Cannes Film Review: ‘Risk’

19 May 2016 3:13 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In what is essentially a prequel to her Oscar-winning portrait of Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden, “Citizenfour,” director Laura Poitras leverages incredible access to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange into an intimate and somewhat unwieldy portrait of the world’s single most controversial media personality. Some five years in the making, “Risk” ironically feels like a bit of a rush job, presumably back-burnered in 2013 when her subject presumably handed her an even bigger scoop. Though one can imagine Assange impatiently wasting away under political asylum at London’s Ecuadorian embassy for years while Poitras went off to focus on that story, her long-overdue Assange portrait is all the more essential now that “Citizenfour” has validated much of what WikiLeaks stands for. Even so, the American public seems to have an allergic reaction to Assange, making this a far riskier prospect for any distributor hoping to repeat that film’s $3.5 million success.

See Christina Aguilera Sing Rihanna, Adele on 'Ellen'

16 May 2016 8:16 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Christina Aguilera visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show for a friendly round of "Heads Up." In the game, Aguilera has 60 seconds to impersonate a variety of female singers, which DeGeneres then has to guess. It's not the most difficult of games, but it provided Aguilera an opportunity to give booming, albeit brief, renditions of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl."

Aguilera has showcased her impersonation abilities in the past, most notably during a Tonight Show stop in February 2015. However, toward the end of the game, »

Christina Aguilera's Impression of Rihanna's "Work" Will Make You Lol

Not only can Christina Aguilera sing (like, really sing), but she can also belt out other artists' hit songs like it's nobody's business. The Voice coach stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday and proved during a fun game of Heads Up! that she can tackle just about any tune. The game, which required Ellen to guess who Christina was impersonating based on her voice, included hits from Katy Perry, Whitney Houston, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. The whole thing was almost as good as her epic game of Wheel of Musical Impressions with Jimmy Fallon back in 2015. Watch her in action in the video above! »

Well in: how Lady Gaga could teach herself Cilla Black's Scouse

13 May 2016 2:00 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Dionne Warwick said the pop star was to play the Liverpool favorite in a film – a claim Gaga denied. But just in case, here’s how to get the perfect accent

There were confusing scenes in Cannes on Friday when Dionne Warwick announced a biopic, then claimed that Lady Gaga was signed up to play her “musical nemesis” Cilla Black. “It was just an easy choice, and she wanted to do it,” Warwick said.

This seemed to come as news to Lady Gaga, whose team rapidly said she had never even heard of the film – although by the end of Friday Warwick was insisting that this was a case of crossed wires, and that she is in fact attached. But whatever happens, this film is being made and our Cilla is going to feature. The fact that somebody thought Gaga would be suitable makes it clear that this portrayal will »

Dionne Warwick Insists Lady Gaga Will Be in Her Biopic (Exclusive)

At a Cannes party on Friday night, Dionne Warwick spoke to Variety about the shocking casting reversal involving Lady Gaga on the biopic “Warwick.”

Earlier in the day, Warwick held a press conference in Cannes, where she revealed that a movie about her life was set to begin production in the fall. She announced that LeToya Luckett (one of the original members of Destiny’s Child) would play her, and that Lady Gaga had been cast as her “arch-nemesis,” the late British singer Cilla Black.

The project made international headlines. But only a few hours later, Gaga’s representatives issued a strong rebuttal to the casting news, which had been distributed via a press release from Rogers and Cowan. “Lady Gaga is not attached and will not appear in the project,” her publicist said in a statement. “Reports of Gaga starring in the project are false.”

Latoya Luckett will play Warwick in the forthcoming film from the writer of The Doors.

Lady Gaga is to play Warwick’s rival and “musical nemesis” Cilla Black in an upcoming biopic of singer Dionne Warwick.

The Us singer-songwriter will play the late Liverpudlian performer in Dionne, it was announced at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival today.

Mario van Peebles is in advanced discussions to direct and legendary singer Warwick was in town herself to tell the press that she will be played as a younger woman by Latoya Luckett - an original member of Destiny’s Child.

Other cast names confirmed include Danny Glover as Warwick’s father Mansell and Olympia Dukakis, who will co-star as Marlene Dietrich, Warwick’s mentor. Dietrich, the singer joked, was the woman who introduced her to high couture and made a hefty dent in her bank balance in the process.
