Paradigm Signs Jorge Michel Grau (Exclusive)

Jorge Michel Grau, writer-director of “Somos lo que hay” (We Are What We Are) and one of Mexico’s seminal new genre pic filmmakers, has signed with the Paradigm Talent Agency for representation.

Playing Cannes 2010 Directors’ Fortnight and a hit with fanboys – who burst into applause several times at a Sitges Fest screening – fest juries and more general audiences, the Wild Bunch-sold “Somos lo que hay” established Grau immediately as a genre movie maker with an original voice, here exploring family dynamics through a cannibal movie.

A Chicago Festival Silver Hugo Jury Prize winner that also took best feature and screenplay New Wave Awards at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, “Somos” also established Grau from the get-go as a Mexican/ U.S. crossover talent, sparking a hit 2013 U.S. remake from Jim Mickle, “We Are What We Are” which segued from the Sundance Festival to Cannes’ Directors Fortnight.

Adding to its robustly building roster of Hispanic/Latino crossover talent, Paradigm has signed Carolina Guerra for representation.

A Colombian actress, star in David S. Goyer’s “Da Vinci’s Demons” and former 2005 Miss Bogota and model, Guerra is already well-known to U.S. Hispanic TV viewers for co-hosting Univision’s 2009 music talent show “Long Live the Dream” and roles in hit telenovelas, such as Telemundo’s “Hilos de amor,” In Latin America, she jump started her career as an MTV Latin America presenter and host of “Colombia’s Next Top Model,” which, airing on Caracol TV, one of the highest-rated shows in Colombia in 2013.

Another month, another horror film about possession.

This one takes us down to Columbia where a dysfunctional family finds themselves trapped in a secluded house that has a dark evil within. Best known for horror film sequels, Spanish director Victor Garcia was tapped to direct The Damned (formerly known as Gallows Hill) to bring a certain authenticity to the film. But not even he can breathe any life into this imitation horror film.
