Were you familiar with the source material for Ghost in the Shell?

I saw some of the anime in the 90s but I can’t say I was a fan. It was a part of my history, but I wasn’t like one of those die-hard fans.

How did you become involved in the film?

It’s actually an interesting story. It’s a very long story so I’ll try to make it short. I worked with one of the producers in a little indie film before that. And he introduced me to the director of Ghost in the Shell,

Japanese audiences praise Ghost in the Shell remake and are happy with Scarlett Johansson’s casting

Rupert Sanders’ controversial (in some circles) adaptation of Ghost in the Shell has received its fair share of good reviews in the West [read our review here], despite the ‘white-washing’ claims hanging over it. However, it hasn’t connected with audiences domestically. Its opening weekend of $19 million was very disappointing considering its $110 million budget, and the audience dropped 60% in week two. Ghost in the Shell is doing better internationally ($92 million at the time of writing), and the film has now opened in its original home country of Japan where its being received very favourably.

Yahoo! Movies Japan rated the movie 3.5, praising the film’s visuals but not so much its story. The Hollywood Reporter spoke to some Japanese audience members who echoed that statement.

Early Ghost in the Shell concept art featuring Margot Robbie as The Major

After years in development, Hollywood’s live-action Ghost in the Shell finally hit cinemas this past month, although it failed to live up to expectations financially and is looking at a loss of around $60 million – put down to the whitewashing controversy surrounding Scarlett Johansson’s casting as The Major.

Before Johansson came on board the project, another actress was being lined up for the lead in Margot Robbie, and we know have a look at some early concept art from Jeff Simpson and Nivanh Chanthara featuring the Suicide Squad star as the character…

“I spent a tiny amount of time doing pre-production work for the new Ghost in the Shell,” said Simpson. “These were done back in 2013? 2014? When Margot Robbie was gonna be the lead. Only spent a few days on it, but it was fun.”

“I’ve worked on the very first batch of environment concept art for the Ghost in the Shell movie,

7 Classic Anime That Hollywood Should Remake After ‘Ghost in the Shell’ (And One That They Really Need to Leave Alone)
It was always only a matter of time until modern Hollywood resigned itself to remaking anime. Which isn’t to suggest that the uniquely Japanese medium is somehow unworthy of being used as fodder for Western blockbusters — on the contrary, anime has provided some of the most progressive, adventurous, and visionary filmmaking of the last 30 years — but rather to acknowledge the palpable whiff of inevitability with which Paramount is releasing “Ghost in the Shell.”

It’s not like studio executives are obsessive fans of the franchise, it’s not like former Paramount CEO Brad Grey bought every new DVD of “Stand Alone Complex” as it was released in the United States and can walk you through every detail of the Laughing Man case, it’s not like the people in power were just patiently waiting for the entertainment climate to warm up to the idea of a star-studded Major Kusanagi

‘Ghost in the Shell’: Original Anime Director Mamoru Oshii Defends Scarlett Johansson’s Casting
It has certainly not been a smooth road for Paramount’s release of “Ghost in the Shell,” to say the least. Criticized as yet another example of Hollywood whitewashing, the Scarlett Johansson-led film has faced nothing but controversy leading up to its March 31 release date.

While Johansson’s casting has been decried by many — including George Takei and Margaret Cho — one notable defender has been the original director of the classic 1995 anime version, Mamoru Oshii. In an interview with IGN, Oshii voiced his approval of Johansson and displeasure with fans who took issue with her portrayal of The Major.

“What issue could there possibly be with casting her?” Oshii asked. “The Major is a cyborg and her physical form is an entirely assumed one. The name ‘Motoko Kusanagi’ and her current body are not her original name and body, so there is no basis for saying that an Asian actress must portray her.

Watch the Insane First 5 Minutes of Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell is getting ready to hit theaters in a little more than a week, but for those of you who are feeling a little impatient, you can check out the first five minutes of the movie online right now. Paramount decided to give fans a little taste of what's to come by releasing the clip online today, and it is very heavy on the action. Despite the controversy surrounding her casting, it also seems like Scarlett Johansson is kicking some serious butt as Major and looking good doing it.

Paramount initially debuted the clip during a Facebook Live streaming event but they later released a slightly extended version of the clip to their YouTube channel. In the video, we see Major hanging out on a rooftop listening in on an important meeting that has to do with "cyber enhancement." Things quickly get out of hand and the bullets start flying.

A fan thought he made a huge discovery when he noticed that Yukio (from The Wolverine, played by Rila Fukushima) gave Wolverine his death scenario using her precognitive powers, and was able to connect this with Logan. Now keep in mind, her only ability is to see when a person dies. Armed with this knowledge, lets check out the exchange between James Mangold (director of The Wolverine and Logan) and the fan.

It’s the part in The Wolverine when the character of Yukio – played by Rila Fukushima – has a premonition about Logan’s death.
