The Best Cast Films of 2017, According to Top Casting Directors
Casting directors remain the only job in the opening titles that doesn’t have its own Oscar category, but there’s reason to believe that will change. Already recognized by the Emmys, casting directors have made tremendous strides since they unionized in 2005 and negotiated their first contract with studios. In 2013, the guild earned its own Academy branch and received three seats at the Academy’s Board of Governors’ table. Last year, Lynn Stalmaster (“The Graduate,” “West Side Story”) received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards, becoming the first-ever casting director to receive an Academy Award.

Lupita Nyong’o, Jessie Mueller Join Lilly Awards Lineup

What do Tony-winning “Waitress” star Jessie Mueller and Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o have in common with feminist icon Gloria Steinem? They’ll all be on hand at the Signature Theatre May 23 for the 7th Annual Lilly Awards! Held each year to celebrate women in theater, reps for the Lilly Awards announced May 16 that they’ve added Mueller, Kathy Najimy, Genne Murphy, Candis Jones, Rehana Lew Mirza, and the creatives behind Irish activist group “Waking the Feminists” to their 2016 honorees. The list already included heavy-hitting theater-makers such as Danai Gurira, Martha Plimpton, Kate Whoriskey, and Mia Katigbak. Steinem, Nyong’o, and the rest of the “Eclipsed” women will be presenting the awards along with Lloyd Suh, Russell G. Jones, Rachel Chavkin, and Neena Beeber. The Angel Band Project (the Norbert Leo Butz–founded organization that provides music therapy for survivors of sexual and domestic violence) will also receive special recognition that evening.

The film is based on the 2012 viral short "Webcam," which has been viewed more than six million times on Vimeo.  "Ratter" explores the detrimental effects of our technological obsessions. Benson stars as Emma, a New York City graduate student being watched by a cyber-stalker who has hacked into all of her personal technology -- laptop, cell phone and other web connected devices -- to record her most intimate moments. Spwa acquires Slamdance thriller ‘Ratter’
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (Spwa) has confirmed to Screen its rights to first-time feature filmmaker Branden Kramer’s cyberthriller starring Ashley Benson.

Ratter will receive its Los Angeles premiere on June 14 at the Los Angeles Film Festival. It premiered in Park City last January and centres on a graduate student in New York who is menaced by a cyber stalker.

Matt McGorry and Rebecca Naomi Jones also star. Start Media financed the project and David Bausch, Jamie Zelermyer and Ben Browning served as producers.

The executive producer roster includes Michael Maher, Sarah Shepard, Matt Levin, Evelynda Rivera, Stefan Haverkamp, Jan Jaworski and Thomas Kropp.

Preferred Content, Xyz Films and Sloss Eckhouse LawCo brokered the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.

Ashley Benson Thriller ‘Ratter’ Bought by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired worldwide rights to Branden Kramer’s cyber-suspense thriller “Ratter,” which stars Ashley Benson (“Pretty Little Liars”).

Ratter” debuted at the 2015 Slamdance Film Festival and will screen Sunday at the Los Angeles Film Festival in the Nightfall section.

Kramer directed from his own script, based on the short film “Webcam,” which has been viewed more than 6 million times on Vimeo. Benson stars as a graduate student living alone in New York City, where she’s watched by a “ratter” who stalks her by hacking into all of her personal technology, eventually going from virtual stalking to physical stalking.

The film also stars Matt McGorry (“Orange is the New Black”) and Rebecca Naomi Jones (“The Switch”).

Ratter” is financed by Start Media and produced by David Bausch, Jamie Zelermyer and Ben Browning. Executive producers are Michael Maher, Sarah Shepard, Matt Levin, Evelynda Rivera, Stefan Haverkamp, Jan Jaworski and Thomas Kropp.

The L.A. Film Fest to Screen The Final Girls

After making quite an impression at the Stanley Film Festival, Todd Strauss-Schulson's meta horror hit, The Final Girls, will screen at the L.A. Film Fest next month, along with an advance look at MTV's Scream TV series and many more onscreen scares.
