Mark Rylance Teases the Opening of Christopher Nolan’s “Pure” and “Simple” War Drama ‘Dunkirk’

19 July 2016 7:04 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Known for his densely plotted features — from his break-out film Memento through his Dark Knight trilogy and even his sci-fi spectacles — perhaps Christopher Nolan is paring things down a bit on the page for World War II drama Dunkirk, which is currently in production. In a new interview from star Mark Rylance, he discusses the film’s “simple” and “pure” approach, as well as teasing the opening.

“Chris is the most serious and interesting filmmaker. Every great filmmaker at some moment makes a war film. But Chris’ script-writing is so brilliant that I think he has the potential to make a very, very powerful and simple, pure war film about a miraculous loss. I think it has the potential to be just a marvelous film,” Rylance tells Empire. “With some of those old war films you used to get a lot of build-up, you play the guessing game: who’s »

Rylance Teases Chris Nolan's "Dunkirk"

18 July 2016 3:08 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

While next summer will be filled with the usual tentpoles made up of franchises and sequels, one of the biggest original works will be the latest effort from 'Dark Knight' trilogy director Christopher Nolan with the WW2 film "Dunkirk".

"Bridge of Spies" award winner Mark Rylance is one of the large ensemble assembled for the film and he tells Empire that Nolan is set to do something quite different from other films in the genre:

"Chris is the most serious and interesting filmmaker. Every great filmmaker at some moment makes a war film. Mark Rylance Champions Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk As A “Pure, Powerful” War Movie

18 July 2016 7:29 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Be it the pulse-pounding action of The Dark Knight trilogy or the mystical realism found in The Prestige, few would argue that Christopher Nolan’s movies hold the innate ability to visually enthral an audience, regardless of whether you’re a fan of the narrative content at the heart of the story.

Come 2017, that’s a trend that the filmmaker will look to uphold with Dunkirk, his WWII epic that chronicles the death-defying tale known as Operation Dynamo.

Currently lensing across northern France and parts of England, Dunkirk has piqued our curiosity for its awe-inspiring set photos, showcasing a huge infantry peppered across a ruined, war-torn beach – not to mention those reports suggesting Nolan and his team could be staging an action sequence that could well involve crashing a $5 million vintage WWII plane all in the name of pure, immersive cinema.

Unsurprisingly, Nolan’s latest will include a handful of IMAX sequences, »

Don't expect season two of BBC America's Thirteen  TV show. The drama thriller, which premiered in the Us on June 23rd will come to a close after its first season and TV series finale episode, airing in July. In UK, the finale aired back in March. At that time, creator Marnie Dickens told Radio Times that Thirteen was conceived as a mini-series which tells a complete story. So while Thirteen has not been cancelled in the traditional sense, it will not be renewed for a second season.

This five-party mystery thriller follows Ivy Moxham (Jodie Comer) on the day she escapes the cellar where she has been held prisoner for the last 13 years -- half her life. The Thirteen TV series cast also includes Aneurin Barnard, Richard Rankin, Valene Kane, Natasha Little, Stuart Graham, Katherine Rose Morley, Joe Layton, »

8 June 2016 9:55 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Esteemed director and all-round cinephile Christopher Nolan is aiming big with his WWII epic, Dunkirk.

Having already rented out a pair of old navy destroyers and assembled close to 1,000 extras for a massive action sequence, Nolan is gunning for a wartime spectacle that hasn’t been glimpsed on the silver screen since Steven Spielberg and Saving Private Ryan stormed Omaha Beach.

Now, a new report arriving by way of Indie Revolver suggests that the filmmaker and Warner Bros. are ready to purchase a $5 million vintage plane – likely a German Luftwafee – to be retrofitted with IMAX cameras and, after staging a few sure-to-be stunning action shots, gunned down in a ball of flames.

That’s exactly the kind of lavish creative process Christopher Nolan has developed a reputation for, and considering that Warner is hoping Dunkirk can reach similar box office heights as Inception ($835 million), it’s little wonder why the »
