Matt Smith unsuccessfully auditioned for The Inbetweeners prior to landing his iconic Doctor Who role, Digital Spy has learned exclusively. The show's writer Iain Morris revealed that Smith made it down to the final two in the audition process for lead character Will - later won by actor Simon Bird - but was turned down because of his good looks. Jonathan Ross to return as host, while BBC1's Outnumbered receives five nods including best sitcom

Alan Carr and Michael McIntyre have topped the list of nominations for this year's British Comedy Awards, with three each.

Hosted by Jonathan Ross after his absence last year following the "Sachsgate" scandal, the awards will see McIntyre and Carr go head to head in both the best comedy entertainment personality and entertainment programme categories.

BBC1's hit family sitcom Outnumbered, written by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, has received five nominations, including one for best sitcom, and all three of the show's child stars are up for an award.

Ramona Marquez is in the best female comedy newcomer category for her role as Karen, against Rebekah Station and Tanya Franks from BBC3's Pulling.

Tyger Drew-Honey and Daniel Roche – who play Jake and Ben – have been nominated for best male newcomer, alongside the Guardian columnist Charlie Brooker. »

New 'Inbetweeners' draws 958,000 for E4

The new series of The Inbetweeners made a strong start for E4 last night, according to early viewing figures. The opening episode, which saw Simon Bird return as Will, drew 958k (5.5%) between 10pm and 10.30pm. Last year, the first episode of series one of the E4 comedy managed just 238k (1.3%). Also on multichannel stations, the new episode of ER logged 527k (2.7%) for More4 at 9pm, while 391k (2%) tuned in for Bones on Sky1. BBC One documentary How Woolies Became Wellies: One Woman's Fight For The High Street came top during the 9pm hour, putting in 4.73m (21.9%) for the channel. The second episode of The Mentalist performed well for Five, averaging 3.25m (15.1%). However, it failed to beat last week's opener. Inbetweeners 'more realistic than Skins'

Simon Bird has said that his show The Inbetweeners gives viewers a more realistic depiction of teenage life than Skins. The actor, who plays Will Mackenzie in the show, told the BBC that the cast often misbehave on set because they are dressed in school uniform.
