If I Stay

4 September 2014 12:05 PM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

If Wetlands looks at teen life without blinkers, If I Stay prefers Hollywood-style, rose-colored glasses. Guess which one finds box-office gold? Based on Gayle Forman’s 2009 Ya bestseller, If I Stay has the virtue of starring Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, Let Me In, Hugo), 17, a skilled actress who can make me believe anything. But not this, Chloe, not this. Moretz plays Mia Hall, an Oregon high schooler with a gift for cello, a rocker boyfriend (Jamie Blackley), indulgent parents (Mireille Enos and Joshua Leonard), and an itch to get into Julliard. »

If I Stay Review

Based on the Young Adult novel of the same name by Gayle Forman, If I Stay take the tried and trusted afterlife formula and gives it a very teen centric spin. If I Stay isn't just the title, but also what Mia Hall (Chloe Grace Moretz), a musically gifted teenager, is asking herself after she and her family are in a horrific car accident. Tethering on the edge of the land of the living, Mia guides us through the major events of her young life, mainly her failed relationship with rock star on the rise Adam (Jamie Blackley), as she must decide if she wants her life to go on. While aimed at the teenage audience that makes up the novels readership, If I Stay is refreshingly free of all the trappings that come with most Ya adaptions. The audience is never talked down to, and the characters feel fully formed and realised, »

If I Stay movie review: you see me, you really see me

Honest, emotional teen melodrama with a great performance by Chloë Grace Moretz that serves as a beautiful metaphor for the choices that teen girls face. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

High school student and brilliant student cellist Mia Hall (Chloë Grace Moretz [Carrie, Kick-Ass 2], who is terrific, as always, here) is in a coma. Dying, even. She and her family have been in a horrific car crash, and now, as her body lies in a hospital bed, her spirit wanders the hospital, visiting her family when she can (she needs to wait for someone corporeal to open doors, as you do when you’re a ghost) and thinking back over her life, and whether it’s worth returning to.

If adapting more young-adult novels means getting more stories about teenaged girls onscreen, »

If I Stay

Written for the screen by Shauna Cross

Directed by R.J. Cutler

USA, 2014

Based on the novel of the same name by Gayle Forman, If I Stay tells the story of Mia Hall (Chloë Grace Moretz). An overachiever, cello enthusiast, and overall good-egg of a daughter, Mia has paved a finite future for herself with Julliard on her horizon. When involved in a head on collision, killing her entire family and leaving her in a coma, she goes through an out-of-body experience and has to decide if she will stay with her rocker boyfriend (Jamie Blackley) and live with her grandparents, or depart with her family and leave everything she’s aspiring to behind. What seems like the same tiresome supernatural melodrama found in Ya franchises like Twilight, in actuality, holds up nicely for both the tween dragging their parent and the parent initially being dragged into the theater. »

If I Stay review: Chloë Grace Moretz can't decide to stay or go

29 August 2014 1:01 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Director: Rj Cutler; Screenwriter: Shauna Cross; Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Mireille Enos, Jamie Blackley, Joshua Leonard, Stacy Keach, Liana Liberatro; Running time: 107 mins; Certificate: 12A

What would you choose: heaven, or heaven on earth? The big decision Mia Hall is faced with during an out-of-body experience is almost academic. Chloë Grace Moretz has an effortless look of anguish that makes this sluggish adaptation of Gayle Forman's best-selling novel a little more watchable than it deserves to be, but with a picture of teenage life seemingly plucked from the pages of Mizz, it really makes little difference whether Mia stays on this mortal coil, or goes.

Forman started out writing for teen magazines and that experience translates into a very glossy picture of youth. Apart from her model looks, Mia is a musical prodigy with achingly hip, easy-going parents (Mireille Enos of The Killing remake plays mum) and a devoted »

If I Stay review

Chloe Moretz stars in the emotionally-fraught adaptation of If I Stay. It's a film of two halves, Caroline writes...

Any young adult movie that arrives in cinemas with the phrase “based on the bestselling novel” pasted on the poster below the image of a young starlet is going to be greeted with a certain level of suspicion. What is it this time? Vampires? Werewolves? Zombies? If I Stay might separate itself from its peers by not actually being set in a fantasy world (as such), but the genre’s preoccupation with tragedy and death still engulfs the film.

