‘Loudini’ Short Film: Struggling Magician Tries To Keep His Act Together After Losing His Rabbit

24 August 2016 1:34 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Some creative professions are harder than others, and then there’s magic, which requires a leap of faith as much as genuine talent. Conor and Tyler Byrne’s new comedic short film “Loudini” examines the life of a magician and its unique struggle. Commission by Ray Ban, the film follows a down-on-his luck magician (Henry Zebrowski) who loses his rabbit and struggles to keep his act together. “Loudini” also stars Allyn Rachel (“Million Dollar Arm”), Robert Michael Lee (“The Astronaut Farmer”), and Jakob Verweij in his screen debut. It also features an exclusive musical performance by the band Car Seat Headrest, performing their original song “Does It Feel Good?” Watch the short below.

Watch: 'Loudini' - A Charming Short Film About a Struggling Magician

23 August 2016 6:45 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"Still wearing the cape?" Today's must see short film discovery is titled Loudini, a charming and amusing story about a struggling magician who goes by the nickname "Loudini". Made by the same guys who made the short film Foureyes that we featured a few years ago, Loudini is described (by the filmmakers) as their "mash up of Punch Drunk Love, Inside Llewyn Davis and King of Comedy". That's an eclectic yet appealing pitch that should grab a few of you. The short also has a performance by the musician Car Seat Headrest. This is a great example of a simple idea made grand and engaging by smart filmmaking choices. Have fun. Found on YouTube. Description: "an original short film -- commissioned by Ray Ban -- about a struggling magician, starring Henry Zebrowski (Wolf of Wall Street) and with a musical performance by Car Seat Headrest." It seems 2015/2016 shall be marked as the TV season that saw the resurgence of old shows reborn in mini-series form (or “event series” as the Us networks so desperately want us to call them). Its also the year that these returning shows, The X-Files and Heroes Reborn, did nothing but disappoint the fans who loved the shows and hoped – beyond all hope it turns out – that these new iterations would recapture what made the original series so good.

Heroes Reborn comes from original series creator Tim Kring (Heroes, Touch, Daybreak) and begins a year ago, in Odessa, Texas after a terrorist attack leaves the city decimated. Those with extraordinary abilities are blamed for this tragic event forcing them into hiding »

Dirty Grandpa review: “Repulsive, offensive and terrible”

25 January 2016 2:30 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Dirty Grandpa review: Meet the most offensive, repulsive, most unlikable, disgusting film of the year so far.

Zac Efron and Robert De Niro lead this new R-Rated comedy from Dan Mazar, the talented writer and producer behind Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat movie, and the director of British comedy I Give It A Year. Mazar takes on his biggest project yet with Dirty Grandpa, a film that heavily relies on constant gross-out humour and multiple mutterings of the word shit, rather than wit.

Efron plays Jason, a successful lawyer who has just bagged a high-profile job at the law firm that his father works for. Unfortunately, there’s been a death in the family, and everyone has united to mourn the loss of Jason’s grandmother, including his grandpa, Dick (played by De Niro). At the wake, it becomes known that Dick has to travel to Florida the following day, »

Heroes Reborn episode 13 review: Project Reborn

Heroes Reborn's finale Project Reborn might be the last episode of Heroes altogether. But is it any good?

This review contains spoilers.

1.13 Project Reborn

With Project Reborn marking not only the end of Heroes Reborn but, in all likelihood, the conclusion of Heroes as a television franchise, an unenviable responsibility rests upon Tim Kring and co. to sign off in style. Thankfully, it must be said that this is one hell of a way to go out.

Arguably the strongest episode of this entire 13-part run, Project Reborn is a relentless yet cohesive barrage of lump-in-throat emotion, pulsating action and fist-pumping moments. There are problems, some minor and some very much not minor, but for the most part the Heroes Reborn finale is as entertaining and gripping as could have been expected.

Naturally, this week’s body-count takes a sharp incline and first to bite the dust is Luke, »

‘Heroes Reborn’ Finale Doesn’t Merit Saving the Show (Spoilers)

21 January 2016 7:03 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Amid a wave of nostalgic series revivals, bringing “Heroes” back to life probably made as much sense as any. Not only was the show on recently enough as to still have fans in all the coveted demographics, but its formula created ample opportunities for a reboot. Yet the Jan. 21 finale of “Heroes Reborn” simply reinforced a sense that while the show had its moments — and even ended on a cryptic note, practically begging for another installment — this was a concept that, unlike the cheerleader, just wasn’t worth saving.

Written by series creator Tim Kring and Zach Craley, the finale (and Spoiler Alert if you haven’t watched) did contain some mildly stirring scenes of noble sacrifice, with Zachary Levi’s character, Luke, going all Human Torch, sort of, to try to stave off the encroaching solar flares; and Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman), finally, serving as the conduit for his grandkids (Robbie Kay, »

Can 'The 5th Wave' Take Down 'Ride Along 2' at the Box Office?

19 January 2016 11:50 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last weekend, the mighty Star Wars: The Force Awakens was finally dethroned by Ride Along 2, after four straight weeks of box office. While it certainly seems that its days at the top of the box office heap are over, the film still had the widest release of any movie last weekend, even after shedding more than 300 theaters in its fifth weekend, a trend which will continue into its sixth. Still, even if it posts another minimal decrease this weekend, it won't regain the top spot for the weekend of January 22, with Ride Along 2 most likely set to stay on top, according to projections from Pro.BoxOffice.com.

Ride Along 2 faces three new movies this weekend, Sony's sci-fi action drama The 5th Wave, Lionsgate's R-rated comedy Dirty Grandpa and Stx Entertainment's horror-thriller The Boy, none of which are expected to take down Ride Along 2. After a healthy $35.2 million debut, Ride Along »

Bad Bromance. That’s an interesting title… You might not have heard it till the debut of this movie on DVD. Hang on though. Did anyone go and see The D Train in UK cinemas? I tried. It was screening once a day at a cinema 20 minutes drive away from me and only at 11pm every night. Talk about burying a movie. Maybe that’s why The D Train has been retitled Bad Bromance for its DVD release? Or maybe it’s because this “comedy” is anything but and the the reviews of the cinema release were less than stellar.
