Playing For Keeps DVD Review

20 May 2013 2:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Gabriele Muccino.

Starring: Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dennis Quaid, Judy Greer, Uma Thurman, Iqbal Theba, Noah Lomax.

Running Time: 100 minutes.

Certificate: 12.

Synopsis: Ex-footballer George is trying to sort his life out when he decides to coach his infant son’s soccer team. His ex-wife Stacie is pleased to see him spend time with their kid, but all the soccer moms are pleased to see him for different reasons. Sexy reasons. Can George grow up enough to get his life together? Probably.

Imagine Mrs Doubtfire without the laughs and without the dragging up, then cross it with the Robin Askwith Confessions movies from the 1970s. Add an all-star cast, who really deserve better, and you’ve got Playing For Keeps. A soppy, family-friendly sex comedy that doesn’t quite know what it wants to do and ends up wasting your time.

Safe Haven - Blu-ray Review

16 May 2013 8:54 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

While it manages to be entertaining, Safe Haven follows the Nicholas Sparks' established blueprint too closely and fails to truly make the characters matter. Thankfully, the film is in the very capable hands of director Lasse Hallström and benefits from the likeable chemistry of its leads Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel. It is not a bad movie, but it could have been better given the amount of talent involved. Based on Sparks. novel, the film features a screenplay from Dana Stevens and Gage Lansky, and stars David Lyons, Irene Ziegler, Mimi Kirkland, Noah Lomax, Red West, and Cobie Smulders. Staying as spoiler free as possible due to the twists in the story, the film opens with a »

Film Review: Hey Lovers, ‘Safe Haven’ is a Decent Date Movie

14 February 2013 10:36 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s Valentine’s Day, and along with the impossible to get dinner reservations, the decision of which movie to see has probably spoiled this holiday as much as Walgreen roses. But the romantic drama ‘Safe Haven’ is a well performed, well paced narrative that won’t make you gag, and that includes you wishing-to-see-Die-Hard dudes.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Credit for this probably goes to director Lasse Hallström (“Chocolat,” “Casanova”) who knows a thing about romantic canoodling, and the earnest cast that includes Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel. Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks (“The Notebook”), the story itself has an air of well established mystery, which adds some depth to the characters that make them more interesting. Hallstrom also adds some touches that are unexpected, with a nod toward Hitchcock. Also Hough and Duhamel’s characters are seeking some sort of redemption, which makes a love story more motivated and savory. »

Safe Haven Review

14 February 2013 9:27 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Safe Haven is the umpteenth adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel and the second that has been directed by Lasse Hallström (who previously made Dear John). This one is a little different from the other Sparks stories though in that it is a mystery as well as a romance. But those going into Safe Haven expecting The Notebook redux will come out of it terribly disappointed as it quickly degenerates into a Sleeping With The Enemy rip-off and is undone by a convoluted story, contrived characters and a lot of shameless manipulation on the part of the filmmakers.

The movie starts with Katie Feldman (Julianne Hough from the Footloose remake and Rock Of Ages) frantically trying to catch a bus out of town while being pursued by relentless police detective Kevin Tierney (David Lyons from ER and Revolution). Katie manages to escape his clutches and ends up in the town of Southport, »

Safe Haven (2013) – The Review

14 February 2013 8:14 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Before you head out to the multiplex be sure and pack up the tissues because it’s time for another heart-tugger from the pen (or keyboard) of Nicholas Sparks (whose The Notebook was a huge box office smash). Almost a year ago the screen adaptation of his work The Lucky One hit the cinemas with attractive young actors deciding whether to give love another chance. And now with Safe Haven he presents us with a story of attractive young…you get the drift. If that were the only similarity! So is this the perfect date flick for the most romantic of holidays (too bad there’s not heart-shaped popcorn)?

Haven doesn’t start with images of hearts of flowers. We’re hit with the sight of a young, attractive long-haired brunette (Julianne Hough) barefooted, blood-splattered (not her own), clutching a pillowcase and dashing about a Boston suburb at twilight. A »

Director Lasse Hallstrom discusses his new romantic thriller Safe Haven, in theaters February 14

Director Lasse Hallstr&#246m has had as long and diverse a career as practically any director working in and out of Hollywood today. He has been nominated for three Oscars, two for his work as a writer and director on My Life as a Dog and another for directing The Cider House Rules. He has also directed beloved films such as What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat, and, more recently, the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Dear John and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. The director returns to the world of author Nicholas Sparks for his latest drama Safe Haven, opening in theaters nationwide February 14. I recently had the chance to speak with the filmmaker over the phone about finding such a talented cast (Julianne Hough, Josh Duhamel, Cobie Smulders, David Lyons), shooting in the actual North Carolina town of Southport, »

Exclusive: Nicholas Sparks Talks Safe Haven

Author Nicholas Sparks takes us inside his latest adaptation Safe Haven, arriving in theaters on Valentine's Day

Since 1996, Nicholas Sparks has become a publishing sensation, authoring 16 widely-successful romance novels (and one non-fiction book), eight of which have been adapted into movies, including hits such as A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Dear John, and last year's The Lucky One. The latest of those adaptations is director Lasse Hallstr&#246m's Safe Haven, opening in theaters, fittingly, on Valentine's Day. However, fans looking for another typical Nicholas Sparks-style romance will be in for a bit of a surprise with this hybrid of a tender love story and a gripping thriller.

The story centers on Katie (Julianne Hough), a troubled Boston woman who leaves town in a hurry, catching a southbound bus down the Atlantic coast before the police close in. Katie discovers the sleepy town of Southport, North Carolina, where she »

Actress Julianne Hough discusses her role in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Safe Haven, opening in theaters February 14

Julianne Hough's wide-ranging talents were first put on display as a dancer in shows like Show Me the Money and the ABC reality juggernaut Dancing with the Stars. It wasn't long before the silver screen came calling, as she landed roles in music-themed projects Burlesque, Footloose, and Rock of Ages. Julianne Hough's new drama Safe Haven gives fans both a glimpse at her dramatic acting chops, and a Nicholas Sparks adaptation that isn't just a straight-up romance.

The actress portrays Katie, a troubled young woman who flees from Boston to start fresh in a peaceful North Carolina town. When she finally starts to let her guard down, and gets closer with a local shopkeeper (Josh Duhamel), her dangerous past comes back to haunt her. I recently had the chance to speak »

Playing For Keeps Review

4 January 2013 3:13 PM, PST | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Gerard Butler's filmography is a strange one. Action movies and thrillers like 300, Law Abiding Citizen, and Gamer sit oddly alongside romantic comedy such as P.S. I Love You, The Bounty Hunter, and The Ugly Truth. Personally, I think he is strong leading man, with a great presence, but I prefer him him when he firing off guns with abandon, or shouting the name of the place he's currently in. Which makes the fact that I really enjoyed Playing For Keeps, his latest journey down the romantic comedy route, all the more puzzling. Butler plays George Dryer, a former professional football (soccer, for those of you in America) player who has fallen on hard times. Unemployed, trying to have a meaningful relationship with his son (Noah Lomax), and dealing with the fact that his ex-wife (Jessica Biel) is getting remarried, his life takes a turn for the better when he »
