Red Dawn (2012)

Review by Dan Clark

Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Isabel Lucas, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Josh Peck, Connor Cruise, Edwin Hodge, Will Yun Lee, Jeffrey Dean Morgan | Written by Carl Ellsworth, Jeremy Passmore | Directed by Dan Bradley

Remaking Red Dawn is an intriguing choice. The original was very much a product of its time that combined the zeitgeist attitude of the Cold War era with the overblown action style of the nineteen eighties. Now Russia is our ally and the fear of invasion has all but disappeared. This remake also had to contend with a number of political and financial difficulties. Originally schedule for release in 2010 it was shelved due to MGM’s money woes. During that two year layoff the film underwent a few changes. Initially the Chinese army was selected to replace Russia as the invading force, but recently the Chinese market has become more and more lucrative for movie studios. »

Movie Review - Red Dawn (2012)

Red Dawn, 2012.

Directed by Dan Bradley.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Connor Cruise, Isabel Lucas, Brett Cullen, Edwin Hodge, Alyssa Diaz, Will Yun Lee and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Synopsis:

A group of teenagers look to save their town from an invasion of North Korean soldiers.

Happy Holidays!  The Christmas-Hanukkah-Kwanza season is upon us.  And thankfully Hollywood tends to overstuff our cinematic stockings with so many movies that it’s like a film smorgasbord.  What better way to celebrate the season of giving than by seeing a jingoistic, xenophobic piece of American propaganda with ridiculously good looking people swatting down the red menace with a furrowed brow and a seemingly endless supply of ammunition?  Red Dawn is the gift that keeps on giving!

I was a big fan of the 1985 original.  How big you ask?  Big enough to have watched the film dozens of times where it »

They know movies, and will give you the straight scoop about 'em.  Each week, we're posting brand new video from the Schmoes that'll give their take on the new releases. Another remake nobody asked for comes to theaters this Thanksgiving week: Red Dawn, starring Chris Hemsworth as the leader of a group of teens (Josh Hutcherson, Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki and Connor Cruise) who band together against a foreign invasion to liberate their town and take back their freedom.  Yadda yadda… all we care about is that it gives the Schmoes a reason to talk about their favorite...

Connor Cruise Goes To War In Clip From 'Red Dawn' - The 'Red Scare' Revisited

23 November 2012 7:32 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

We really haven't given him, or this film any coverage; it's about time we did, don't you think? Tom Cruise's black son, Connor Cruise is making only his second on-screen appearance in what I'd say is his first major role (he played a young Will Smith in Seven Pounds), co-starring in a remake of Red Dawn - the 1984 action film about a group of teenagers who form an insurgency when their town is invaded - this time by North Korean soldiers. The young cast is led by Chris Hemsworth. By the way, Edwin Hodge, brother of Aldis Hodge, is also part of the cast. The film was actually shot in 2009, and completed in 2010, and is finally »

Red Dawn (2012) Blu-ray Release Date Already Outed

22 November 2012 1:46 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

MGM's remake of Red Dawn starring Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Adrianne Palicki, Josh Peck, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise and Edwin Hodge finally overcame delays caused by the company's bankruptcy proceedings and arrived in theaters yesterday riding a wave of horrific reviews from critics. The remake will probably vanish from theaters relatively quickly and, as we have just learned, will make its way to home video as fast as possible.

Online retailer Amazon.com has published a DVD page for Red Dawn complete with a February 26, 2013 release date. That is the earliest possible release distributor Film District could have chosen given the 90-day rule between theatrical and home video release.

