Voice Student SuccessesI was the Voice Teacher for JORDIN SPARKS - American Idol for 2007. A quote from her official site as well as many other sites: "A formally trained singer, she started taking lessons at age 14 from vocal coach Melissa Black. She rigorously trained with her coach for almost a year, in order to perfect her skill." My students have gone on to star in Soap Operas, T.V. Shows, Movies, Broadway Productions,etc... I was also the pianist for Mary Hart (Entertainment Tonight) when she would perform and sing. I was also the pianist for Kristin Chenowith! Currently in my studio - i have several outstanding young singers who walked the "red carpet" in Hollywood at the Kodak Theater in August 2008 for the "best new talent awards." Jill Arnoso is quickly advancing into the world of country music with her powerful voice and her ability on the piano - which i have taught her both. She recently returned from her second trip to Nashville - where she met with Rebecca Lynn Howard as well as agents and managers for Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. She also worked in the studio with the guys of LONE STAR(!) and what an experience! An example of her singing abilities can be found on you tube. (Jill G Marie). I also have many other students who are quickly advancing in the fields of singing, acting and modeling. One of my former clients - Bree Hutchinson (singer with Tanya Tucker and actress on Walker,Texas Ranger) won the title of IDOL IN THE SKYE (season one)!! For the second season of IDOL IN THE SKYE - several of my students advanced to the semi-finals including Sarah Ambrose - 14 years old AND a finalist in season one of Idol in the Skye. Sarah has the most beautiful voice and is well on her way to a HUGE career in music. For season 3 of Idol in the Skye - three of my students advanced to the finals! It is now SEASON FOUR of IDOL IN THE SKYE and i have 16 of my top females in the competition this summer and so far - two have won their night. Congratulations to all of my singers who are excelling in the field of music - including Athena Creese - 9 years old!! - who recently sang at the Los Angeles lakers game AND performed at a charity event for the Jonas Brothers and Jordin Sparks. CONGRATS!!! VERY EXCITING NEWS!!! The Phoenix Symphony is proud to announce that International Opera star Cheri Rose Katz, Los Angeles Music Producer Marylata E. Jacob and Miss Arizona 2008 Erin Nurss joined Virginia G. Piper Music Director Michael Christie and Phoenix-local vocalist Dennis Rowland ( judges for the "Call for Christine" contest") in selecting my vocal student - SARAH AMBROSE (14 years old!!!) as the winner in yesterdays finals. "Call for Christine" was a vocal competition during which contestants throughout Arizona auditioned for a chance to sing "All I Ask of You" in the role of Christine from Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. Sarah will perform alongside Franc D' Ambrosio at the Symphony's New Year's Eve Gala held at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa. Franc D' Ambrosio earned the title "The World's Longest Running Phantom" after playing the role nearly 3,000 times. He starred in a national tour and in San Francisco for five years. GOOD LUCK SARAH AND CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! IN July of 2009 - Sarah Ambrose won her division of HOT PIPES!!!! CONGRATS!! BIG NEWS FOR ALL YOUNG TEENS OUT THERE!!!!! Jonnie and Brookie Allen are former clients of mine and they are THE OFFICIAL WINNERS OF RADIO DISNEY'S NEXT BIG STAR! Season four of IDOL IN THE SKYE is now complete and FOUR of my best and brightest young female singers made it to the finals and several made it thru to the semi's. CONGRATS! Special Musical Talents/VOCAL PRODUCER INFO/I am a working musician who plays and sings all types of music by ear. I also have perfect pitch and have the ability to transpose on sight - which makes me in demand for session work as a pianist. Not only am i in demand for recording sessions as a pianist - but i coach the singers on their vocal technique as well. I am an excellent arranger of all types of music and have a proven record of not only getting the job done - but done well and fast. I am in great demand as a pianist for parties and receptions. I do play and sing all types of music - however my speciality is pop, rock, country and the classic standards. I play music by ear by such artists as Miley Cyrus (MY PERSONAL FAVORITE!!!), Lady Gaga, Cher, Celine Dion, Leona Lewis, Charise P., Paramore, Pat Benetar, Kelly Clarkson, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Poisen, Motley Crue, Guns and Roses, Alice Cooper, Pink, Evanessence, Aly and A.J., Michelle Branch, Whitney Houston, Heart, Melissa Etheridge, Mariah Carey, Josh Groban, Carrie Underwood, Martina Mcbride, Taylor Swift, Trisha Yearwood, Sara Evans, Terri Clark, Leann Rimes, Jessica Andrews, The Dixie Chicks, Sugarland, just to name a few. When students come into my studio to study rock, pop and country music - they never have to bring anything but themselves! I do everything by ear and if it has been on the radio or i have seen the music video,etc.. - i know it - all i need - and i have tons - are the lyric sheets and therefore no student has ever had to buy music or bring their own pianist. I am what you would call a CONTEMPORARY VOCAL INSTRUCTOR - in other words - i SPECIALIZE in rock,pop,country,r&b,etc... as well as broadway. I am also a VOCAL PRODUCER. My skills as a vocal producer have led to jobs in recording studios to participate as a vocal producer and vocal coach on master recording sessions. Not only have i used my musical talents to enhance my own career, but i have helped many national artists in their endeavors as well. In recording sessions - often times the ENGINEER does have extensive knowledge of a VOCAL COACH - but most do not - it is not what they are trained to do. As a