Why the 'Gotham' recast of Poison Ivy is the creepiest thing ever - She Said/She Said

23 September 2016 2:59 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

She Said/She Said is a (sporadically) daily video featuring HitFix Harpy Donna Dickens and HitFix Weekend Editor Jill Pantozzi discussing current events in geek news. ******************* This past Monday, Gotham premiered its third season on Fox. “Better To Reign In Hell” set up the this year’s premise which seems to be “Why can’t we hold all these villains?” as the Indian Hill escapees are still on the loose. It was also the last time (probably) that will see Clare Foley’s version of Ivy Pepper, as her character took an unexpected dip. Based on the behind-the-scenes featurette put out by Fox, we won’t have to wonder about Ivy’s fate for long. But in case you haven’t been keeping up with the intricacies of Gotham casting, Foley has been outed as Ivy in favor of actress Maggie Geha. The idea was Poison Ivy is supposed to »

Gotham's Ivy Is (Literally) Bigger and Badder Than Ever — Watch Out, Selina!

23 September 2016 9:53 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Thanks to an unexpected blast of Marv’s Miracle-Gro touch, Gotham‘s Ivy Pepper will have grown like a weed when next we see her in Monday’s episode (Fox, 8/7c).

And the changes to the street rat aren’t merely physical. “She’s obviously aged physically, but she’s also changed on the inside,” says Maggie Geha, who has taken over the role from Clare Foley. Having blossomed into a young woman, “She definitely has a new confidence to her. The transformation brings out a bit of her manipulative side — and some evil.”

New Gotham Featurette Puts New Poison Ivy Front And Center!

23 September 2016 6:21 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Much has been made about the drastic changes made to the character Ivy Pepper in Fox's Gotham. The writers and producers just made the decision to age her up from an adolescent teen to a fully grown woman and, as such, have recast her, and they've also added more comic book elements to the character. While she began her life on Gotham as Ivy Pepper, a youthful reimagining of the classic villain, the show runners have now decided to turn her into full-on Poison Ivy for this third season.

A new featurette from Gotham shows off the transformation, and gives us some idea of what we can expect. You'll see that at the start of the video she's played by Clare Foley and by the end it's Maggie Geha inhabiting the role.

New Gotham Season 3 Featurette Spotlights Maggie Geha's "Reborn" Ivy Pepper/Poison Ivy

23 September 2016 5:09 AM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

The season 3 premiere of Gotham saw Ivy Pepper (Clare Foley) go for a little dip, and the character is set to return to the city during next week's installment looking very different. Ivy's body may have aged, but is she still the same shy teenager inside? Well, yes and no:  “Little Ivy has been changed, she’s been morphed into big Ivy via one of Professor Strange’s monster creations," actress Maggie Geha explains in the video below. "Ivy doesn’t really know what happened to her; she doesn’t even really know if it’s a dream, but she likes it." Tune in to see Miss Pepper continue her slightly creepy journey to becoming the villainous Poison Ivy next Monday. New Gotham Featurette Discusses Poison Ivy’s Transformation

22 September 2016 9:57 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Without a doubt, one of the most discussed aspects of the third season of Gotham has to be that of the Poison Ivy switch. I’m well aware that some viewers are confused as to the specifics of the change, but it’s actually quite simple to explain: The young Ivy we have come to know (Clare Foley) has been aged several years due to the touch of an Indian Hill “monster” who acts as a sort of reverse fountain of youth. Thus, we are introduced to an adult Ivy played by the up and coming Maggie Geha.

Thankfully, Fox has released a featurette that further explores this new dynamic, as several members of the cast and crew discuss what we can expect from one of Gotham City’s deadliest femme fatales. Geha herself lent some insight with the following statement:

“Little Ivy has been changed, she’s been morphed »

Gotham executive producer explains why they recast Poison Ivy

21 September 2016 12:11 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Back in June, Fox announced that it was recasting the role of Ivy Pepper / Poison Ivy for the third season of Gotham, with Maggie Geha (Ted 2) taking over the role played by Clare Foley in the first two seasons.

In the show, Ivy will undergo her sudden aging thanks to one of Hugo Strange’s monstrous creations (which we’ll see in Monday’s upcoming second episode ‘Burn the Witch’ – check out a promo here). In an interview with THR, executive producer Ken Woodruff has revealed the behind-the-scenes reason for the change, as they wanted to bring in a more mature and seductive version of the character.

