The annual film event in Laos that was for the past 12 years known as the Luang Prabang Film Festival has given up its name in order to go ahead with next month’s edition.
“Organizers have recently acquiesced to a name change in order to continue to produce this year’s event, scheduled for Dec. 8- 11, and will move forward using only the iconic blue chair to identify the festival,” they said in a statement that also unveiled the festival’s film selection.
Contacted by Variety, organizers had no additional comment beyond their published statement.
The festival has been operated on a non-profit basis with the backing of private sector and local government sponsors in the Unesco Heritage town of Luang Prabang. It has supported the Laos local film industry, operated talent development workshops and provided free-of-charge screenings of recent Southeast Asian films to the Laos public.

Compared with other members of the below-the-line community affected by the coronavirus pandemic and the production shutdowns it spurred, post-production artists are uniquely positioned. Relying mostly on computers and an Internet connection to do their jobs, picture editors, sound editors and colorists are able to work remotely, while many other artisans are not.
Still, this reality is tempered by the fact that without new material to edit, their work, too, will dry out.
Tom Jarvis, the Emmy-nominated editor behind The Late Late Show with James Corden, has spoken with a number of his fellow craftsmen in recent days, gaining a sense of how the shutdowns have impacted them.

With 97 Emmys set to be given out over the two-night Creative Arts ceremony, it can be easy to forget that the silos the Television Academy creates for awards purposes belie the need for crafts departments to collaborate as much as possible to create a successful show.
Ask even casually, and artisans at just about every stage of production will stop to acknowledge their crew, co-workers and the departments whose work intertwines with their own. For double Emmy-nommed sound editor Mandell Winter, the producers, director and film editor are his closest collaborators. He works with them to get a careful understanding of what sounds are needed for a project. He also talks with other sound editors to ensure whatever they need makes it to the mixing stage and is part of the overall editorial process, making adjustments as needed.
