April’s horror and sci-fi home media releases are ending in a big way, as we have a lot of genre goodness to look forward to with this week’s 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD offerings. In terms of new titles, Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall is arriving this Tuesday on a variety of formats, and both Gia Elliott’s psychological thriller Take Back the Night and Dead by Midnight Y2Kill are headed to DVD as well.
Arrow Video is giving Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys the 4K treatment this week, and Vinegar Syndrome has several titles headed to 4K this week, too, including Scanner Cop, Scanner Cop II: The Showdown, Madman, and a Schizoid/X-Ray double feature. Severin Films is showing some love to the Ozploitation flick Stone with a Special Edition release, and Agfa/Bleeding Skull are putting out Emily Hagins’ Pathogen on Blu-ray, too.

Shock talks to the director of Jim Vanbebber documentary Diary Of A Deadbeat. For every fan of independent filmmaking, the name Jim Vanbebber isn’t a new one. The Ohio-born legend of underground cinema is probably best-known for his 1980s action flick Deadbeat At Dawn and his mind-fuck follow-up based on the real-life slaying of actress…

Regular readers will know that I am not a big fan of the slasher genre. A lot of the times, I am just bored to tears. I would much rather watch a giallo when it’s at its most convoluted, than a ‘classic’ slasher. That being said, I’m a fair guy. I believe every film should be watched at least once before you offer your opinion. Thankfully, the lovely folks over at Vinegar Syndrome have been sending over many films that I have never heard of and films that I wouldn’t usually check out. Last year they released the slasher classic, Graduation Day. I was pleasantly surprised by the film...

Know who's really killing indie filmmakers? Other wannabe indie filmmakers. Since making a movie has become so easy and Diy, the market has been flooded with trash by people who have no business even owning a camera. This makes finding the promising indie films an absolute chore.
Still, we wade through the film mire, and when something captures our eyes, we bring it to your attention. Take Adam Ahlbrandt's Hunters for example. Test screenings of the film have resulted in a 50 percent walkout ratio, and apparently one man had a panic attack following his viewing.
It is set to be released by ToeTag Films in the Us and Illusions Unlimited in Germany later this year.
The flick stars Linnea Quigley, J.D. Brown, Kacie Marie, Tina Krause, Haley Madison, Jason Vail, Mel Heflin, Shaun Paul Costello, Tiffany Carroll, Victor Bonacore, Jadie Goodpasture, and Genoveva Rossi. Ahlbrandt directs from a script he wrote.

Fuck the Oscars. Last month we were subjected to the 84th annual Academy Awards, which I now watch strictly for nostalgia reasons. As a kid, I would tape record it off TV, cutting out the commercials and re-watching it over and over daily. I would go see every film that was nominated in the theater, knew every category, and had my picks down to a science. I was obsessed with it, every aspect of it. Jack Nicholson was the first "movie star" I was obsessed with, so the chance to see him make his yearly cameo was just a thrill to me. Now it seems it’s just my way of seeing my favorite actor depressingly age into his golden years. I watch it with frustration, boredom, confusion, and embarrassment as Billy Crystal makes an unfunny fool of himself with flat jokes and stupid musical numbers.

The teasing is over! This here is the real deal. The moment we wait all year for: The lineup for the powerful, the mighty Boston Underground Film Festival, which is set to run March 25 to April 1. Now in its 12th year, Buff shows no sign of slowing down or taking it easy. In fact, this might be their most demented and transgressive edition yet.
There are homages to Giallo horror, tributes to the grand grindhouse tradition of sleaze and exploitation, sex and violence galore — both separately and together — plus, a resurrected ’80s slasher classic that all combine into an epic celebration of everything that is vicious and twisted in this world. But, in a fun way, ya know.
Alas, I haven’t seen any of the feature films that are playing this year, so I can’t offer any special recommendations of those. Although, there are many (most) that I...

While there literally seems to be a film festival on every corner, I am hearing of more and more each day. Even in my own back yard of New York City, little did I know that I would be attending the 9th annual film festival in the quaint sea side town of Coney Island. Yes, on every corner of the world. While my boyfriend was at that very moment up in Calgary at their International Film Fest in Canada, I was at one of the best horror short line ups in the world that night. See what I mean by every corner of the world? Not to mention the Sitges International going on right now in Spain and who knows how many other festivals are happening as I write. I think one can make a tour out of it. But the Coney Island Film Festival was special in so many ways.

Alternative Cinema sent over further details on Shock Festival, the DVD counterpart to Stephen Romano’s widely praised book, which presented an illustrated history of exploitation films that never were. The three-disc set, coming February 9 on the Bloody Earth Films label, combines trailers and other promo material from B-movies both real and fictional, and we got an exclusive trailer and wallpapers to share with you as well.
The Shock Festival set, which we previously reported on here, includes over four hours of trailers and TV spots from horror and other genre flicks of the ’70s and ’80s, digitally remastered from original film elements. The third disc is a CD containing three more hours of radio spots, plus original music on MP3s for iPods, computers and CD players. In addition to all that nostalgic stuff, there’s an interview with veteran drive-in producer Sam Sherman, a collector’s poster with Romano artwork,...

The folks over at Fever Dreams just dropped us a line that they’re having an open casting call for their latest venture, Late Fee. They’re seeking bodies for the wraparound scenes linking two previously completed shorts, The Pick-up and Damnation, and sent a few exclusive new pics from the latter as well (see them below).
The Late Fee concerns a couple who decide to check out their local video store on Halloween, with disastrous results. The Pick Up (which we last reported on here) and Damnation are short-form follow-ups to Fever Dreams’ previous features Flesh For The Beast and Shadow: Dead Riot respectively, both written and directed by John Carchietta and Carl Morano. The movie will receive limited theatrical release as well as DVD distribution in October. Extras are needed for Late Fee’s All Hallows’ party scene, so this is a chance to dress up in your...

Independent filmmaker Victor Bonacore (read about him here) sent over word about his production company Chainsaw Kiss’ upcoming event at Manhattan’s Anthology Film Archives (32 2nd Avenue). The free show, which takes place Saturday, June 27 starting at 6:30 p.m., will be hosted by scream-queen legend Linnea Quigley (pictured).

The extravaganza offers the opportunity to not only see these films on the big screen, but meet much of the talent behind them. So mark your calendars and come check it out! And head over to the Chainsaw Kiss MySpace page here.

The minute I got the go ahead for this blog, I e-mailed Victor Bonacore hoping to score a sit down. After meeting at the La Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in early 2008, I had quickly become a fan of his short films, and I wasn’t the only one. Not only has Bonacore won praise from numerous critics for his shorts Pretty and Eat Me (which have found distribution in the UK), they have been screened at festivals around the world. Most recently, his music video for Johnnie Lee Jordan’s The Wigly premiered, garnering early raves for his unique take on the love song. Infusing his work with a rare blend of horror and romanticism, and recently founding the production company ChainsawKiss, Bonacore is determined to expand his work. And with 2009 seeing the completion of no less then three shorts, he is truly a talent to look out for.
