The Cold Light Of Day DVD Review

8 September 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Mabrouk El Mechri

Starring: Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver

Running time: 93 minutes

Certificate: 12A

Following the announcement that Henry Cavill had claimed the title role in the Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man Of Steel, it was clear that The Cold Light Of Day was Hollywood’s attempt to cement Cavill as The Next Big Thing. Unfortunately, Cavill is a man as wooden as he is handsome.

The Cold Light Of Day is a paint-by-numbers thriller from little known director Mabrouk El Mechri (Jcvd). The lightweight plot is desperately stretched over the longest 93 minutes you’re likely to endure for some time, and action veterans Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver serve up lukewarm performances while they wait patiently for their cheques to clear.

After his family are kidnapped while holidaying in Spain, young entrepreneur Will Shaw (Cavill) is confronted by those responsible and tasked with recovering a stolen briefcase in 48 hours. »

Henry Cavill: Hero in training

5 September 2012 3:05 PM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Henry Cavill took a break between the heroic roles of Theseus and Superman to play an everyday guy in The Cold Light of Day. Perhaps unavoidably, though, the English actor's part in the suspense film turned into quite a display of derring-do.

"Cold Light of Day is an action thriller about different international secret services," says the heroically handsome actor during an interview in Beverly Hills. "They're trying to attain a briefcase and I get stuck in the middle of it. I'm an average, regular Joe who has to do extraordinary things to survive, perform death-defying manoeuvres and risky stunts to save my family. One of the secret agents is using my family as a way of getting what they want."

Cavill's character, Will Shaw, is vacationing with relatives in Spain when his mother and brother are kidnapped. He soon learns that his father (Bruce Willis), who he thought worked »

The Cold Light of Day (2012) Movie Review

4 September 2012 8:02 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Shot in 2010 and delayed until 2012, with a trailer finally surfacing earlier this year (and very little fanfare since), Mabrouk El Mechri’s action thriller “The Cold Light of Day” is finally getting a limited theatrical release this Friday. You can see why it took so long for the film to, ahem, see the light of day despite an A-list cast that includes Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis, and Sigourney Weaver. Fact is, while it’s not a terrible movie, it’s just not a very good one, either. There’s a lot of action, gunplay, a hell of a lot of chases, and exotic Spanish locales. Still, you can never fully shake the feeling that “The Cold Light of Day” is a direct-to-dvd B-action movie masquerading as a slick Hollywood production. Things kick off with Cavill, playing young entrepreneur Will Shaw, arriving in Spain for a week of relaxation with the family. »

[Review] The Cold Light of Day

9 April 2012 8:30 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Since the first trailer hit, The Cold Light of Day has looked like the kind of thriller one wants to sit back with and have some easy fun for 90 minutes or so, without being challenged. Unfortunately, Mabrouk El Mechri’s follow-up to the acclaimed Jcvd is much too predictable and generic for it to work as a successful piece of popcorn entertainment and even the lean running time feels overextended for this story.

What little there is follows Will Shaw (Henry Cavill, delivering an impeccable American accent), a young business consultant who takes a vacation somewhere along the coast of Spain on his family’s boat. He meets his father, Martin Shaw (Bruce Willis), at the airport and they go to meet the rest of the family on the boat. After an overlong introduction of laughably bad dialogue, which was presumably intended to make one associate with the characters, the »

The Cold Light Of Day Review

7 April 2012 2:58 AM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Coming off ever so slightly like a reverse Taken, if Liam Neeson was kidnapped and the daughter had to rescue him, The Cold Light Of Day stars Henry Cavill as Will Shaw, a young wall street trader whose family is kidnapped while on holiday in Spain. While he tries to uncover what happened to them, he discovers his dad, Martin (Bruce Willis), is a C.I.A. agent who is in possession of a brief case a lot of people want. Teaming up with Lucia (Veronica Echegui), Will sets out to find both his family and the briefcase before it's too late. Now, I find it hard to call this an out and out bad film, but there is something 'meh' about the whole affair. It starts off well enough, a leisurely pace introduces us to Will and his family, easing us into the story nicely. There is also an »

The Cold Light of Day Review: Bruce Willis’ Worst Film Yet?

6 April 2012 1:11 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars

Little more than a week will go by without you hearing pundits bemoaning a film that wasn’t screened for critics. Studio PRs might tell you it amounts to little more than embittered reviewers venting about having to pay out of their own pocket to see a new release, but more often than not, it indicates a film that the studio is not happy with, and one which they know will be sunk by negative reviews prior to release. The Cold Light of Day, a shockingly inept thriller from Mabrouk El Mechri – whose last film, Jcvd, was one of 2008’s big surprises – is little more than a showcase for our new Man of Steel, Henry Cavill, and a pretty terrible one at that.

If there’s one thing that Mechri’s film conveys well, it is Cavill’s physical prowess and chiseled good looks. He looks good running around shooting people, »

Two New Action-Fuelled Clips from The Cold Light of Day with Henry Cavill and Bruce Willis

30 March 2012 5:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

After getting eight new images and a new clip from action-thriller The Cold Light of Day yesterday, Entertainment One UK have sent over two fast-paced action-fuelled clips for us to share with you showcasing Henry Cavill’s brute strength and resourcefulness in the lead.

We last saw Cavill in Tarsem Singh’s Immortals, which took more than $200m. at the international box office, and with The Cold Light of Day and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel as the actor’s next two leading roles, he’s clearly cementing himself as a rising action star/hero.

Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver star alongside Cavill, with Mabrouk El Mechri taking the helm, directing from a script co-written by Scott Wiper and John Petro.

Armed with a gun, but no information, distraught, confused and alone in an unfamiliar city, Will (Henry Cavill) is »

Vinessa Shaw Takes ‘The Bitter Pill’ for Steven Soderbergh

27 March 2012 4:17 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After so much Steven Soderbergh talk revolved around The Hunger Games — a movie he’s barely involved in, no less — it’s rather nice to have another true project moving along. On this note, Deadline reports that his final theatrical film (for the next five years or so), The Bitter Pill, has found another cast member — and a Jeff Wells favorite.

I’m obviously referring to Vinessa Shaw (Two Lovers, 3:10 to Yuma), who’s been thrown into the mix with Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Channing Tatum, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The extent of Shaw‘s role is tough to gauge from its initial description — “the wife of Law’s character” — though we could at least make a stab as to what may be happening with her.

After all, Scott Z. Burns‘ script for The Bitter Pill centers on a young woman, Elizabeth Hawkins (Mara), who begins to have paranoid delusions »
