Graduated from Utah in three years with a bachelor's degree in economics and scored a 40 on the Wonderlic Test prior to the 2005 NFL Draft. Father, Doug, played football at Weber State, where his mother, Pam, also attended. His sister played soccer at Cal State Northridge. Uncle, John L. Smith, is the head coach at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. He has also served as head coach at Arkansas (2012), Michigan State (2003-06), Louisville (1998-2002), Utah State (1995-97) and Idaho (1989-94).
