The sick and twisted minds behind the Melbourne Underground Film Festival have launched a brand new horror and sci-fi themed fest: Bloodfest Fantastique! Australia gets a lot more blood-soaked on June 10-18, nine nights of some of the most gruesome, terrifying and far-out films, past and present, from around the world.
While Muff has never been shy about screening genre films, Richard Wolstencroft — founder and director of both fests — is planning for his newest endeavor to simply be a celebration of his two favorite genres of filmmaking, without all the politicking hooha-ery that surrounds Muff.
So, there’s still a very underground-esque flavor to Bloodfest. The newer flicks in the festival have a scrappy, inventive, degenerate quality, from slice and dice em’s like Chris Sun’s Come and Get Me, Chad Ferrin’s Someone’s Knocking at the Door and Geoff Klein Bikini Girls on Ice; to monster flicks »

Rating: 7.5 out of 10
Having worked behind the scenes of some very big movies including G.I. Joe, Inglorious Basterds and Hereafter, Mathieu Turi is no stranger to the film world. Sons of Chaos though is the French director's first foray into directing and after watching it it's clear that the man is one to watch out for. Running at 14 minutes, the story of a young warrior sent into the post-apocalyptic wilderness to accomplish three dangerous tasks is effective in its simplicity and does exaclty what a short should: Showcase the filmmakers talents. In this case those talents include stellar production design, visual FX integration a knack for staging real pulse-pounding tension.
The story takes place in a devastated future, but you can tell Turi is really telling an old samurai tale here. The kind of story »
Written and directed by Mathieu Turi and shot on the REDone Camera System, Sons of Chaos is a lush looking, pulse pounding post-apocalyptic short that tranforms the south of France into terrifying terrain where a young warrior must travel alone and face three tests to become a man. I like the mythic sounds of this one, and the trailer Turi passed along to us has a great score and tone that hints at some serious tension.
2154. To become a son of chaos, and protect the people, Oca, a young warrior, has to succeed three tests. Ouranos, his master, can't help him. Oca has to find a building in the forest, then reach the roof, without a weapon, and finally, kill a Howler, a dangerous and horrible creature.
We're going to try and coax the full thing from Turi, but for now check out the film's trailer after the break. »
