Film Review: Mark Wahlberg Steals Unexpected Comedic Spotlight Amid ‘2 Guns’ Bromance

4 August 2013 8:37 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – While you wouldn’t normally compare the new action/comedy “2 Guns” with the comedy “I Love You, Man,” really the only difference between what Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington are doing now versus what Paul Rudd and Jason Segel did in 2009 is that “2 Guns” uses crime as the means by which two grown men fall in love with one another.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Based on the Boom! Studios graphic novels by Steven Grant, “2 Guns” is an unexpected bromance with just enough action to give its original subject matter justice and the surprising discovery of comedy to make it an overall worthy film to see. Mark Wahlberg doesn’t only co-star in this film; he steals the show. Refreshingly, he does not just his gun but even more so with his mouth.

Review: 2 Guns is A Solidly Entertaining, Comedy-Infused Action Film

2 August 2013 3:00 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

This summer, the Hollywood movie landscape has become increasingly littered with the desiccated corpses of would-be blockbusters which failed to find their audiences, many probably weary of the seemingly interchangeable array of loud, special-effects heavy spectacles offered to them weekly. Those looking for something different, but not willing to go the art house route, will find a very serviceable alternative in 2 Guns, Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur's unpretentious, fleet-footed, comedy-infused action film. Based on Steven Grant's five-issue graphic novel series, 2 Guns is solidly built upon the buddy cop movie template, with the snappy banter between stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg as essential to its overall effect as the shootouts and fisticuffs. In many ways, there is a pleasing throwback feel to much of this,...

See This, Skip That: From 2 Guns to Smurfs 2

2 August 2013 1:00 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Wahlberg and Washington are too much fun in 2 Guns, but People's writers say the little blue sprites will leave you smurfing annoyed. See this:2 GunsSome couples are just so gosh darn likable, you want to see them together all the time. I'm not saying Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington should drop their wives for each other - though I'm pretty sure there'd be a People cover in it for them if they did - but they might want to consider a movie marriage. With the easy chemistry and natural swagger they bring to the film, 2 Guns could be a whole new franchise. »

Interview: Talking Hot & Heavy Sex Scenes & More In '2 Guns' w/ Denzel Washington, Paula Patton

2 Guns stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg as a pair of operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run after a botched attempt to infiltrate a drug cartel. The big problem with their unexpected partnership: neither one knows the other is an undercover federal agent. Based on a series of graphic novels by Steven Grant, the action-packed buddy film comes to theaters August 2. As the cast promoted the film in New York this weekend, I had a chance to attend a press conference where Washington and Wahlberg along with co-stars Paula Patton and Bill Paxton discussed their experiences making the movie. ’2 Guns’ Review

2 August 2013 7:00 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

2 Guns (based on the Boom! Studios comic book series by writer Steven Grant) centers on a pair of bank robbers who, unknown to each other, are actually working as undercover government agents. Bobby Trench (Denzel Washington) works for the DEA, charged with infiltrating a Mexican drug cartel led by ruthless kingpin Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos). Marcus Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) is a former NCIS operative tasked with stealing from narcotic suppliers, so that the money can be used to fund Navy Seal black-ops missions across the border.

However, a bungled bank heist reveals Trench and Stigman’s mutual deception, leaving them disavowed by their superiors and hunted by a ruthless mercenary, Earl (Bill Paxton). The pair must overcome their distrust and work together to clear their names, as well as ...

'2 Guns' review: Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg misfire

2 August 2013 6:00 AM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Denzel Washington teams up with that King of Chemistry, Mark Wahlberg, in "2 Guns," a jokey-bloody action comedy that could use more jokes and less blood.

Wahlberg's Icelandic accomplice, "Contraband" director Baltasar Kormákur, manages little flash in this utterly generic double-and-triple-crossing tale of agents for competing agencies mixed up with drug lords, DEA stings, the CIA and "Naval Intelligence."

It's based on graphic novels (aka comic books), so don't overthink it.

Washington is Bobby, a border country smuggler / drug dealer trying to do business with Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos), a Mexican drug kingpin.

Stig (Wahlberg) is Bobby's mouthy, trigger-happy sidekick, the one who cracks that Papi looks "like a Mexican Albert Einstein," who stuffs his face with Mexican fried chicken as he yells at the cruelty of Mexican henchmen who shoot at the heads of chickens buried up to their necks for target practice.

For some reason, Bobby and Stig »

’2 Guns’ a moderately enjoyable throwback to 80s buddy comedies

2 Guns

Directed by Baltasar Kornákur

Written by Blake Masters

USA, 2013

The charm to 2 Guns is that it’s content to not try too hard. This is the kind of movie that will find a home on HBO and cable networks like FX in a year’s time, and play to a wide enough group of people who vaguely remember elements of the film, from its two leads, Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg; to the sneering bad guys, Bill Paxton and Edward James Olmos; to various gritty if not terribly remarkable gunfights. There isn’t much more to 2 Guns than offering a throwback to the uber-violent buddy comedies of the 1980s, and while it isn’t nearly as good as its predecessors, the film is a mostly fun, breezy nod to the past.

