James Cooper was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1985. Growing up, James always had a strong love of storytelling. In his younger years, he channeled his creativity into short comic books series that spoofed his childhood favorites. It was only after directing a short film as part of a Visual Communications class in High School that James connected with his love of film making.

Hungry to learn and develop his skills, James pursued screen writing in the form of classes taught by Max D. Adams (Excess Baggage, One For The Money). After gaining confidence in his writing ability and finishing two feature length screenplays, James enrolled at Toronto Film School to pursue his true passion: directing.

Three terms into the program at Toronto Film School, James quit, unhappy with lax teaching methods and the tendency to cater to the lowest common denominator. During his time there, he met Yaw Attuah, who would become his business partner in the formation of Rule Five Productions.

James has written and directed two short films under the Rule Five banner: Trigger and In Between Dreams, both of which premiered at the Big Bear Lake Film Festival in September 2008.
