‘Dynasty’: 4 Ways CW’s Reboot Has Updated the Series to Be More Inclusive and Tolerant

2 August 2017 12:55 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Bringing back “Dynasty,” one of the most iconic ‘80s primetime soap operas, nearly 30 years after it went off the air would naturally require some updates. The CW has tackled the challenge head-on in ways that makes the cast far more diverse than in the original.

Executive producer Josh Schwartz (“The O.C.,” “Gossip Girl”) felt that the time was right for a return to the Carrington family. “We are definitely living in an age of dynasties,” he said at the Television Critics Association press tour panel on Wednesday. Pointing to the Trumps, the Clintons, the Kardashians, and the Murdochs, he noted, “That was something that really got us excited to do the show.”

10 Ways CW’s ‘Dynasty’ Reboot Will Be Different From the Original

2 August 2017 12:55 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Dynasty” is coming back to television in the form of a younger, sexier, sassier CW series.

In anticipation of the fall debut, the cast and creators of The CW’s “Dynasty” addressed the press for the first time on Wednesday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills for a well-received panel about the differences and similarities to the original primetime soap opera.

“You see the word ‘Dynasty,’ and you’re like, ‘Oh yes,'” exclaimed star Elizabeth Gillies, who plays Fallon Carrington in the modernized reboot, recalling when the script first landed in her lap.

The cast and executive producers, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of “Gossip Girl” and writer Sallie Patrick, expressed their desire to honor the original characters, while also making them their own. “I wanted to bring my own thing to her. I think she’s feisty as ever,” Gillies said.

How ‘Dynasty’ Reboot Deals With ‘Homophobic’ Elements of Original Series

2 August 2017 11:16 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The Carringtons will have plenty to fight about on the new “Dynasty,” but one topic won’t be a factor. The team from The CW reboot addressed reporters at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour on Wednesday, where one journalist asked about patriarch Blake Carrington’s homophobia in the original version that was launched in 1981. In the new “Dynasty,” Blake’s son, Steven Carrington (James Mackay), is openly gay. “Steven is confidently gay — he’s not toying with his sexuality,” executive producer Josh Schwartz said of the Atlanta-based revival. “He is gay — Blake accepts him. There’s no rancor over that issue. »

Dynasty: What's New (And What's Not) in The CW's Rich and Glitzy Reboot

2 August 2017 10:55 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

The more Dynasty changes, the more it stays the same.

The CW’s reboot of the ’80s primetime soap keeps the glitz and glamour of the original, touting the ridiculously wealthy Carrington family as the “1 percent of the 1 percent” and promising a hair-pulling, bitch-slapping catfight in the very first episode. And right now might actually be the perfect time for a Dynasty revival.

“We are definitely living in the age of dynasties… whether we’re talking about Trumps or Clintons or Kardashians or Murdochs,” executive producer Josh Schwartz (Gossip Girl, The O.C.) told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Wednesday. »

Take Me to the Pilots '17: The CW's 'Dynasty'

Show: Dynasty (The CW)

The Pitch: "Dynasty"

Quick Response: The number of full original Dynasty episodes I've seen could be counted on one hand. I know a few character names and a couple iconic scenes and recurring tropes. I come to The CW's remake as a longtime fan of most things from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, but with few things I demand from the brand. In that light, I wasn't surprised that I enjoyed the show's sly humor, conveyed well through Elizabeth Gillies, James Mackay and Alan Dale, much more than I cared about anything soapy. Grant »
