Now, they're trying a hybrid sitcom with Son of Zorn. How will it perform? Will this show be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned. On Son of Zorn, a warrior (voice of Jason Sudeikis) from a faraway island in the Pacific Ocean – where everything and everyone is animated -- returns to Orange County in California to win back his live-action ex-wife and their teenage son. The live-action cast includes Johnny Pemberton, Cheryl Hines, Tim Meadows, and Artemis Pebdani. The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. TV Review: ‘Son of Zorn’

12 September 2016 8:09 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Son of Zorn” may seem at first glance to have an unusual premise: Its lead character, the muscle-bound Zorn of the title, is animated, as are a few other elements sprinkled throughout the show. However, the majority of the new comedy takes place in live-action settings populated with flesh-and-blood humans. Though a little strange, the mixture is never unsettling, in large part because this efficient and reasonably amusing sitcom is safely encased in several other familiar TV formats.

At its heart, “Son of Zorn” is a classic fish-out-of-water tale; Zorn is a heroic, but not terribly smart warrior from the kind of cartoon kingdom familiar to viewers of “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” or its spinoff, “She-Ra: Princess of Power.” Feeling the pull of family and a need to reconnect with his teenage son, Zorn leaves a blood-spattered life in the mythical kingdom of Zephyria and heads to the real world, where »

Son of Zorn: Is Fox's Semi-Animated Comedy Too Cartoonish to Succeed?

11 September 2016 5:29 PM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

If you’ve ever asked yourself “What would it be like if He-Man relocated to Southern California and had an illegitimate son?,” then by golly, does Fox have the sitcom for you.

Son of Zorn, which got off to an early start on Sunday following the Giants/Cowboys game, is a semi-animated comedy about a swashbuckling warrior (voiced by Last Man on Earth‘s Jason Sudeikis) modeled after the Most Powerful Man in the Universe. ‘Son of Zorn’ Star Cheryl Hines Explains How to Act With a Cartoon Character

11 September 2016 10:36 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The live human beings on “Son of Zorn” aren’t staring at a tennis ball on a stick during takes. They’re actually pretty much looking at “nothing” at all, star Cheryl Hines revealed to TheWrap. Zorn, the beefcake animated defender of Zephyria voiced by Jason Sudeikis, requires Hines and castmates Tim Meadows and Johnny Pemberton to crane their necks to mammoth — but exacting — altitudes, posing a technical problem for Fox’s upcoming live-action/animation hybrid sitcom. “We’re going so quickly, and Zorn moves around in a scene,” Hines said. “For whatever reason it just works better if we »

Son Of Zorn Season 1 Review

9 September 2016 2:56 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

One episode was provided prior to broadcast.

As one of the boldest and bravest new comedies this season (and, maybe, of the last few years), Fox’s new single-camera sitcom Son of Zorn disappointingly falls back on a few expected sources of humor in a way that all-too-often negates the bravura, bananas premise of the show. Set initially in the far-off island land of Zephyria, Son of Zorn eventually migrates into the real world – California in particular – while keeping the animated sprites of anything related to Zephyria’s Saturday morning, G.I. Joe day-dreamscape very much intact.

There’s wonder in that, in the way that co-creators Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne constantly come up with interesting and surprising bits of Zephyria to throw into the real world, but the wonder stops short of awe – and awesomeness – for every dud of a joke. And, in a comedy pilot, there’s »

Son Of Zorn Review – TV – Can Fox Keep Selling Bonkers Shows? Looks Like

8 September 2016 12:37 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

As the battle rages among the plethora of TV networks, one of the main points each seems to aim for is to become, at least in part, its own niche, with a certain kind of show becoming part of its brand. Fox’s effort is difficult to put a label on, which is somehow part of the label.

With shows like The Last Man on Earth, Scream Queens, Wayward Pines, and Sleep Hollow, not to mention the crossbranding with FX and Fxx, if there’s a truly bonkers premise out there, the chances are it’s on Fox.

It’s hard to go further down that road than Son of Zorn, which sets out to relay the life and times of Zorn (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), resident and protector of an island of cartoon characters who are in constant battle with cartoon villains. The story begins as Zorn is about »

‘Son of Zorn’ Producers Have Made Their Non-Traditional Animated/Live-Action Comedy As Traditional As Possible

8 September 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Fox’s “Son of Zorn” may be the most original idea of any TV show this fall.

The animated “Zorn,” voiced by Jason Sudeikis, is the self-described “Defender of Zephyria, Conqueror of the tribes of Agon, decapitator of the dark herdsmen of Grith. Now he’s moving to Orange County, where he hopes to reconnect with his estranged 17-year-old son Alan (Johnny Pemberton) and his ex-wife Edie (Cheryl Hines). Throwing a wrench in that plan: Edie’s new fiance, the sensitive psychology professor Craig (Tim Meadows). Realizing his son hasn’t grown up the way he’d like, Zorn rents an apartment, gets a job and decides to stick around in suburbia.

For our new podcast “Turn It On,” IndieWire talked to “Son of Zorn” showrunner Sally Bradford McKenna and director Eric Appel about the challenges of producing the animated/live-action comedy hybrid, and how the show isn’t as different as you’d think. »

Fall TV Preview: The 17 Most Anticipated Comedies of 2016

6 September 2016 7:27 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

“Mary + Jane”

September 5 on MTV

What Is It? From the writer/directors behind the cult favorite “Josie and the Pussycats” adaptation, this series follows two “ganjapeneurs” who run a weed delivery service in Los Angeles.

I’ll Like It If I Like… The “Broad City” influence is pretty clear, as the show is focused on the tight friendship between Jordan (Scout Durwood) and Paige (Jessica Rothe) and their stoner antics.

Why Should I Care? Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont’s unique approach to satirizing La hipster culture really help this show stand out from the pack of other female-led comedies, while also promising a more surreal touch. Durwood and Rothe also make for an enjoyable pairing. For fans of the pot comedy genre, it’s an easy sell.

Atlanta

September 6 on FX

What is it? Donald Glover of “Community” fame returns to TV in his most ambitious project yet, which he produces, »