We fully expect the Red Dawn Blu-ray release date to be the same and have our eyes open for when the film's Blu-ray page at Amazon updates with the correct cover art and a pre-order link. »

Film Review: Geopolitics Aside, ‘Red Dawn’ is Decent Action Movie

21 November 2012 5:57 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Given the state of the post-9/11 world, and the delicate negotiations between nations, remaking “Red Dawn” posed a considerable risk. But the film takes a ‘“damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,” approach, and pulls off an adrenaline rush featuring Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson and Josh Peck.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

It’s World War III all over again, this time featuring the North Koreans instead of the Russians. Like the original film, it features common teenagers and young adults turned into a guerrilla military force. Also like its predecessor, “Red Dawn” is stocked with the appropriately aged actors of the moment, and creates their heroes by defining them as underground vigilantes. It becomes about stiffening the spine, fighting the enemy and kicking ass – and the movie delivers that in spades – mostly with firefights and explosions. The actions sequences are well staged, and like the 1984 film produces the same weird chill of seeing »

Red Dawn – The Review

20 November 2012 9:59 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

If you’re anything like me, the first thought in your head when you heard about the remake of the 1984 classic Red Dawn was to shrug it off thinking “whatever.” Then, as the film is completed and nearing release, we hear that instead of being invaded by the Russians like the original — which is entirely understandable — or, as a way to update the story, invaded by the Chinese, which was the original plan, it turns out we’re being invaded by North Korea. Exactly. My first thought was… [scoff] “Yeah, right. How does that work?”

[Biting my tongue...] As it turns out, it works rather well. Surprised? I am. Red Dawn (2012) is, structurally, more or less loosely the same film as the 1984 original. I mean, when it comes down to brass tacks, both films are about the U.S. being caught off guard by a surprise invasion from a Communist enemy, occupied, then ultimately »

‘Red Dawn’ remake feels positively regressive

Chris Hemsworth leads a ragtag group of civilian rebels in the 2012 remake of Red Dawn

Red Dawn

Directed by Dan Bradley

Written by Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore

USA, 2012

Apparently, the original script for the 2012 remake of John Milius’ 1984 Red Dawn intended the invading forces to be Chinese, but MGM changed it to be North Koreans in post-production so as to not offend the ever-growing Chinese market; yet the poster for the film has “welcome to the home of the brave” scrawled all over it. Brave, indeed. Strange as it may seem, this type of empty and counterintuitive rhetoric is axiomatic in director Dan Bradley’s version of Red Dawn, a film whose rousing message of do-it-yourself patriotism will likely only be enjoyed by those unable to see past its heavy irony.

The film stars Chris Hemsworth as Jed Eckert, an on-leave soldier who leads a ragtag group of civilian rebels (Josh Hutcherson, »

Interview: Josh Peck Keeps Kicking it in ‘Red Dawn’

19 November 2012 3:16 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – When we last saw teen idol Josh Peck (“Drake & Josh”), he was selling special ice cream in the 2008 film, “The Wackness.” That film established him as an actor who could handle more adult themes. He expands further in the action movie “Red Dawn,” playing a student turned soldier.

Peck is best known for portraying Josh Nichols in the hugely popular Nickelodeon series “Drake & Josh,” a teenage version of “The Odd Couple” that co-starred Drake Bell. Raised in New York City by his single parent mother, he began his show business career as a young stand-up comedian. He took a role on Nickelodeon’s “The Amanda Show” in 2000, and “Drake & Josh” was spun off of that series. From 2004 to 2008, the well received sitcom was one of Nickelodeon’s most popular. The final appearance of the duel was in “Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh” (2008), which broke the record for highest viewership of »

Title: Red Dawn Directed By: Dan Bradley Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise, Jeffrey Dean Morgan The “Red Dawn” remake has had a cloud over its head ever since MGM’s financial difficulties, the last minute enemy nationality change and the long delayed release, however, as a proponent of the 1984 original and a true believer that the story had major remake potential, some hope prevailed. Red Dawn trailer gets patriotic and Lady Wolverines show us their guns

You might want to stand up and put your hand over your heart for the new patriotic trailer for Red Dawn, but things lighten up a bit when the Lady Wolverines show they can hang with the guys.

There are a couple of new scenes in the new patriotic version of the Red Dawn trailer but it’s the soundtrack that adds the patriotic touch.

Video: ‘Red Dawn’ exclusive movie clip

However, the Lady Wolverines featurette offers some great new peeks at the movie, along with some commentary from the girls that do their part to defend the USA from invading armies, which is a nice touch because the women in the original movie really didn’t get a chance to shine.

Red Dawn, starring Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, opens fire in theaters on November 21.
