Born in Nashville, Tennessee and raised between Chicago, Illinois and Kentucky, Matt broke into acting at the age of 5, performing in a plethora of stage-plays in theaters across the United States. His father is of African American, Native American, English, Irish, Dutch and German-Jewish (Ashkenazi) ancestry. His mother is of African American, Native American, French, and Caribbean ancestry. He is the grandson of Emmy Award Winner, Burleigh Hines.

After a career in the theater, he went on to book several commercials, before transitioning into theatrical acting. After relocating to Los Angeles, California, Matt began pursuing theatrical acting roles, screenwriting, and producing. In December of 2014, he launched Rebel Maverick Productions, a production company he founded to produce quality feature film, television, and digital media content that resists traditional standards and conformity.
