J.J. Abrams says Star Trek 4 is his “favourite Star Trek story that we’ve had”

22 July 2016 12:53 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Star Trek Beyond may have just opened in cinemas [read our reviews here and here], but producer J.J. Abrams is already talking up the next instalment, which Paramount officially announced last week.

Star Trek 4 will see Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk coming face-to-face with his father George Kirk, with Chris Pine reprising his role from the 2009 reboot, and Abrams has told EW that the plot for the fourth movie is his “favourite Star Trek story that we’ve had.”

“One of the reasons that I’m hoping [Star Trek Beyond] does well is so that we can, without question, get that movie made. It really is an amazing story. It’s really the reason we made the deal with Chris Hemsworth as soon as we could because we really wanted that story to be told, so fingers crossed.”

'Star Trek Beyond' Beams Into Theaters Alongside 'Ice Age 5' and 'Lights Out'

21 July 2016 2:42 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Two more sequels arrive this weekend and, like several sequels this year, both are looking to underperform when compared to the previous installment in their respective franchises. Star Trek Beyond and Ice Age: Collision Course represent the 21st and 22nd wide release sequels this year after only four (Finding Dory, Captain America: Civil War, The Purge: Election Year and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) have been able to outperform their franchise predecessor at the domestic box office. Also opening this weekend is the new PG-13 thriller Lights Out from producer James Wan as well as the moderate roll out of Fox Searchlight's Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie while Hillary's America expands nationwide into over 1,200 theaters. Targeting a first place finish is Star Trek Beyond, the third film in the rebooted franchise and the first with someone other than J.J. Abrams at the helm. Those duties fell on the shoulders of »

Last month, young actor Anton Yelchin tragically lost his life in a freak automobile accident, and now producer J.J. Abrams has confirmed that Yelchin won’t be replaced in the role of Chekov for the fourth Star Trek film, which was just announced yesterday.

““I would say there’s no replacing him. There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better,” Abrams told Postmedia Network, before revealing that discussions are ongoing with screenwriters J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay as to how they will deal with the loss of Yelchin within the script.

William Shatner Won't Return in Any New Star Trek Movies?

20 July 2016 12:02 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In just two short days, Star Trek Beyond will hit theaters, the third adventure since director J.J. Abrams rebooted the franchise with the 2009 movie, and the 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. Ever since this movie series was rebooted, a point of contention for many fans is that William Shatner, the original Captain Kirk from the groundbreaking Star Trek TV series, was never brought back for a cameo appearance, even though Leonard Nimoy has returned as Spock. During a new interview, producer J.J. Abrams revealed that fans will likely never see William Shatner in this new version of the Star Trek timeline.

The Toronto Sun spoke with J.J. Abrams, who remained on as a producer on Star Trek Beyond while Justin Lin took over as director. The producer revealed that he has heard several pitches throughout the years about how to bring William Shatner back into this timeline, but nothing has worked so far. »

J.J. Abrams Doubts That William Shatner Will Ever Appear In The New Star Trek Timeline

20 July 2016 4:05 AM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

One of the more exciting moments of the 2009 Star Trek reboot was the revelation that it wasn't disregarding what came before, but starting a new timeline (now referred to as the Kelvin timeline). This transition was made easier by having Leonard Nimoy reprise his role as Spock to help guide the younger versions of the classic Star Trek characters. Given that Nimoy reprised his role, there has been hope from some fans that William Shatner may be able to do the same and return as James Kirk in a future film, despite the character dying in Star Trek: Generations; there were even several rumours that Shatner would have a role in Star Trek Beyond before the film commenced production. However, according to producer J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two installments of the new timeline, Kirk's death in Generations is the main reason for Shatner's absence.  “Obviously it’s Star Trek, »

Producers won’t replace Anton Yelchin in ‘Star Trek 4’

20 July 2016 2:19 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Just yesterday, we reported that Paramount are pushing ahead with a fourth Star Trek movie, confirmed just days ahead of the third movie, Star Trek Beyond, hitting cinemas. Chris Hemsworth is said to be returning to play James Kirk’s father George, but one actor that won’t return, sadly, is Anton Yelchin, who passed away last month. The news of his passing was tragic, but it looks like his role of Chekov will not be recast in the fourth movie. Producer J.J. Abrams spoke with The Toronto Sun.

“We knew going into this movie it would be a bit of a heartbreak just because of Leonard [but] we had no idea just how devastating events would become. I would say there’s no replacing him. There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”

We think that this is absolutely the right decision. »

J.J. Abrams reveals that Chris Hemsworth will return as George Kirk in Star Trek 4

16 July 2016 7:31 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Back in May it was announced that Paramount has already started development on a fourth entry in its relaunched Star Trek franchise, despite the fact we’re still a few days away from the release of the latest chapter, Star Trek Beyond.

Naturally, there are very few details available on Star Trek 4 at present; Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are said to be locked in for a return, and according to Scott Mantz of Access Hollywood, it seems we can add another name to that cast.

Mantz is reporting on Twitter that J.J. Abrams has confirmed that Chris Hemsworth will be reprising his role as George Kirk, the father of Pine’s James T. Kirk, having portrayed the character in the opening scenes of Abrams’ 2009 reboot.
