The prosecutor son of TV's Judge Judy sued the local Putnam County sheriff on Wednesday (Aug. 14) for $5 million for saying that the prosecutor had interfered in a child rape case.
Putnam County District Attorney Adam Levy says county Sheriff Donald Smith is "an out-of-control sheriff who does not care about the truth," the Associated Press reports. He claims Smith "maliciously attempted to destroy" his reputation.
Levy filed his lawsuit in county court in suburban New York, naming Smith as an individual and not a county employee. His lawyer, Michael Sussman, says this means that county tax payers shouldn't be held liable.
The lawsuit stems from a child rape case held against Levy's former personal trainer, Alexandru Hossu. In court papers, Levy called Hossu "a close personal friend" and frequent houseguest of his family's in 2011 and 2012. In March of this year, Levy said he recused himself from the case as soon »
Carmel, N.Y. — A prosecutor who's the son of TV's Judge Judy sued the local sheriff for $5 million on Wednesday for saying the prosecutor had interfered in a child rape case.
Putnam County District Attorney Adam Levy said county Sheriff Donald Smith is "an out-of-control sheriff who does not care about the truth." He said Smith "maliciously attempted to destroy" his reputation.
The sheriff denied defaming Levy. He also said the timing of the lawsuit was "blatantly political" and implied it was intended to damage his re-election campaign.

Of all people, was Judge Judy's son pushing the limits of the law? Putnam County District Attorney Adam Levy, one of famed TV jurist Judith Sheindlin's five children, has been accused by the local sheriff's department of interfering in a child rape investigation because he had a personal connection to the suspect. "The sole focus of this story should be the investigation as to whether a young girl was the victim of a very serious crime. Shifting that focus to celebrity does the justice system a grave disservice," Sheindlin said today in a statement to E! News. Levy maintains that he acted appropriately—by immediately kicking the case to another Da—once he found out that his »
Judge Judy is hoping that justice will prevail in the ongoing war of words between her son, New York's Putnam County District Attorney Adam Levy, and the local sheriff in charge of a recent child rape case. According to Sheriff Donald Smith, Levy has been trying to "influence and affect" the investigation into the alleged rape of a now-15-year-old girl by Levy's personal trainer, Alexandru Hossu. Hossu, 35, was arrested last week after the girl stepped forward and accused the Romania-born trainer of twice raping her back in [...] »

Levy's personal trainer Alexandru Ionut Hossu, who also recently lived with Levy, was arrested last week on charges of rape stemming from a 2010 incident that the victim only recently reported. Although Levy, the Putnam County District Attorney, recused himself from the investigation, Sheriff Donald Smith says he's still involved.

Adam Levy, a district attorney in New York and the son of Judge Judy Sheindlin, is accused of interfering with a rape investigation in Putnam County. Levy's trainer, 35-year-old Alexandru Hossu, is charged with raping a then 12-year-old girl twice in 2010. Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith says Hossu, a Romanian, is in the country illegally with a work visa that expired 12 years ago.
Levy is recused from the investigation into the allegations against Hossu, and tells the Associated Press, "My office acted properly in every aspect of the investigation."
But Sheriff Smith claims it was not Levy who recused himself, but an assistant Da who made the decision. "He is apparently trying to influence and affect the investigation, which could be perceived as an ethical violation of his official duties and perhaps even as an attempt to undermine it," Smith says of Levy.

A suburban district attorney who is the son of TV's "Judge Judy" is being accused of interfering in a child rape case in which the suspect is his personal trainer and recently lived with him.
Putnam County District Attorney Adam Levy has recused himself from the investigation of Alexandru Hossu, but the local sheriff claims Levy is still involved.
"He is apparently trying to influence and affect the investigation, which could be perceived as an ethical violation of his official duties and perhaps even as an attempt to undermine it," Sheriff Donald Smith said.
In a response Monday night, Levy accused the sheriff of making "unfounded allegations and misstatements."
"My office acted properly in every aspect of the investigation," he said.
The question of Levy's involvement in the case has turned into a volley of accusations between the two men, who have clashed publicly before over traffic tickets; Levy also »