Chloe Moretz, who’s a perplexing choice for the film from the start, plays teen cello progeny Mia, who is forced to choose between life and death when her family get into an horrific car accident. Her excursions in limbo/the hallways of the hospital she and her family were brought to »

If I Stay Review

When the talented young actress Chloë Grace Moretz burst onto the scene, truly coming to prominence with her performance as Hit-Girl in the 2010 superhero flick Kick-Ass, she was a breath of fresh air. She may have looked like a sweet, innocent young girl – but subverted the stereotype with an invigorating, energetic, and somewhat unrefined turn, signalling the start of what has since been a flourishing career, which has seen her collaborate with Martin Scorsese in Hugo, and turn to her dark side in the Carrie remake. However her latest endeavour, R.J. Cutler’s If I Stay, is a dramatic step backwards, as she plays the cliched, ‘misunderstood’ teenager with about as much depth as a paddling pool. A character that is everything we had hoped she would never become.

Moretz plays Mia Hall, an introverted high school student, who prefers to play her cello and listen to Beethoven, than go »

British actor Jamie Blackley is riding high at the Us box office thanks to the success of If I Stay, an adaptation of a best-selling Young Adult novel that sees him star alongside Chloë Grace Moretz. The film easily outperformed Sin City Stateside and is the latest offering from the Ya stable, a genre that's fast becoming a go-to for Hollywood producers.

"I just think it's cool that young people are reading now," Blackley told Digital Spy. "I don't remember anyone when I was at school sitting down and fanning out over books. It never, ever happened. If I Stay tackles other issues, it's not set in a post-apocalyptic world - it's really interesting how people have taken to it."

Box office: 'If I Stay' beats a strong 'Guardians' on Friday with $6.8 million

23 August 2014 10:09 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The drama "If I Stay" took the top spot at the box office, but it may not stay there for long, as Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" is enjoying a strong resurgence. Meanwhile, Frank Miller's "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" is D.O.A.  "Stay," which stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Jamie Blackley and Mireille Enos, picked up $6.8 million on Friday, easily topping "Guardians" which picked up another $4.8 million in its fourth weekend. However, it looks likely that "Guardians" will pull ahead of "Stay" by Sunday. "Stay" is expected to earn a slightly disappointing $16.8 million, while "Guardians" could rack up slightly more.  The Marvel film -- starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Coooper -- is poised to become the biggest domestic hit of the summer. Having already earned $239 million, it will have no trouble crossing the $250 million mark by Sunday. "Transformers: Age of Extinction »

‘If I Stay’ Review

22 August 2014 9:41 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

If I Stay‘s blend of teen romance and supernatural melodrama doesn’t break the Ya mold, but it’s a decent addition to the genre nonetheless.

In the film If I Stay, we find teenager Mia Hall (Chloë Grace Moretz) at a crossroads – having to choose between pursuing her dream of becoming a professional cellist or traveling a different road with her musician boyfriend Adam (Jamie Blackley). However, everything changes in an instant one day when Mia and her family get in a terrible car accident that leaves Mia in a coma, teetering on the edge between life and death.

Mia then finds herself having an out-of-body experience, which allows her to watch her family, friends, and loved ones gather around her comatose body at the hospital. As this happens, Mia ...

‘If I Stay’ Review: What Happens When a Self-Absorbed Twat Makes a Meaningless Decision?

Mia (Chloe Grace Moretz) is an outcast in her own family. We know this because she tells us via narration, but also because while her parents and younger brother like rock music her preferred jams are of the classical variety. It’s enough to make you think she was switched at the hospital after birth isn’t it? She’s seventeen and in love with Adam (Jamie Blackley), the lead singer of a local band that will change your life — they’re opening for The Shins! — and she’s eagerly awaiting a letter letting her know whether or not she’s been accepted into Juilliard. An impromptu snow day sends the family on a road trip and into the front grill of a truck leaving her parents dead, her brother injured and Mia standing over her own comatose body. She quickly discovers that the decision to live or die is hers to make. We »

Film Review: ‘If I Stay’ Can’t Rinse its Too-Sudsy Soap Opera

22 August 2014 6:58 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – We hate it when they grow up. Chloë Grace Moretz, a former child actor, takes on a first-teen-love role, and the results are decidedly mixed. The extreme emotions, the circumstances and Ms. Moretz’s performance undermine the soapy “If I Stay.”

Rating: 2.5/5.0

The film is told in episodic flashback, after a car accident renders the character of Moretz as a ghost-like presence over her own coma recovery. Based on a popular young adult novel, the plot is straight out of a soap opera, and the squishy narrative doesn’t help matters. The film seeks to be different, by having the main character’s parents as former rock and rollers, and it sprinkles in a few swear words, but overall the tart points can’t affect the glacial pacing – this film moved so slow it almost reversed time – and the dull approach that Moretz applies to her character felt as »
