Antisocial (2013)

Written by: Chad Archibald, Cody Calahan

Directed by: Cody Calahan

Cast: Michelle Mylett (Sam), Cody Ray Thompson (Mark), Adam Christie (Jed), Ana Alic (Kaitlyn) Romaine Waite (Steve), Ry Barrett (Chad)

Ever think that social media is going to be the death of us? Maybe, but it’s not going anywhere. Aside from the positive aspects of bringing people back into our lives that we would have otherwise lost touch with forever (that’s not always a good thing), it becomes relevant fodder for filmmakers. One of the many things that I love about the horror genre is that any thread of social commentary that runs through with the monsters or the murderers on the surface, gets filtered into its purest form and we see the absolute most extreme impact of what happens with the ordinary when things become extraordinary (usually in a really,

Antisocial Blu-ray Review

Director: Cody Calahan

Cast: Michelle Mylett, Cody Ray Thompson, Adam Christie

Certificate: 18.

Running Time: 92 Minutes.

Antisocial is part Rec, part Cabin Fever with some elements of every generic horror film going thrown in. This melting pot of source material does not result in a coherent plot or film. There are brief glimpses to elements that could have been moulded into a better film however, they are fleeting and rare.

The story starts with some interesting comments on social media and how we are all ‘zombies’ to the phenomenon. It also highlights the dark side of the media with news reports debating cyber bullying which is obviously something of a relevant topic in today’s society – unfortunately these messages get lost pretty swiftly.

Sam, our female protagonist, gets dumped publicly before having to attend class despite it being New Years Eve; personally I don’t know of any schools open during the holiday season.

‘Antisocial’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Michelle Mylett, Cody Thompson, Adam Christie, Ana Alic, Romaine Waite | Written by Cody Calahan, Chad Archibald | Directed by Cody Calahan

[Note: With the film finally set for a home entertainment release next week, here's a reposting of my review of Antisocial from its UK debut at last years Frightfest]

It’s often been said that people today wander about the streets in a zombie-like state – with their faces buried in their phones texting their friends, tweeting and checking out who likes what on Facebook – oblivious to the outside world. But what if this reliance on technology, and social networks in particular, became societies downfall? What if the thing we shared online was more than just information? That’s the question posed by Antisocial.

Sitting somewhere between Night of the Living Dead, The Crazies and The Social Network, Antisocial sees five university friends gather at a house party to ring in the New Year. What they don’t know is the end really is nigh, as an epidemic has erupted outside and around the world. With nowhere else to turn,

A Death Party with Antisocial: A Movie Review

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Breaking Glass Pictures. **one minor spoiler. Director: Cody Calahan. Writers: Chad Archibald and Cody Calahan. Cast: Michelle Mylett, Cody Ray Thompson, Adam Christie and Ana Alic. This reviewer is familiar with director Chad Archibald, from this work on Neverlost. This feature was a Canadian shot thriller. Archibald's latest is also a Canadian feature, but Antisocial is more horror than thriller. This indie horror feature, at its heart, is a zombie feature. But, Archibald and writer Cody Calahan work in a meta-message, about the perils of social media. Beware the internet! This title also works in some satisfying horror elements. The production on this feature is also well done, despite some of the cast and crew being relative newcomers to film. Overall, Antisocial is a terror filled horror feature, with only a few slow bits. The story for Antisocial begins

Film4 FrightFest 2013 Review - Antisocial (2013)

Antisocial, 2013

Directed by Cody Calahan

Starring Michelle Mylett, Cody Ray Thompson, Adam Christie, Ana Alic, Romaine White and Ry Barrett

Synopsis:

Five university friends gather at a house party to ring in the New Year. Unbeknownst to them, an epidemic has erupted outside, causing outbreaks around the world.

Antisocial plays like your average paint-by-numbers teen horror movie but it does try to make a satirical statement about how we live our lives through social media. Imagine it like 28 Days Later if the virus was spread through Facebook rather than monkeys - and this is one of many reasons why the film doesn't work.

Director Cody Calahan asks a lot of his audience to buy into this pretty asinine plot in which a virus spreads through social media website The Social Red Room, turning its users into a crazy mob. As the plot progresses and you discover more about the virus,
