Disney is about to introduce its first Latina princess to audiences!

Meet Princess Elena of Avalor, a confident and compassionate teenager living in an enchanted fairytale kingdom inspired by various Latin cultures and folk stories. A 16-year-old princess, she is a bold, caring, funny and clever ascendant to the throne of Avalor.

The new character, voiced by Young & Hungry’s Aimee Carrero, will debut in a very special episode of Disney Junior’s Sofia the First airing in 2016.

Following Elena’s introduction, the character will then launch her own spinoff show, Elena of Avalor, later that year.

She’ll be joined by several friends, including Mateo, a wizard in training, and Skylar, a magical flying creature.

No, you did not go back time of when Sofia the First was first airing. Disney Junior is once again trying to reclaim the title with a new spin-off, Elena of Avalor. Elena is a 16 year old who comes from a rich Latin background. Aimee Carrero will be the voice of Elena and she will be introduced in 2016. Disney Junior of course had the following statement regarding this news and upcoming spin-off. Here is what they had to say.

The character, Elena of Avalor, is described as “inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.” She’ll be introduced during a special episode of Disney Junior’s “Sofia the First,” which is slated for a 2016 premiere.

Disney Junior is spinning off its popular "Sophia the First" TV series, and with it, introducing a new princess to the fold: Elena.

The teenage Latina princess will star in her own show, "Elena of Avalor," and will be introduced during an episode of "Sophia." Elena, per Variety, "has been trapped for decades in the signature jeweled amulet that is one of best-known elements of the current kiddie series."

The synopsis continues:

In the series, Sofia discovers how Princess Elena was trapped inside the amulet, and sets about to help Elena regain her human form and return to the kingdom of Avalor. Elena was trapped in the jewel after trying to protect her little sister and grandparents from Shuriki, an evil sorceress.
