Novak Djokovic played for Serbia at the Davis Cup Final 8 Showdown in 2023, but he won't participate in the upcoming 2024 Qualifiers in February.
Novak Djokovic loves to play for Serbia, but the older he gets, the fewer tournaments he can enter. It's not a huge problem because he actually led them to the trophy one year, when he proved to be the country's hero.
He's one of the best players in the world, and being smart about his schedule is a vital part of that. The Davis Cup traditionally hasn't got the best scheduling because it's usually inserted in between events, which is part of why so many stars skip it.
The upcoming qualifiers, for example, won't feature Djokovic, but that's not surprising. He generally skips this part of the Davis Cup and focuses mostly on the finals if Serbia qualifies.

Novak Djokovic is one of the world's greatest tennis players, but he has always been keen to take his talents and wisdom outside the tennis sphere.
Djokovic is a renowned rare breed of multisport athlete, having previously taken part in a charity football match in South America. He has also extended his tennis hands to the golf course where he teed off a terrific shot on par four in the celebrity-filled all-star match at the Ryder Cup.
But outside the sports genre, Djokovic is also a linguist and proudly boasts of his versatility in grasping several languages apart from his native Serbian. Djokovic is proficient in at least four more languages, including English, Spanish, French, and German.
The nature of the tennis tour involves constant traveling and visits to new, unfamiliar destinations. As one of the most articulate and eloquent speakers in the tennis world, Djokovic is fond of mastering...

How time flies that it is now seven years since the date of Rafael Nadal's one and only trip to Queensland state to play the Brisbane International.
After spending nearly a year on the sidelines, Rafael Nadal is ready to retake centre stage. The 37-year-old underwent a delicate operation on his hip after tearing the psoas muscle during a second-round defeat to Mackenzie McDonald at the 2023 Australian Open.
The Spaniard completed an intensive practice session in Kuwait at his eponymous academy, where he defeated French Next Gen star Arthur Fils, whom Nadal personally invited to get him up to speed with the physicality and intensity of the tour.
Having returned to Spain, Nadal has since played practice sets with multiple other Atp players like Jan-Lennard Struff and Emil Ruusuvuori as the new season is fast approaching. The 22-time Grand Slam champion will be on the plane to Australia in about a week.

The 2024 United Cup is upon us, and we have many nations going head to head as many former and current players, such as Lleyton Hewitt, will serve as team captains.
The United Cup features many nations competing against each other in a pretty unique team format. Each team will have team captains who will guide their teams throughout the competitions, handling the nominations.
Some pretty big names among the captains include former players such as Lleyton Hewitt for Australia. He's been handling the men's national team for a long time, so this will hardly be difficult for him.
Some other former players have never been in a situation like this, and for them, it might get a bit more tricky. Notable other player coaches include Petros Tsitsipas for Greece, Edouard Roger-Vasselin for France, and Wesley Koolhof for the Netherlands.
Poland, which will be led by duo Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz,...

Novak Djokovic has set up a training block in Dubai this close season and has invited compatriot and newly-crowned Next Gen Atp Finals champion Hamad Medjedovic.
Djokovic and Medjedovic are the first pair from the same country to win the Atp's flagship year-end championships in the same season. World No. 1 Djokovic triumphed at the Atp Finals in Turin for a record-breaking seventh time in November.
Medjedovic, meanwhile, became the first tennis player to win an Atp-sanctioned tournament in Saudi Arabia by besting Arthur Fils in the final of the Next Gen tournament and taking home $514,000 in prize money for going undefeated during the week.
Djokovic has been a mentor and helper for Medjedovic by extending his generosity through advice and financial aid to assist the youngster's early career phase. Having gone through the same trajectory, Djokovic understands the hurdles that can limit a tennis player from reaching his full potential.

Novak Djokovic always prioritized playing for Serbia even though it only yielded one Davis Cup trophy for the country so far.
Djokovic has always maintained that he prioritizes playing for Serbia any time he can. While his singles career will always probably be ahead for obvious reasons, the Serbian does back up his commitment to the country with numbers.
The win over Cameron Norrie at the 2023 David Cup Finals was his 21nd consecutive win for the country in the Davis Cup, which just shows how domiannt he's been. He's led the country to the trophy once in the past but failed to do that afterwards because the rest of the team often couldn’t support his efforts.
This year it finally seems like he's getting some backing from his teammates so he hopes to lead the country to the trophy. His commitment was praised by Team Captain Viktor Troicki after the win over Norrie.

Novak Djokovic has now officially been confirmed for the Davis Cup Final Eight, even though it was expected for a very long time.
Djokovic promised Team Serbia coach Viktor Troicki that he would be available for this year's Davis Cup Final Eight as the country seeks to win another Davis Cup trophy.
It happened many years ago when Djokovic powered them past France on home soil, which remains one of the greatest memories Djokovic has in tennis.
He's always spoken with a lot of love about his country, and he loves playing for it . You can take the recent example of him opting to help his country in the qualifiers just a few days after winning the US Open.
Playing on short rest there was neither smart nor advisable, but he still opted to do it because they needed him. That's half of the story, really.