2 Guns – The Review

1 August 2013 8:46 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Review by Michael Haffner

With all the dynamic duos that have graced the screen over the years, it’s kind of shocking that it has taken this long for Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington to team-up. Especially considering the fact that both actors often juggle many of the same types of roles. An equal amount of time is given in their respective careers to more serious and dramatic fare with interludes of action intertwined. Wahlberg will do a film like the action-comedy The Other Guys and follow it up with a more serious award contender like The Fighter; much earlier he did the same with Boogie Nights followed by The Big Hit (which was anything but). Washington also will do films like The Hurricane and Flight but pepper in some more fun and explosive roles with Man On Fire and Out Of Time. Some action fans might even be shocked »

Two mistrusting buddies generate laughs and explosions in crime comedy 2 Guns There are celluloid spirits floating above the cinemas showing the zesty, zippy action thriller 2 Guns, based on Steven Grant's graphic novel about DEA agent Bobby Trench (Denzel Washington) and naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) who are tricked into stealing money from a corrupt CIA officer (Bill Paxton) while pretending to be criminals. Past action hits like Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hours come to mind thanks to director Baltasar Kormákur’s perfect balance of bloody violence and hearty laughs. ’2 Guns’ Interview: Denzel Washington & Mark Wahlberg on Being Buddy Cops

[Warning: Spoilers Ahead for '2 Guns']

-

2 Guns is, in many ways, a throwback film. It’s a throwback to the films of Sam Peckinpah, it’s a throwback to the ’80s buddy cop comedy, it has some shades of film noir, and so on. It’s also an adaptation of a little known comic book of the same name by Steven Grant.

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg play Bobby Trench and Marcus Stigman – two undercover agents (DEA and NCIS, respectively) completely unaware of each other’s undercover status – who get embroiled in a war between a drug kingpin (Edward James Olmos), an amoral CIA agent (Bill Paxton), ...

Director Baltasar Kormakur on 2 Guns, Everest and Vikings!

In recent years, he.s also started to get noticed in Hollywood, having a huge hit with Mark Wahlberg and 2012.s Contraband , itself based on an Icelandic crime thriller. Now he has 2 Guns , a high stakes crime comedy that pairs two of Hollywood.s biggest stars, Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, which is loosely based on a Boom! I haven’t been paying much attention to Vertigo’s new line-up recently. I did scan a recent preview of their new launches and what I saw didn’t really excite me. Which is why Collider was such a pleasant surprise. I hadn’t seen anything about a sci-fi action comic in said previews, especially not one with such a wild debut. I’m glad that there’s finally something in their current roster that appeals to me personally and I »

Once You've Seen 2 Guns, You've Seen 'em All

30 July 2013 9:00 PM, PDT | Village Voice | See recent Village Voice news »

All you need for a movie are two guys and two guns. Unless that movie is 2 Guns, in which case you probably need a good deal more.

The problem with so many current action movies, this one included, is that once you've seen one, you can't help feeling you've seen them all. 2 Guns is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, who gave us last summer's acceptably entertaining Contraband, an action-thriller with a breezy, agreeable tone. 2 Guns is pretty much more of the same: Even though the plots of the two movies are completely different—this one is adapted from the Boom! Studios graphic novels by Steven Grant—2 Guns, with its hypercomplicated plot and semi-gritty, just-rolled-out-of-bed visuals, comes off as similar to 1,001 things we »

Film Review: ‘2 Guns’

30 July 2013 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg make for a very enjoyable pair of double-crossed undercover operatives in “2 Guns,” another fleet, unpretentious caper pic from Icelandic auteur Baltasar Kormakur, who previously teamed with Wahlberg on 2012’s sleeper hit “Contraband.” Here as there, Kormakur shows he knows his way around an action movie better than most, keeping the pace quick, the banter lively and the old-school, mostly CGI-free thrills delivering right on schedule. Independently financed (by Mark Damon’s Foresight Intl.), the $84 million pic could be just what the doctor ordered to cure domestic distrib Universal’s post-“R.I.P.D.” box office blues, with offshore prospects equally solid.

Based on the 2008 Boom! Studios comics series by writer Steven Grant and illustrator Mateus Santolouco, the hyper-convoluted plot of “2 Guns” bears more than a passing resemblance to Oliver Stone’s recent “Savages,” with its dense web of American military types and government agents »

Uniting two of the biggest stars of their respective generations, 2 Guns will be heading into Us cinemas this weekend, promising an adrenaline-fuelled actioner for the multiplex.

And with its Stateside release so close, a new red-band trailer has debuted over on IGN, giving us a new, unsuitable for work look at the action/comedy.

Academy Award(R) winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in 2 Guns, an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together.
