Film Review: ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’ Too Thin to be Completely Winning

24 July 2016 3:42 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Chicago – As far as TV shows that fans wish could be movies, the cult hit “Absolutely Fabulous” was high on the list. The adventures of Patsy and Edina, two middle age Brits with an appetite for self medication, has had a dedicated following since it premiered in 1992. Even though there were six full TV seasons, and various reunions, “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” has emerged.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Although series creator (and portrayer of Edina) Jennifer Saunders wrote the screenplay, the film suffered with a not-quite-enough storyline that made 90 minutes seem longer. However, there are some magic and bizarrely funny moments in the film, even though the substance-abusing duo are getting a bit long in the tooth to keep the characters viable. But this is “Ab-Fab,” and viability is not really high on the radar, darling. For fans of the show, this is welcome fun, and for those not as familiar, caveat emptor. »

Watch: Chris Colfer Sings His Way Onto ‘Glee’

18 March 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | | See recent Backstage news »

Although the audition tape below is short, it serves as a reminder that in an audition, individuality trumps all.  When Chris Colfer auditioned for Fox’s musical series “Glee,” show creator Ryan Murphy was impressed enough to write up a character all his own. Colfer had come in for the part of Artie, a role that eventually went to Kevin McHale, but after reading with the showrunners and singing “Mr. Cellophane” from the musical “Chicago,” Murphy knew he had to do something to capitalize on the actor’s distinct charm. In addition to showing off his astonishing countertenor voice—Colfer hit a high G later in the series’ run—the video below captures something quintessential to “Glee” as a comedy about embracing your quirks and talent. Kurt, Murphy’s creation for Colfer, would go on to be a fan favorite during “Glee’s” six seasons, as well as one of »

Forget that Civil War between our favorite Avengers and the mayhem of the Suicide Squad, this summer's biggest superheros are coming armed in Lacroix and vodka. You know who I'm talking about, don't you, sweetie? Eh, darling?

Behold the briefest of glimpses for cult adaptation Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie! While we may not get much more than a hint of the French Riviera-set plot, it's clear that Edina and Patsy are still up their old tricks of boozing and flirting.

Obviously, there isn't enough yet to give this the full Ynms treatment, but a cigarette-drenched summer fling with Eddi and Pats will be welcome against noisier competition. We'll be treated to the original series cast - aren't you just thrilled to see Jane Horrocks and Julia Sawalha in anything? - and Jennifer Saunders has long been promising big laughs with her script. For now, we'll forget about the promised cameos »
