Shooting in Hawaii isn't all fun and games (mostly) for the cast of 'Off the Map,' as we found out when they sat down for our Outside the Box interview show.
Rachelle Lefevre, Martin Henderson, Jason George, Valerie Cruz, Zach Gilford, Mamie Gummer revealed that and Jonathan Castellanos when the script calls for it, they are conscripted to perform their own stunts ranging from swimming in a "disease-infested" river to throwing themselves in front of a moving car ... going 2 miles an hour!
So, reality doesn't much compare to the hardships the characters endure on the show, which features doctors working in the remote jungles of South America. Still, at least one cast member professed to be squeamish about blood, and on a medical drama, blood can't be avoided.

ABC recently unveiled a new medical drama, Off the Map, which was created by Jenna Bans and is co-executive produced by Bans, Betsy Beers, and Shondra Rimes. All three ladies have been closely involved with Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Will Off the Map be as successful as these other medical dramas or be cancelled after one season?
Off the Map follows six doctors who move to a tiny town in the South American jungle to help the residents and man an understaffed and under-stocked medical clinic. The cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
This new TV show debuted on January 12th to a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that really matters) and 7.57 million total viewers. That was the night of the President's speech in Tucson which »

With a big festival happening, the doctors set out to treat a mudslide victim, his pregnant wife and soon to be baby, and an electrocution victim who wiped out power to the whole village. Lily (Caroline Dhavernas), Ben (Martin Henderson), Tommy (Zach Gilford), and Ryan (Rachelle Lefevre) race off to the scene of a car accident, arriving in time to see the mudslide landing a man, Roberto, under a tree. Lily and Ben take the man’s pregnant wife, Sydney, to the clinic while Ryan and Tommy attempt to care for her husband.
Sydney is deep in labor but constantly looking for her husband. Ryan and Tommy lever the tree off of Roberto, causing massive hemorrhage. They attempt to bring him into the clinic, but since the medical truck has fallen off the road, they have to carry him on foot. Meanwhile, Ben explain to Roberto’s wife that he is on the way, »

Chicago – Regardless of its exotic locales, “Off the Map” may benefit from a few more diversions. Everything about this fresh-faced ABC drama feels instantly familiar. Creator and “Grey’s Anatomy” producer Jenna Bans essentially takes the “Grey’s” formula and transports it to the jungles of South America, which are considerably more “Mash”-like than McDreamy.
Of course, there aren’t many locations more inherently intense and fascinating than a medical clinic in a third world country. The best moments in the early episodes of “Map” are the ones in which the doctors come up with improvised procedures to save their patients by utilizing organic elements from their surrounding environment. If you’ve never witnessed (or heard of) a “coconut transfusion,” you will have by the end of episode one.
Television Rating: 2.0/5.0
Yet the excitement factor on “Map” is distressingly low. The endless “life or death” situations emerge like clockwork and quickly grow repetitive. »

I have a strong suspicion that ABC has a hit on their hands, but don't take that for positive regard. Off the Map is being pushed heavily as "from the producers of Grey's Anatomy," and that's about all the review anyone needs. However, that may need a little more explanation.
There is some variety among Grey's Anatomy fans, and while those who can't stand Grey's at all know exactly where they are, the fans could probably use a little more guidance. Long story short, there are those fans who think Grey's Anatomy has slowly become more and more goofy over time, reaching the point where it is mostly unwatchable now, and then there are those who think the show has gotten better and better.
For those who believe Grey's has tumbled into the realm of not only corny nonsense, but self-mockery, proceed with extreme caution here. For those in the opposing camp, »

'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Private Practice' have been blockbuster hits for executive producer Shonda Rhimes, but she isn't stopping there. She has teamed up with creator Jenna Bans for a new series about doctors, 'Off the Map,' which premieres Wed., Jan 12 at 10Pm Et on ABC.
Unlike Rhimes' other hits, 'Off the Map' is set in the wild, remote South American jungle. A trio of young, idealistic doctors (all running from their pasts, of course) arrive to work at an understaffed, underfunded clinic.
We're sitting down with the cast -- Zach Gilford, Mamie Gummer, Rachelle Lefevre, Jason George, Martin Henderson, Valerie Cruz and Jonathan Castellanos -- and asking Your questionsabout ABC's new hot doc show.
