The 23rd annual Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival presents four nights of international avant-garde and experimental media from all over the world. The fest runs June 23-26 with the Opening Night festivities taking place at the Gene Siskel Film Center and the rest of the screenings held at the venerable Chicago Filmmakers, which has been behind the event for the past 11 years.

The Opening Night presentation begins with the new short film from the Brothers Quay, Maska, which was produced in Poland and based on a short story by Polish author Stanislaw Lem (Solaris). Also included in the opening screening are films by Thom Anderson, Mati Diop, Christopher Becks, Milena Gierke and more.

Nd/Nf 2011. "Summer of Goliath," "Destiny of Lesser Animals," "Gromozeka"

For Chris Cabin, writing in Slant, "Watching the near-mystical images that litter Mexican-born Nicolás Pereda's doc/narrative hybrid Summer of Goliath, it becomes far easier to pick out the innovators that have paved the way for Pereda than it is to locate the distinction between what is real and what is narratively structured. Kiarostami's translucent border between production and product can be seen everywhere; the sumptuous, often breathtaking view of nature seems clearly indebted to early Apichatpong Weerasethakul (think Mysterious Object at Noon) and, to a far lesser degree, Lisandro Alonso. Jia Zhangke surely figures in here as well, but only in theory, seeing as Pereda's film, which weaves together scattered pieces of lives lived in Huilotepec, Mexico, focuses on things more instinctual and natural on a smaller scale, rather than the forge of modernity and capitalism being played out amongst demolished factories and five-star hotels." »

Nd/Nf 2011 Review: Summer of Goliath

28 March 2011 7:00 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

The film starts with our unseen filmmaker interviewing bunch of kids in gorgeous close ups. Among them is Oscar, a handsome, sullen teenager. Everyone calls him Goliath because he is said to have killed his girlfriend. The details of Oscar's story from the testimonies are somewhat fuzzy. And so begins Summer of Goliath, a part documentary, part narrative, surveying the psycho-geography of fractured, violence ridden family lives in the small mountainous village in Mexico. It's a grittier Mexican version of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. But it lacks humor and the spirituality of the Thai film. Nicolás Pereda takes the 'poetic' way to tell these impoverished people's lives where you are forced to live side by side with your mortal enemies, who »

New Directors/New Films Selects Matt McCormick’s Debut Feature

17 February 2011 10:40 AM, PST | Bad Lit | See recent Bad Lit news »

Celebrating its 40th year of spotlighting the world’s best up-and-coming feature filmmakers, the Museum of Modern Art and Film Society of Lincoln Center’s prestigious New Directors/New Films series has chosen Portland-based experimental filmmaker Matt McCormick‘s Some Days Are Better Than Others to screen.

McCormick is hardly a “new” director. He’s been making short films and music videos since 1999. However, Some Days Are Better Than Others is his first feature-length project. The movie follows the lives of several quirky Portland residents who all experience the good times of their lives slipping quickly into memory, while their more painful moments are so difficult to let go of.

Starring in the film is Carrie Brownstein, the former guitarist and singer for the band Sleater-Kinney and current star of the hit IFC cable TV series Portlandia. Brownstein previously appeared in Miranda July’s short film Getting Stronger Every Day »