singer AND pianist - i come into the studio and work with not only the major artists - but the backup singers as well. Studio of Arizona's premiere Vocal Coach,Master Voice Teacher and Performance CoachMelissa Black is by far one of the most professionally renowned singing coaches and vocal trainers in Arizona and is well-known in other parts of the U.S. Not only is she a voice teacher and vocal coach - but Melissa is an accomplished pianist as well - specializing in pop, rock, country and broadway. Melissa plays by ear, does on-sight transpositions of all of your favorite songs and acts as a mentor and a promotor. Her personality is one of the most up-beat that any student could ever hope to find and be around. Her studio is one that any student - parents too! - will want to come to each week and be a part of for years to come. "A voice that sounds like one register! This is what I am able to do for singers - all ages and all styles. And you get that sound live, outside of all the engineering tools used in a recording studio! I teache the skills needed to bridge your voice (all registers) and help you get the sound you desire in whichever style you choose. What is done in my studio starting with the first lesson is learning the technique of SINGING IN THE MASK and the use of SINGING ON THE BREATH - or "singing on the yawn." Breathing "below the belt" and breathing "from the floor" - in other words - using the ENTIRE BODY for singing and breathing - not just the upper body - which creates stress and tension on the vocal chords." The studio of Melissa Black is primarily a vocal teaching studio that specializes in teaching female voices - Melissa trains young voices to prepare for a career in rock,pop,country,r&b,broadway,etc... HOWEVER - there are circumstances where males are more than welcome to train with Melissa on a semi-regular basis - those being preparing for auditions for Idol and/or other comparable competiions, getting ready to make a CD in a recording studio, getting a rock or country band formed and needing vocal coaching on that particular kind of repetoire, etc... Melissa also plays ALL KINDS of music and is available as a pianist for female singers as well as males. Melissa had an extensive male client list when teaching in Oklahoma City. The rates in this studio are FANTASTIC also! I charge 30 dollars for one lesson a week AND the great thing is - since i am the pianist/vocal coach for the lesson as well as the voice teacher of technique and repetoire - there is no need for the extra cost of a pianist for the lesson - AND since i also do group lessons - you may add on a friend to your lesson and that not only is fun for kids and teens - but much cheaper on parents! Music by Melissa is also a recording studio equiped with sound system and cd recorder to record your lessons,etc... onto a cd. NO OTHER STUDIO IN PHOENIX offers such diverse training for all singers! In other studios - you have to provide your own pianist - NOT HERE - i AM the pianist/coach and teacher of technique. In other studios - you HAVE to sing classical - NOT HERE - in this studio - you sing ALL TYPES of music all selected by YOU - the student. Anyone wanting the title of American Idol, Arizona Idol,etc... - needs to be in this studio. HobbiesMy hobbies include visiting Los Angeles as often as i can with my husband and my beautiful pekingese - dusty. We enjoy going to the live t.v. tapings of JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE as well as live studio tapings of TWO AND A HALF MEN, ACCORDING TO JIM and many others. When EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND was in production - we went quite often to that t.v. show studio live taping as well as JUST SHOOT ME and JOEY. Promotor for my singers!Melissa Black not only is THE best vocal coach to have - but she also promotes her singers and helps nurture their careers and helps to get them singing gigs. There are many performing opportunities in the Phoenix area - and it is the job of the teacher/coach to see that singers are OUT THERE performing and beginning their singing careers! Melissa has provided many opportunities for not only her singers - but others as well. In order for ANY teacher/coach to help their students - they have to have connections within the music industry - and Melissa Black is the person to have as your coach - not only to begin your studies with - but throughout your entire career as a mentor. NO OTHER VOICE TEACHER has Melissa's positive attitude and expert piano skills! Songwriter - Member - ASCAPA musician, professional pianist, professional vocalist in several genre's of music, composer, vocal coach, master voice teacher, mentor and promotor for her voice students, songwriter and arranger, Melissa is highly educated with a Bachelors Degree in Vocal Performance and Vocal Music Eductation as well as a Masters Degree in Vocal Music Education. Melissa is the Owner/Operator of her own city-licensed music studio - Music by Melissa. Currently, Melissa is looking for distribution of her original songs - either a one-song (or more) deal or her entire catalog. Being a staff writer for a music label and/or a music publishing company is her immediate goal. The best thing about her writing is - she does both the music and the lyrics and is the singer on all of her demo's. She has never done "colaboration" with any other singer or writer. She realizes though that she is not a country singer - she is a "classical-crossover" singer and since so far all of her original material is country music - her goal is to have an actual country singer record her material. At the present time - Melissa is marketing herself mainly as a SONGWRITER. Her writing so far has been country - but Melissa hopes to branch out into other genre's of music - hopefully someday to write for films and television. Melissa is able to write both the music and lyrics for ALL genre's of music, including