The latest Warner Animated DC feature film adapts the 2000-2001 Elseworlds miniseries Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham. The fun of the Elseworlds comics, and soon the live-action versions under the new artistic regime, is taking the familiar and imagining them in other times and other places. Here, we do back to the early 20th century and overlay it with a dose of Loftcraftian horror.
Cowritten by Mike Mignola and Richard Pace, two men better known for their artistic skills, this story was designed for visual impact, something Troy Nixey did well in print, and the animators from Jase Ricci’s script and co-directed by Sam Liu and Christopher Berkeley, replicate nicely.
Basically, an arctic expedition headed by Bruce Wayne (David Giuntoli), sent to check on a previous team led by Professor Oswald Cobblepot (William Salyers) reveals horrors and a missing professor. The only surviving is Grendon (David Dastmalchian...

When the cast for the iCarly reboot was announced back in May, many fans were surprised to see that one of the show's original stars, Jennette McCurdy, would not be returning. During a recent Empty Inside podcast conversation with Karan Brar, McCurdy shared that, outside of retiring from acting in 2017, she didn't want to relive traumatic memories tied to the show and its original producer, Dan Schneider. This had many fans wondering how her character's absence would be explained, since Sam was such a big part of the show's original 2007-2012 run. The reboot wasted no time in giving fans an answer during the show's June 17 premiere on Paramount+.
Toward the end of the first episode, Miranda Cosgrove's Carly contemplates starting a new channel on her own after a spectacularly bad date. "I don't need a partner, I need Sam," Carly tells Freddie. "But she's off following her bliss with that biker gang.

Between new storylines with familiar faces - including a Spencer that curses and a Freddie with a stepdaughter - there's a lot to look forward to come June 17 when the iCarly reboot premieres on Paramount+. Unfortunately, Carly's Bff and one of the original characters, Sam, isn't one of them. According to two recent episodes of her podcast Empty Inside, actress Jennette McCurdy, who played Sam, won't be in the reboot. McCurdy has retired from acting and has no interest in returning, least of all the iCarly universe.
In a candid conversation with fellow child actor Karan Brar, McCurdy revealed that iCarly producer Dan Schneider created a "hellish" working environment that damaged her mental health so severely that it made it difficult to come to set. According to McCurdy, not only was he abusive towards the young female actresses, he also had an inappropriate obsession with their feet. McCurdy chose not...

For a significant portion of the The Argument’s running time, there’s a sense of waiting for the other shoe to drop. The set up for the film isn’t particularly strong, and all throughout the first act, it’s hard not to feel like the production is going through the motion. It actually isn’t until the third act that things kick into gear, especially in terms of getting unique and weird. So, as the flick opens today, the question before me is the following: is one really good act enough to warrant a recommendation? It depends on the title in question, but for The Argument, the answer is a low-key yes. The movie is a comedy, focusing on a small group of people and the rather unusual situation they find themselves in. When Jack (Dan Fogler) and Lisa (Emma Bell) disagree in the opening scene, it seems...

"I made a pie!" Gravitas has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Argument, the latest from actor / musician / director Robert Schwartzman. The Argument follows Jack and his girlfriend, Lisa as they get into an argument during a get together with some friends over wine and charcuterie in their apartment after the final night of a play. As the argument escalates, the party comes to an end and all their friends leave — but the party isn't really over. Jack and Lisa recreate the party over and over again — with all their guests — in order to figure out who was right. Dan Fogler and Emma Bell star, with Maggie Q, Danny Pudi, Cleopatra Coleman, Karan Brar, Marielle Scott, Charlotte McKinney, Tyler James Williams, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Mark Ryder. This is a pretty clever concept for a film, recreating a party just to settle an argument, of course it...

For some time it seemed that the darker and more downbeat a young adult film could be, the more ‘serious’ and ‘real’ it believed itself to be. Stargirl often feels like a deliberate reversal of that trend. Co-writer/Director Julia Hart’s adaptation of Jerry Spinelli’s novel is frothy and bright almost from start to finish, but that doesn’t keep it from hitting on some moments of genuine emotion.
Leo (Graham Verchere) moved to Mica, Arizona with his mother (Darby Stanchfield) not long after his father’s death. Wanting to not stand out, Leo blends into the background at high school, until the day Stargirl (Grace VanderWaal) arrives. Stargirl is colourful and quirky, and seems to have an immediate effect on the school, starting with their football team winning their first game ever after she steps up and sings at half time. She re-posted a video of a speech Boyce gave at the Thirst Project’s 9th Annual Thirst Gala in 2018. “It’s crazy. We can tweet whatever we want and we can use social media and Instagram and make the world a better place instead of a worse one, which so many people use it for,” Boyce said in the video-taped speech. “But we need to use our resources and what we have… we’re all in here wearing suits. We need to use what we have to make the world a better place for other people… other people, people who need us!” Boyce was honored with The Pioneering Spirit Award at the Gala. Pacific Rim Uprising is a cut above the standard heavy-metal action blockbuster, with a wealth of visual detail and even an occasional pulse of intelligence beating beneath all of the mayhem. But it’s still a profoundly silly movie, so keep your expectations in check and you’re likely to have a decent time with it.
Pacific Rim Uprising is set a decade after the climax of the first film, when Stacker Pentecost (as played by Idris Elba) had sacrificed himself shutting off that bottom-of-the-sea gateway between Earth and that nasty alien dimension that kept serving up those skyscraper-stomping beasts known as Kaiju. Production on the Kaiju-battling Jaegers, the equally-immense robots controlled by pilots positioned inside their heads, has continued. Our hero for the sequel is Stacker’s son Jake (John Boyega), introduced as a grifter, cheating those looking for weapons and war relics. He’s convinced by his long-lost...
