ABC had high hopes for Off the Map, their new medical drama from veteran producers of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Unfortunately things didn't go as planned and ABC has now cancelled Off the Map after one season on the air.
Off the Map follows the lives of six doctors who have "lost their way" and have traveled to a remote South American jungle to try to rediscover why they wanted to become physicians.
The TV series premiered to a disappointing 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.57 million viewers. The show won its timeslot but was disrupted in some parts of the country by coverage of the Tucson Memorial. As a result, ABC reran the premiere »
ABC's mid-season medical drama, Off the Map, recently concluded its first season on the air. The alphabet network's been looking for a new hit drama and this one was produced by veteran producers of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. How does Off the Map stack up? ABC recently unveiled a new medical drama, Off the Map, which was created by Jenna Bans and is co-executive produced by Bans, Betsy Beers, and Shondra Rimes. All three ladies have been closely involved with Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Will Off the Map be as successful as these other medical dramas or be cancelled after one season?
Off the Map follows six doctors who move to a tiny town in the South American jungle to help the residents and man an understaffed and under-stocked medical clinic. The cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
This new TV show debuted on January 12th to a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that really matters) and 7.57 million total viewers. That was the night of the President's speech in Tucson which »
Chicago – Regardless of its exotic locales, “Off the Map” may benefit from a few more diversions. Everything about this fresh-faced ABC drama feels instantly familiar. Creator and “Grey’s Anatomy” producer Jenna Bans essentially takes the “Grey’s” formula and transports it to the jungles of South America, which are considerably more “Mash”-like than McDreamy.
Of course, there aren’t many locations more inherently intense and fascinating than a medical clinic in a third world country. The best moments in the early episodes of “Map” are the ones in which the doctors come up with improvised procedures to save their patients by utilizing organic elements from their surrounding environment. If you’ve never witnessed (or heard of) a “coconut transfusion,” you will have by the end of episode one.
Television Rating: 2.0/5.0
Yet the excitement factor on “Map” is distressingly low. The endless “life or death” situations emerge like clockwork and quickly grow repetitive. »

I have a strong suspicion that ABC has a hit on their hands, but don't take that for positive regard. Off the Map is being pushed heavily as "from the producers of Grey's Anatomy," and that's about all the review anyone needs. However, that may need a little more explanation.
There is some variety among Grey's Anatomy fans, and while those who can't stand Grey's at all know exactly where they are, the fans could probably use a little more guidance. Long story short, there are those fans who think Grey's Anatomy has slowly become more and more goofy over time, reaching the point where it is mostly unwatchable now, and then there are those who think the show has gotten better and better.
For those who believe Grey's has tumbled into the realm of not only corny nonsense, but self-mockery, proceed with extreme caution here. For those in the opposing camp, »