Former Atp player Viktor Troicki was present at the US Open to support Serbia's Hamad Medjedovic; however, he was in an argument with a furious fan.
Medjedovic is a rising talent from Serbia whom many consider an heir to Novak Djokovic. He's not the talent that Djokovic is, but even the legend called him a player that will lead Serbian tennis in the future and supports him . As Serbia's Davis Cup Team Captain, Troicki found himself in the stands supporting Medjedovic; however, a fan started to argue with the Serbian.
Video footage shows a fan hurling all sorts of insults towards Troicki, with security personnel intervening to prevent the incident from worsening. Luckily it only ended in exchanged words and nothing more, but the scenes were still shocking to observe as it's very uncommon for tennis.
The whole thing took about 15 minutes to finish, leaving many questioning whether the event...

After not taking part last year, Novak Djokovic is back in the Serbian team for the 2023 Davis Cup Finals later this year.
Djokovic last played for Serbia back in 2021 when the country took part in the Finals, but it wasn't enough as none of his teammates could win a single match. Last year Djokovic skipped over the competition leaving the country vulnerable, and once again, they didn't make it.
This year the hope is for the country to finally go all the way though they will heavily rely on Djokovic to lead them there. It's not like that hasn't been the case in years past, and even so it proved enough for him to lead them to glory before.
The country will have to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition to be played in Malaga in November first, and it's a tough group. Having to play Spain on Spanish soil won't be fun,...

Novak Djokovic always highlighted playing for Serbia as his greatest honour and he'll make a return to the Davis Cup after an absence last year.
Djokovic has played for Serbia regularly, and while he never won a gold medal for the country he did lead them to the trophy in the Davis Cup. He'll try to do that again later this year, as the Serbian now confirmed that he'll be part of the team for the 2023 Davis Cup.
He didn't play last year but that was largely because the country failed to qualify for the final event. This year he'll be part of the team for the qualifiers hoping to help them book a spot in the final showdown at the end of the season.
Yes, I will play this year and I am looking forward to it. Last year, I was really hoping to join the guys for the finals tournament,...

Novak Djokovic has been apparently struggling with an injury but he doesn't like to talk about it a lot.
At the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters, the Serb lost already in the third round to Lorenzo Musetti but fans were interested especially in his physical condition as a compression sleeve on Djokovic's right arm sparked some injury concerns.
After the match, Djokovic avoided addressing the injury but soon it became apparent that he picked it up on Sunday during a practice with Matteo Berrettini. Photos of the painful moment emerged and so it was expected that once Djokovic arrives to Banja Luka, he will be asked about the injury.
“The elbow is not in an ideal condition, but let’s say it’s good enough. I hope it will be fully ready for the first match.”

Melbourne, Feb 9 (Ians) Rafael Nadal on Tuesday started off his chase for a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam in an emphatic manner, registering a straight-sets win against Serbia's Laslo Djere in the opening round contest of the men's singles event of the Australian Open.
The World No. 2 defeated Djere 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 51 minutes to reach the second round where he will play one of two qualifiers -- Michael Mmoh or Viktor Troicki.
"I'm happy to be through to the second round. I think I did a good job today," Nadal said after the match as per the Atp Tour website. "Straight sets, that's what I needed."
Nadal did not compete in the Atp Cup due to injury.
"It's been a tough 15 days for me, because I had some issues with the back. I needed to survive today, and that's what I did," the Spaniard said. "I just...

Melbourne, Feb 5 (Ians) Alexander Zverev bounced back after a tough singles defeat to world number one Novak Djokovic on Friday to help Germany seal their spot in the semi-finals of the Atp Cup for the first time.
Zverev partnered Jan-Lennard Struff to register a 7-6(4), 5-7, 10-7 win in the deciding doubles rubber against Djokovic and Nikola Cacic.
Struff was Germany's hero, having earlier won the No. 2 singles against Dusan Lajovic, before teaming with Zverev to seal the tie for Germany 2-1, knocking out the defending champion.
Germany advances to face Russia, the Group D winner, in Saturday's semi-finals, with the final to be played on Sunday. Team Russia is led by the double threat of Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, who are both ranked inside the Top 10 in the Atp rankings.

The saying “Man makes plans, God laughs” has been around for a long time, even popping up in a truncated form on a Public Enemy album.
That statement may apply to the sports world this week, as it struggles to get back on its feet after a long layoff caused by the pandemic. This week, more obstacles toward that revival emerged, as everything from baseball to tennis to golf to wrestling grappled with coronavirus issues.
While infected personnel are the main concern, there are other problems. Today, the New York Yankees and New York Mets issued a statement saying they will work with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to impose a 14-day quarantine on travelers from virus hotspots like Florida, where both teams normally train. They announced last week that they were shifting spring training to New York City, where cases have slowed.
