- She became a civil rights activist when she was a teenager growing up in Mississippi. She and her sister Joyce joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which came to have a major role in the civil rights movement, while they were students at Tougaloo College, a historically Black school in Jackson, Mississippi. She led marches and sit-ins, organized voter registration drives, and helped with events including the 1963 March on Washington.
