men films in terms of Wolverine's look, but Hugh Jackman has now confirmed earlier reports on how The Wolverine will stand apart from the awful 2009 spin-off. Hit the jump for more.  The film also stars Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, and Rila FukushimaThe Wolverine opens July 26, 2013. Hugh Jackman Is Disheveled in New Images from the Set of The Wolverine

Production on The Wolverine is finally underway, and the images and videos from the set keep pouring in.  We previously saw video of an action sequence, images of Hugh Jackman’s new shorter hairstyle for the follow-up, and subsequent images of Jackman on a “Canadian Rockies” set in Australia, where the pic is being filmed.  Now images have surfaced that show yet another side of said Wolverine, with Jackman looking plenty disheveled sporting a scraggly beard and unkempt hairstyle.  The bulk of the story finds our hero in Japan, but I’m unsure as to how “Hobo Wolverine” fits into the plot.
