‘Anonymous’: Film Review
Uninvolving from start to finish, the would-be thriller Anonymous traffics in a certain bland slickness, placing it squarely in the international crime subset of generic action features. Kazakh director Akan Satayev’s first English-language feature is technically proficient but devoid of a beating heart. As it juggles half-formed and feebly dramatized notions of the dark web, black markets, cybercrime and hacktivism, the success or failure of the hoaxes enacted by its young hackers and thieves matters not a whit.

Xyz Films wade into River

Exclusive: Xyz Films has picked up North American sales rights to the thriller from debut writer-director Jamie M Dagg.

The story centres on a traumatised American volunteer doctor on leave in Laos who flees into the interior after he intervenes to help the victim of a sexual assault and kills the assailant.

Casting is underway on River, which is scheduled to commence principal photography in Laos and Thailand in January.

Nick Sorbara of Reach Me and Pontypool fame is producing via his RedLab Digital and Sanzhar Sultanov co-produces through his company Know Rules Media. Brillstein Entertainment’s Jai Khanna serves as executive producer.

The shoot will mark the first for a North American film in Laos and is scheduled for delivery in September. The producers are working with Laotian authorities to lobby for production incentives and the local producer partner is Mattie Do of Lao Art Media.

Electric to crack market with Hacker
Exclusive: Dean Devlin’s Electric Entertainment has secured all worldwide rights to the international thriller and started talks with Afm buyers.

Akan Satayev directed the film from Sanzhar Sultanov and Timur Zhaksylykov’s screenplay about three young coders who fall foul of the authorities and the shadowy operators behind their criminal paymasters.

Hacker shot in New York, Hong Kong, Toronto and Bangkok and stars Callan McAuliffe, Lorraine Nicholson, Daniel Eric Gold and Clifton Collins Jr.

Sultanov’s production company Know Rules Media produced with Satayev’s SataiFilm. Loudon Owen and Jai Khanna from Brillstein Entertainment Partners are the executive producers.

“We were immediately intrigued by Hacker because it is very topical and timely,” said Electric’s head of international distribution Sonia Mehandjiyska. “It deals with a scary situation that could unfortunately become a reality for all of us one day.”

‘Great Gatsby’ Actor Callan McAullife Logs On to Indie ‘Hacker’ (Exclusive)
Australian actor Callan McAuliffe, who played the young Jay Gatsby in “The Great Gatsby,” will star in indie film “Hacker.”

Sanzhar Sultanov is producing “Hacker” and Akan Satayev is directing. Shooting is set to begin on Nov. 28 in Toronto, Dubai, Thailand and New York.

McAuliffe will play an intelligent and amoral computer genius who joins an underground network of computer-based criminals known as DarkWeb in an effort to uncover the identity of the org’s master hacker.

McAuliffe will soon be seen in the remake of the Japanese anime “Kite” alongside Samuel Jackson, and in the U.K. sci-fier “Our Robot Overlords” with Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson.

He is repped by CAA, Rgm, and Felker, Toczek, Gellman and Suddelson.

Callan McAuliffe, Lorraine Nicholson board Hackers

Callan McAuliffe is set to star in Hackers alongside Lorraine Nicholson, reports Deadline. The indie film is being directed by Akan Satayev where McAuliffe will play Alex Danyliuk, an ambitious teen member of DarkWeb, a secret Internet criminal network. Nicholson will play Kira Whittal, also in DarkWeb. Satayev also wrote the story alongside Timur Zhaxylykov, which Sanzhar Sultanov scripted. Producing are Knows Rules Media while Brillstein Entertainment Partners are executive producing the film which has a $5 million budget, and starts shooting in Toronto at the end of November.

The Toronto-lensed feature "Burning Daylight", directed by Sanzhar Sultanov, is based on two short stories and one novel by author Jack London.

The 3-part anthology is set against the backdrop of 1920’s New York:

"...Part I depicts the lives of two low-life thieves enjoying a post-heist euphoria while developing a subtle rivalry. Part II is an intricate dance between a manipulative, wealthy woman and a seemingly inane, destitute thief.
