Biography
Born in Mexico City, Jimena is a Graduate of the BA of Communications (Andrés Bello Catholic U. -Caracas, Venezuela in 1999) and of the Master in Media Arts and Production (Film, Video & New Media UTS 2001*). Also interested in theatre directing, Jimena has already directed two plays in Australia, and is currently attending a Master in Theatre Studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris.
She has written, produced & directed her own works, several of which have received awards, both in Australia, and internationally¬: Her latest short film, ¬´¬Andante ma non troppo¬¬ª, has already been awarded five times - Best Actor, Best Editing, Best script, Best Directing, and the JuryÄôs Special Award to the Best Film in the series of festivals from the yearly ¬´¬without Frontiers¬¬ª program ¬: Golden Gate (San Francisco), Chicago, New York, Granada and Strasbourg, respectively.
Jimena is a former student of Mexican script writer and director, Guillermo Arriaga (Amores Perros, 21 Grammes, Babel, The Burning Plane), who up to today is still her mentor and friend.
Her latest idea is a rather ambitious feature film, entitled ¬´¬The Company¬¬ª, an adaptation written by her and her Australian associate and story-boarder, Mark Curnow. The project is based on Tasmania resident, UK writer Arabella EdgeÄôs novel of the same name (option rights to be eventually re-negotiated)¬:
A tale where Hannibal Lector meets Lord of the Flies, The Company is a portrait of a descent into madness and cruelty; the terrible human cost of one manÄôs inability to see or accept the consequences of his actions.
Our story brings a new perspective on an iconic Australian story: On a night in October 1628 outcast apothecary Jeronmius Cornelisz flees Amsterdam aboard the Dutch East India Company ship Batavia, after he is discovered engaging in sadistic and heretical acts. On board Jeronimus encounters Lucretia Van den Mylen, a young woman traveling to join her future husband in the East Indies. She becomes an obsession for him; a woman willing to defy him.
The Batavia lost after a tempest, the boat founders at the Abrolhos Archipelago in Western Australia, up until then being terra incognita. After the Commandeur leaves them on a hopeless quest to find a rescue ship, Jeronimus and a pitiful group of greedy merchants and traders are trapped in the island.
In these circumstances, Jeronimus quietly assumes command¬: using the influence of the shipÄôs naive Predikant, Jeronimus works at first to organize the survivors, soon only to increase the chances of his own survival.Äô¬: With Cornelisz in control, an extraordinary reign of terror begins, leaving those who survived wishing they had gone down with the ship...
Jimena is currently on the search for producers and collaborators for this incredible adventure, which, like ¬´¬Andante ma non troppo¬¬ª, is based on a true story.
