Paris, May 29 (Ians) Former Champion Novak Djokovic started his campaign to capture a record 23rd Grand Slam title and the World No.1 ranking with a comprehensive win in the men’s singles first round at the French Open here on Monday.
Two-time French Open champion Djokovic, who also has a chance of becoming the first man in the history of Open Era tennis to achieve the triple career Grand Slam, dispatched Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(1) in the first round on Court Philippe Chatrier at the Roland Garros here.
However, things were quite difficult for Canadian Denis Shapovalov and British star Cameron Norrie as they were both taken the distance before emerging unscathed from the first round.
Italian world No.130 Fabio Fognini knocked out No.10 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the second round for the 12th time in his career.

Rome, May 11 (Ians) Italian Fabio Fognini caused a big upset at home, earning his biggest win of the season when he defeated Scot Andy Murray at the Internazionali d’Italia.
Fognini, a former Top 10 player, has been going through a struggle in 2023 and had arrived at the Foro Italico with a 2-8 tour-level record. However, the Italian wild card thrilled the Rome crowd with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory to reach the second round after two hours and 54 minutes on Wednesday evening.
“For sure I’m happy because coming back from injury is never easy, especially at our age. But winning here in Rome against a really big player like Andy, I mean I’m happy,” Fognini said in his on-court interview.
“Now it’s important to recover and let’s see how I recover and I wake up tomorrow because it’s going to be tricky and a nice...

Rio de Janeiro, Feb 24 (Ians) Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain survived a two-hour and 47-minute battle against Italy’s Fabio Fognini to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Atp 500 Rio Open, here.
In a rematch of their 2022 Rio de Janeiro semifinal, Alcaraz earned an entertaining 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 victory, improving to 6-0 on the season on Thursday night.
“It’s always a challenge to play Fabio. He’s such a talented player and we never know what he’s going to do. It was a match with highs and lows. I started pretty well but I missed some opportunities and when you’re playing against someone like him you can’t afford to do that. It was a long and tough match and I think that in the end I was a bit better physically,” Alcaraz was quoted as saying by the tournament’s website.
The world no.

Stockholm (Sweden), Oct 23 (Ians) Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer on Sunday captured the men’s doubles title at the Stockholm Open after beating third seeds Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara 6-3, 6-3 in the final, here.

Paris, May 31 (Ians) Spaniard Pablo Andujar made a remarkable recovery from being two sets down, for the first time in his career, to beat a top-5 player when he shocked fourth seed Austrian Dominic Thiem 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the first-round of French Open on Sunday.
World No. 68 Andujar took full advantage of Thiem's lapses in concentration on way to upsetting the 2018 and 2019 finalist in over four hours and 28 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Andujar, who beat Roger Federer at the Gonet Geneva Open two weeks ago, now has a 6-23 career record against top 10 opponents.
Andujar will now play either Moldovan Radu Albot or Federico Delbonis of Argentina.
World No. 4 Thiem, who finished as runner-up to Rafael Nadal in the 2018 and 2019 finals, is now 9-8 this season. This was his first opening-round loss at Roland Garros in eight appearances.

Paris, May 30 (Ians) British No.1 Dan Evans's search for a maiden French Open title will continue after he went down to 21-year-old Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the championship on Sunday.
This was the 27th ranked player's fourth time in Roland Garros main draw and he is yet to make it through to round two.
In other first-round matches, No.29 Italian Fabio Fognini got the better of France's 122nd ranked Gregorie Barrere 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 while 11th ranked Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut defeated compatriot Mario Martinez 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
Clay has always been Evans's weakest surface. But expectations were raised by his success on clay this season, including a stunning victory over world No.1 Novak Djokovic on his way to the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Melbourne, Feb 17 (Ians) World No.2 Rafael Nadal on Wednesday fell to fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in a five-set thriller that stretched to over four hours. Tsitsipas fought back from two sets down to beat Nadal 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 7-5 at the Rod Laver Arena.
This was the seventh time that Tsitsipas faced Nadal. He had beaten the 20-time Grand Slam champion only once before Wednesday.
Tsitsipas now faces Russian world No.4 Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals, who beat compatriot Andrey Rublev earlier in the day. Unlike Tsitsipas, Medvedev had a much more straightforward path against seventh seed Rublev, who was struggling with the humid conditions.
This is only the third time in his career that Nadal has lost a match after going two sets up to love. The last man to beat Nadal in this manner was Italy's Fabio Fognini at the 2015 US Open.

Melbourne, Feb 15 (Ians) World number two Rafael Nadal on Monday entered the Australian Open quarter-finals for the 13th time after getting past Fabio Fognini in their fourth round contest.
Nadal, the 2009 champion, registered a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over the Italian No. 16 seed in two hours and 16 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena.
"When you go on court against Fabio, you worry," said Nadal after the match as per the Atp Tour website.
"There can always be problems. I was just lucky that when he broke me (in the second set) I responded immediately and held the score. Today was very humid and quicker during the day, which I like, but I have to adapt to every condition," he added.
The 34-year-old is looking to become the first man in the Open Era to clinch each of the four major championships on two or more occasions.
