The last time we saw up-and-coming filmmaker Dennis Iliadis behind the camera was for the rather good (minus that whole microwave ending thing) 2009 remake of Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left.
Now Iliadis has returned into the genre fold with his ambitious and darkly comedic teen horror/sci-fi project Plus One, which celebrated its worldwide premiere a few weeks ago during the 2013 SXSW Film Festival.
It was in Austin where Dread Central chatted exclusively with Iliadis about his latest project, how American teen comedies from the 1980's inspired his horror/sci-fi mash-up and how the long development process on the remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (which was announced over four years ago) inspired him to venture out and make Plus One on his own terms.
Dread Central: Because the story is so ambitious and there are a lot of things happening, can you break down Plus One »

Even if you have the ideal SXSW experience, there’s always that one you wished you would have made time to catch and for me, that was Dennis Iliadis’ “Plus One” and that guilt was only intensified after hearing the ultimate pitch from Iliadis and his cast. Ashley Hinshaw, Rhys Wakefield and Logan Miller lead as a trio of college friends gearing up for the ultimate party. That same evening a small meteor hits and while it doesn’t cause much damage, the impact conjures a supernatural phenomenon that leaves everyone with a duplicate of themselves. Whereas you start with the familiar college kids looking for a good time scenario, “Plus One” [ Read More ]

It’s rare to exit a film utterly flabbergasted by the incompetence it displays on almost every level, and that’s especially the case when the filmmaker has proven themselves more than capable in the past. Dennis Iliadis directed the Last House on the Left remake a few years back, and goofy microwave denouement aside, it’s a surprisingly effective film. Regardless where you fall on the overall quality side of it though there’s little argument against it being a well shot and strongly told movie. Which is why it’s a palpably disappointing surprise to see his latest film, Plus One, exhibit a lack of skill almost across the board. David (Rhys Wakefield) is a bit of a dick. He makes a special trip to visit his girlfriend Jill (Ashley Hinshaw) on her turf, but while that alone is an act of affection he then proceeds to let another girl kiss him unaware that Jill »

A high-level sci-fi concept, a raucous college party, and a desperate attempt at romantic reconciliation mix uneasily in Dennis Iliadis' Plus One, a movie whose worthy ambitions largely outstrip its execution. Disguising the first act of the movie as a straightforward young-adult love story is a winsome idea. In practice, though, the resemblance in structure and characters to dozens of other similar tales does nothing to build anticipation for the inevitable twists, and the film struggles to maintain momentum. In short, we can't hardly wait for the sci-fi concept to take hold. When it does, however, the second act of the movie is then spent explaining and slowly exploring that; it's only in the third act that everything finally ramps up. Ashley Hinshaw and Natalie...

Less than a week ago we brought you the complete list of Narrative Features that will be spotlighted at this year's 2013 SXSW Film Festival taking place in Austin, TX from March 8-16. Today, SXSW made the additional announcement that many, including myself, have been waiting for; The Midnighters.
One of my favorite parts of the SXSW Film Festival is the Midnight Movies. The SXSW compiles the latest in Horror, Cult, and the absolutely insane and shows a different one each night at the South Lamar Drafthouse. Getting to watch these types of films late at night surrounded by fellow genre fans in one of the finest theatrical settings the Earth has ever known is literally every bit as awesome as it sounds.
Of the 9 announced Midnight feature films, the one I am most excited about is Rob Zombie's Lords of Salem. SXSW will be the movie's Us premiere, a »

The feature film slate for Austin's South by Southwest festival (SXSW) was revealed last week, but as most genre fans know, the real cinematic treasures are lurking in the festival's midnight lineup. As SXSW Programmer Jarod Neece put it: "This year we scoured the globe and brought back a batch that we knew would truly satisfy the gore hounds of SXSW. Full of scares, sex, madness, laughs, chills and major mind f--ks, we hope there's a little something for everyone."
Browsing the titles, it's hard to tear our eyes away from a film called "Big Ass Spider" (directed by Mike Mendez of "The Gravedancers"), but the addition of Rob Zombie's "Lords of Salem," sequel "V/H/S/2," a movie from "Splice"'s Vincenzo Natali ("Haunter"), and vampire tale "Kiss of the Damned" from Xan Cassavetes certainly helps.
Earlier this week, a full trailer was released for Zombie's witchy opus, »
