Chilean Cinema Punches Above Its Weight

“We’re there to talk about cinema, not national flags,” Cannes’ topper Thierry Fremaux argued after announcing Cannes’ Official Selection this year. That said, 2017’s Cannes looks set to serve another reminder of one of world cinema’s biggest success stories: Chile’s emergence as a foremost Latin America’s filmmaking nation.

Led by Marcela Said’s Critics’ Week entry “Los Perros,” Chile boasts four films selected across major sections. From Latin America, only Argentina compares in presence.

At Berlin, “A Fantastic Woman,” from Chile’s Sebastian Lelio, was arguably the single most talked-about competition title.

Match Factory bolsters Cannes slate

Exclusive: Sales company adds films from Alejandro Fadel, Ísold Uggadóttir.

Midway through this year’s Cannes Film Festival market, The Match Factory has acquired two titles - And Breathe Normally by Ísold Uggadóttir and Die, Monster, Die by Alejandro Fadel.

Die, Monster, Die, the latest film from the Argentinean director Alejandro Fadel, is soon to start shooting in the Argentinean province of Mendoza.

The project was developed at Cannes’ Cinéfondation Résidence and is Fadel’s second feature as a writer and director. 

Fadel co-directed Love (First Part) which premiered in Venice’s Critic’s Week. As a writer, he has worked with Pablo Trapero, Damián Szifrón, Walter Salles, Adrian Caetano and Peter Weber, among others.

His first feature The Wild Ones (Los Salvajes) [pictured] premiered in Cannes’ Critic’s Week in 2012.

Cannes: Films From Rio’s ‘Butterflies,’ ‘Clamor,’ ‘Voices’ To Pitch at Cannes Producers Network

Cannes— Rita Toledo’s “The Man Who Talked to Butterflies,” Felipe Sholl’s “Voices” and “Manu De Martino’s “Clamour” are three out of a total of six projects presented on May 19 at a Cannes’ Producers Network industry breakfast.

Films from Rio represents a development and promotion drive by some of Brazil’s major cultural, industry and training agencies, with the program, now in its third edition, taking six projects and their producers to the most important film markets in the world.

“The Marché du Film in Cannes is their final stop, after producers attended and worked at the Rio Festival and then Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur,” said Cannes Film Market’s head of Industry programs Julie Bergeron.

Iffr: Hubert Bals Fund restructures

Changes made to fund which support filmmakers from developing countries.

The Hubert Bals Fund has undergone a makeover. The Fund, founded in 1988 to support filmmakers from developing countries and one of the core parts of International Film Festival Rotterdam, has restructured.

As Iwana Chronis (soon to leave her position as Head of the Fund) explains:

“It seemed like a good a decision to cancel the fall (2016) selection round in order to have a moment to breathe and see how we could organise things differently and then to re-start at the festival with the new team, the new policies and the new financing (structure).”

With Chronis stepping down, Marit van den Elshout (head of Iffr Pro) will take over at the helm. She will be working closely with Iffr Pro Fund coordinator Fay Brennan.

The Fund has a track record for supporting films from talents like Chen Kaige, Carlos Reygadas and Elia Suleiman early in their careers. There »