“We made the change for two reasons,” said Woodruff. “The character Ivy in the comics, one of her greatest powers is the power of seduction. Everyone was much more comfortable with that with an older actress as opposed to a teenager. We want to explore that classic, »

Gotham Ep Explains The Introduction Of An Older Poison Ivy

20 September 2016 5:17 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Fox’s Batman prequel series, Gotham, has gradually become more and more fantasy-based as it’s moved towards its third season, introducing various characters and storylines which draw influence from the superpower-infused DC comic books. Arguably the most out-there season 3 addition is a more mature incarnation of Poison Ivy (Maggie Geha), who will replace Clare Foley’s younger “Ivy Pepper.”

In a recent interview with THR, producer Ken Woodruff explains the decision to reintroduce the more comic-accurate take on Ivy to the show:

The character Ivy in the comics, one of her greatest powers is the power of seduction. Everyone was much more comfortable with that with an older actress as opposed to a teenager. We want to explore that classic, canonical power of Ivy. And we didn’t just make her older with that attack. When she’s changed and transformed, there’s a real character change as well. »

Gotham Producers Aged Poison Ivy So That She Could Be Sexy

20 September 2016 6:25 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

In an interesting twist for fans of Fox's Gotham, Ivy Pepper has undergone a transformation for the show's third season. For starters, she's no longer played by 14-year-old Clare Foley. The part has been taken over by Maggie Geha, who's 28. Aside from that, she's also had something of an attitude adjustment. While the physical transformation is more obvious, Gotham's producers have shed some light on one of the more tactical and strategic reasons that they decided to change things up for Ivy.

Clare Foley

In storyline terms, Ivy was touched by one of Fish Mooney's (Jada Pinkett Smith) monsters and that caused her to transform. But behind the scenes it sounds like the producers wanted to make the change so that they could take advantage of one of Poison Ivy's most potent weapons from the comics: Seduction.

According To Gotham Season 3 Premiere Synopsis, It’s “Better To Reign In Hell”

1 September 2016 2:28 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

With less than three weeks to go until Gotham begins its third season, vital details continue to pour in. The latest comes in the form of the premiere episode’s synopsis that also divulges its foreboding title: “Mad City: Better to Reign in Hell…”

Aside from sharing that name with a great song by Cradle of Filth, fans of classic literature will recognize it from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, with the full quote being, “Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.” Seeing as how villains will continue to run roughshod over the city until a certain Caped Crusader lays claim to the night, that title seems consistent with recent news regarding the upcoming season’s tone.

Something interesting to note in the synopsis is the absence of Maggie Geha as the aged up Poison Ivy. Clare Foley is the only one listed to be playing that character, »

First look at new Poison Ivy actress confirms 'Gotham' made a huge mistake

9 August 2016 10:37 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Gotham is a bit of an odd duck in the Dceu. The show is situated on Fox, isolating it from the larger ‘Arrow-verse’ on The CW. This isn’t a bad thing, as one of the joys of DC not interconnecting their film and television universes opens the door to a varied multiverse experience. But even within the microcosm that is Gotham, some odd choices have been made. Choosing to hew closely to Bat-lore is fine, but when that makes Bruce Wayne a high school freshman and a majority of his future foes already adults, it feels wonky. The only future members of the rogues’ gallery on Gotham the same age as our larval-stage Batman were Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) and Ivy Pepper (Clare Foley). But now even Ivy is leaving childhood in the dust. For Season 3 of Gotham, Poison Ivy has been recast. The new actress, Maggie Geha, is »

Did 'Gotham' Just Cast an Adult Poison Ivy to Seduce 15-Year-Old Bruce Wayne?

22 June 2016 10:59 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

We reported on the controversial recasting of Gotham's Poison Ivy in which young actor Clare Foley was set to be replaced by someone older in order to let Ivy's canonical sexuality take a place on the show. Maggie Geha, who's had small roles on 30 Rock and in Ted 2, has just been cast in that role. When the news broke, some were holding out for an all-new Poison Ivy considering the character on the show is known as Ivy Pepper and not the DC Comics character name of Pamela Isley, but that's not the case. Geha will be taking over the role completely from Foley in Season 3. Zap2It.com has a description of her "transformation" from Fox: Following an encounter with a monster from Indian Hill, Ivy Pepper finds herself reborn, and one step closer to the DC villain she is destined to become: Poison Ivy.
