Mike Knobloch: Defined by Tools of the Trade

9 December 2015 2:30 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Without even knowing his job title as Universal Pictures’ president of film music and publishing, it would only take once glance at Mike Knobloch’s office to make a pretty good guess about the type of work he does. With two vintage keyboards (one Rhodes, one Wurlitzer), an electronic drum set, a bass guitar, a ukelele and a good half dozen guitars mounted to the walls, the exec’s office appears to be just a few microphones and a mixing board away from serving as a freestanding recording studio on its own.

Instruments aren’t the only goodies scattered around his Universal City digs: a “Silence” sign taken from the old Newman Scoring Stage adorns his desk, and two large prints of an exploded camera by photographer Todd McLellan sit in his line of sight — the latter a gift from his wife and a »

From ‘Furious 7’ to ‘Fifty Shades,’ Music Supercharges Universal Movies

17 November 2015 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

2015 was a year to remember for Universal Pictures, both at the box office and, more unusually, on the pop charts. With “Straight Outta Compton” and “Pitch Perfect 2” dominating cinemas while driving music sales all the while, the studio was responsible for the two biggest music-driven films of the year. And that harmony extended throughout the slate, with “Furious 7” and “50 Shades of Grey,” which notched three Top 10 pop hits between them.

Behind all of these projects was Mike Knobloch, Universal’s president of film music and publishing. The exec says the studio’s emphasis on music has been palpable since he came on as one of Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley’s earliest hires when she was named in 2009.

“Culturally, under Donna’s leadership, music has always been high on the food chain,” Knobloch says. “Everything from ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Les Miz’ to ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and ‘Pitch Perfect’ and music-driven non-musicals like ‘50 Shades. »

The Guild of Music Supervisors’ inaugural “State of Music in Media” conference will be held this Saturday, Sept. 19, at Emerson College Los Angeles, located in Hollywood.

Established in 2010, the young 170-member guild, whose mission statement is to “elevate the creative use of music within all forms of media,” initiated the confab to discuss the biz among professional peers.

“Our Conference creates a great opportunity for our guild members, and all of the stakeholders in the media music, to form a powerful think tank,” said John Houlihan, president of the Guild of Music Supervisors, in a statement.

The sold-out gathering (450 attendees are expected) will include a conversation with Mike Knobloch, Universal Pictures’ president of film music & publishing, moderated by Kcrw critic and host of “The Treatment,” about multi-platinum soundtracks for “Straight Outta Compton,” “50 Shades of Grey,” “Furious 7” and “Pitch Perfect 2,” among other subjects.

There will also be a discussion with the “Breaking Bad” creative team, »

Heitor Pereira Coaxes Emotion Out of Music

26 August 2015 2:21 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When Heitor Pereira was a boy growing up in rural, heavily forested Brazil, his grandfather — an avid birdwatcher — used to tell him, “Listen to the symphony of the birds and the life around us. Can you imagine a day without these melodies?”

Nowadays Pereira honors that memory within the context of moving pictures, whether mimicking nature or underscoring character and story.

“Melody is still where I start,” says the composer of such animated features as “Despicable Me” and “Minions,” and live-action films like “If I Stay” and “It’s Complicated.” “Even if it’s a birthplace for the score and then becomes textural. If I do that, I never get lost, because melodies have meaning. They are a musical conclusion of a conversation that we may have about a character.”

Pereira is among a long line of film composers — including Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer and Trent Reznor — who established themselves in the pop realm. »

Marc Streintenfeld’s Collaborators Cite Film Composer’s Ability to Burrow Into Characters

20 May 2015 12:47 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“He’s a filmmaker who has not made a film,” says director Saar Klein of composer Marc Streitenfeld. “He discusses things on a story level. He has an overall macro understanding of the film. And incredible taste.”

The two met while Klein was editing “The Thin Red Line” and Streitenfeld was assisting composer Hans Zimmer. By the time Klein was ready to make his own, “After the Fall,” Streitenfeld had begun composing on his own and Klein enlisted him while the film was still in the writing and prep stages.

“I think he really got to the soul of this man,” Klein says, referring to the lead character (Wes Bentley, as an unemployed family man who turns to crime). “There’s a lot going on inside this man who’s falling apart. The music almost illustrates the sadness, the tragedy of this man.”
