First, some housekeeping. We're going to be a bit light this week. I'm taking Christmas Day and the day after off from Meme. We'll have Briefs every day except Christmas, but we will bring you some content that day. And snicks is liveblogging Days of Our Lives Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. From our dysfunctional AfterElton family to yours, have a great holiday, be it a Merry Christmas or just a day off from work.

When Gareth Thomas visited Mickey Rourke in Los Angeles, he found something that under different circumstances might have been a bit creepy.  “I stayed with Mickey for a few weeks in his house. I walked into his living room and he had 10ft framed pictures of me all over his walls. It was so strange. If he wasn’t playing me in the film I would have been a bit freaked out but he said he »

Weekend Meme: Sam Champion Marries In New York, "Stars In Danger" Brings Abs and Speedos, and Why Nate Silver Must Be the "Gay Statistician"

Congratulations to Sam Champion and Rubem Robierd, who married in New York City with family and friends in Sam's apartment Friday night. They're planning a larger party and celebration over New Years in Miami.

Well, this is unique casting. For the big budget remakes of the cuckoo Left Behind series, Chad Michael Murray is in talks to star. The previous versions starred Kirk Cameron.

How I Met Your Mother will be back for another season, after Jason Segal agreed to sign on for one more year. This of course means that we get to see Barney reform and experience life as a married man, but it also means that we have to go another #%@$@ year waiting to find out who the mother is.

Christmas No 1: James Arthur has killed off the usual good v evil battle | Sam Wolfson

20 December 2012 2:59 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

In the past it's been a fight between a credible underdog and a low-culture behemoth. This time it's between two different shades of credibility

At this time of year, human beings demonstrate a spectacular ability to make consumerism feel Christmassy, disguising capitalism's cold unfeeling heart with tinsel and cinnamon Air Wick. Christmas is a festival that starts when a tax-dodging multinational changes the colour of their coffee cups from white to red, and ends when we indiscriminately dish out three-for-two gift packs of purulent No 7 moisturisers to our female family members. Only we, the great human race, could call it the season of loving and giving.

In no Christmas tradition is our ability to sentimentalise more evident than the race for a Christmas No 1. Essentially a marketing exercise by the record industry (some years they sell 20 times as many singles as they would in a normal week), in our recent »

Joe McElderry on being Digital Spy's ultimate 'X Factor' act - video

Joe McElderry has expressed surprise at being voted the ultimate X Factor act by Digital Spy readers. The 21-year-old, who won the sixth series of X Factor in 2009, topped a poll made up of 27,000 Digital Spy users back in September.

Speaking to Digital Spy ahead of his one-off charity performance of rock musical Tommy, McElderry thanked fans for the "very flattering" accolade, but admitted he had no idea why he had been picked. "I don't really compare myself to anybody else that's been on the show, but it's nice to know people have voted us as that," he said. "Very flattering. "I don't know why they would have picked me, but thanks a lot anyway guys." Joe McElderry: 'Tommy musical not about bettering X Factor'

9 November 2012 11:00 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Joe McElderry has said that his challenging role in rock musical Tommy is not necessarily about "proving [him]self" after The X Factor. The 21-year-old, who won the sixth series of X Factor in 2009, will play the eponymous deaf, dumb and blind pinball enthusiast in a one-off charity performance of the show, which is based on The Who's 1969 double album.

Speaking to Digital Spy, McElderry admitted that while he was initially concerned about the stigma attached to X Factor winners, the choice to take a role "different to what people would expect" was more about proving something to himself. "I didn't want to do a show that people would go, 'Oh, I knew he would do that', and when it was first announced I was doing this, everybody was a bit like, 'Wow'," he said. "At first it was about (more) »

Joe McElderry: 'Performing own songs on X Factor could be dangerous'

Joe McElderry has admitted that he thinks contestants performing their own material on The X Factor could be "dangerous". The 2010 winner told Digital Spy that he likes the concept of competitors performing their own songs, but warned that it could have a negative effect on their chances when going into the live finals.

"I think it's good to go in with your own material, but I also think that it's very dangerous - if your song has charted before you've even got through," McElderry said. "But then again, if you don't get through Boot Camp but your song's charted, you've (more) »

Morning Meme: PETA Slams Lady Gaga Again, "The New Normal" Finds a New Home In Salt Lake, and James Franco Rocks Dreads

Just a note that today is Labor Day in the U.S., so we will have a very limited schedule. Just this Meme, our TV on Tap column, and a Briefs this afternoon. Also, there's our Ultimate Slash Madness Tourney to check out. The second round of voting is opened over the weekend. We'll be back full strength tomorrow!

PETA is slamming Rihanna and Lady Gaga over their wearing of fur and animal skins. “Wearing reptile skin is creepy and callous, and it makes her look even more out of touch. She and Lady Gaga seem so desperate to be freaks instead of recognized for their talents that you have to wonder if they realize that they are being laughed at.” Oh, PETA, I think you continue to mistake where that laughter is directed.

You have 11 lives. Use them well.

David Alan Grier did an extensive interview with NPR that was mostly about Porgy & Bess, but he did take time to address his classic Men On Film characters from In Living Color. "Damon Wayans and I would rate movies using snaps. The fun of In Living Color was exposing black culture, and in that sketch, gay culture, that I don't think America had ever seen at that point. I had already done Dreamgirls on Broadway, and being in a musical and working with other performers who were gay, I was privy to that vocabulary backstage. They were being themselves. So a lot of it was hijacked from what I heard in the theater and what was permeating around. Now at that time, if a gay person was going to read you — to tell you off — it was always accompanied by snaps. Now I don't know if it was a gay thing, »
