'Breaking Bad,' 'House of Cards' scribes earn Writer's Guild noms

Writers for Breaking Bad and House of Cards were among those singled out for the 2014 Writers Guild Awards, which will be held on Feb. 1 in Los Angeles and New York.

Animated Comedy From Ed Helms & Graham Wagner Gets NBC Presentation Order

Exclusive: NBC is renewing its efforts to bring animation back to its comedy lineup. The network has given a presentation order to Mystery Island, an animated comedy voiced and co-written by The Office alum Ed Helms. Helms has teamed on the project with former Office writer-producer Graham Wagner. The duo, who met on the long-running NBC workplace comedy, are co-writing Mystery Island — set on an island where holidaymakers get marooned after their cruise ship malfunctions — for Universal TV where Helms’ newly launched company Pacific Electric Picture Co. has a first-look deal. The two executive produce with Pacific Electric Picture Evp Michael Falbo. This marks the second sale for both Wagner and Pacific Electric Picture. According to Deadline, Ed Helms (The Office, The Hangover) is producing a new comedy for NBC. The show will be written by Aisha Muharrar, who is a producer and former writer for Parks and Recreation, and will center around a teenager who wants to be the next Oprah. She’s socially awkward, though, so she tries to solve the problems of her friends and family Oprah-style to help get her ready for the big time. »

Ed Helms, star of NBC’s biggest comedy series of the past five years, The Office, is producing a new comedy project for the network written by Aisha Muharrar. Meanwhile, Fox has bought a comedy produced by one of the stars of its current flagship comedy series, New Girl‘s Jake Johnson. It is written by Matt Spicer. The Aisha Muharrar NBC project centers on a gifted teen who aspires to be the next Oprah, but lacks the social skills and life experience, so she uses her family and friends as the reluctant case studies in her mission to solve everyone’s problems, including her own. Let’s talk for a second about Abed Nadir. In a lot of ways, he seems emblematic of the problems that have hamstrung Community’s fourth season. As soon as he arrives at Jeff’s Christmas party, he is actively trying to mold it into a Die Hard homage. This isn’t unprecedented behavior for Abed, he shaped what is perhaps the series’ best episode “Critical Film Studies” into a My Dinner With Andrew homage, but recently it seems to be his sole motivating concern week in and week out. It feels like a shift in his character. If we take a look at “Cooperative Calligraphy,” an episode “Intro to Knots” closely resembles. Abed constantly comments “It’s a bottle episode!” but he is not attempting to propagate it. »

Argo and Zero Dark Thirty honoured at the 2013 WGA Awards

Ben Affleck's acclaimed CIA thriller Argo picked up another award last night as screenwriter Chris Terrio was honoured by the Writer's Guild of America at this year's WGA Awards with Best Adapted Screenplay, while Mark Boal received Best Original Screenplay for Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty and Malik Bendejelloul collected Best Documentary Screenplay for Searching for Sugar Man.

Shifting to the small screen and there was awards success for Breaking Bad (Best Drama Series), Louie (Best Comedy Series) and Girls (Best New Series), along with Mad Men (Episodic Drama), Modern Family (Episodic Comedy), Hatfields & McCoys (Long Form - Original), Game Change (Long Form - Adapted) and The Simpsons (Animation).