Pop, R&B, Classical, Country and Adult-Contemporary. At the present time - Melissa has a total of 14 copyrighted songs in the country music genre in her ASCAP Catalog. All are listed under her legal name - MELISSA J. BLACK-ENGLE and all songs are in the US COPYRIGHT REGISTRY as well. Melissa is able to write for today's country artists, pop sensations, adult-contemporary artists such as Celine Dion,etc... as well as for films and television. "As far as my songwriting goes - the first thing that comes to my mind is an identifiable theme, something listeners can relate to. A songwriter needs to develop a catchy "hook" and have a title that catches the listeners ears. I have always said; "set your hook fast and often". Lyrics have got to be good since they are "king" in Nashville. And you better have a great chorus because the chorus delivers the main message of the song. I always write my chorus' first - then the bridge - then i go back and start at the beginning. Also - i have always had excellent rhythm and as a songwriter - its very important to keep the rhythm consistent from verse line to verse line. You also have to have form this is simply the way a song is structured; you cannot have unmatched verses. (if you rhyme lines 1 & 3 in the first verse, do it in the second as well). It has been very important to me as a writer to "wear all of the hats." I am the singer - the composer of the music - the writer of the words - the pianist in all of my demos - and all of my demos are recorded simutaniously - in other words - recorded at the same time - no laying tracks. The demos are done in my home studio on a Yamaha Clavinova and all recordings are produced on a USB Jump Drive." What is a common mistake made by new songwriters? "The most common is when someone relies on people other than themselves. The greatest success stories are about songwriters who have a burning desire within themselves, who are looking for people to come along with them instead of using others as crutches, be they managers, lawyers, publishers, or record companies. A successful songwriter has to have a certain energy, self-reliance and confidence that they can convey to their team. If they get lazy and dont take responsibility, its kind of over. You can have some success that way, but youll never realize your full potential. Plus youre working with a team of people; nobodys a magician, and nobodys perfect. You have to have interpersonal skills that can get those people excited to work with and for you; otherwise theyre going to be sitting across the desk listening to some bad songs and wondering why they came into work that day." Melissa Black is by far one of the most professionally renowned singing coaches and vocal trainers in Arizona and is well-known in other parts of the U.S. Not only is she a voice teacher and vocal coach - but Melissa is an accomplished pianist as well - specializing in pop, rock, country and adult contemporary. Melissa has been hailed by music executives as one of THE TOP female pianists. Melissa plays by ear, does on-sight transpositions of all of your favorite songs and acts as a mentor and a promotor. Her personality is one of the most up-beat that any student could ever hope to find and be around. At the present time - Melissa is the owner/operator of her own licensed music studio - MUSIC BY MELISSA and specializes in training the female voice. Melissa has had many successful young females in her studio including former American Idol winner - Jordin Sparks. With Melissa - you get the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS - a voice teacher who builds voices and is a master of technique AND you get a vocal coach - someone who is knows ALL styles of music AND can play them expertly on the piano. Melissa is available for working directly with major and independent record labels, record producers and film directors for anything related to the music industry. Vocal ArrangerI have helped launch many careers as a vocal coach and vocal arranger. I have been a singer and a professional pianist most of my life as well as a teacher and mentor for hundreds of female singers. An arranger has got to be able to be not only an incredible musician and site reader - but it does help to be able to do what i do - ON SIGHT TRANSPOSITIONS. I am able to take a piece of music - pop,country,etc... - and not only play it by ear (or read a piece of music) - but play it in any key that is needed. Also - when a student is singing a particular piece of music - i can help them take that song and "make it their own." Singers out there - MAKE SURE your coach can do ALL of these things. Often times - a singer must hire a coach AND a voice teacher; one to teach technique and the other to coach the repetiore; I DO IT ALL! Come see me! Classical-Crossover Singer/Pianist!I am a highly-trained lyric soprano with advanced College Degrees in all areas of Music - including a MASTERS DEGREE. But i LOVE singing and playing all types of music -pop,country,rock,etc... - But i especially love singing and playing country music. Here are a few examples of my country music!! PLEASE subscribe to my official YOUTUBE CHANNEL - MISSYJB00. TECHNIQUE: CLASSICAL VS CONTEMPORARY SINGINGA voice that sounds like one register! This is what I am able to do for singers - all ages and all styles. I teach the skills needed to bridge your voice and help you get the sound you desire in whichever style you choose. What is done in my studio starting with the first lesson is learning the technique of SINGING IN THE MASK and the use of SINGING ON THE BREATH - or "singing on the yawn." Breathing "below the belt" and breathing "from the floor" - in other words - using the ENTIRE BODY for singing and breathing - not just the upper body - which creates stress and tension on the vocal chords. You may be familiar with a spot in your voice where everything seems to come apart. At this point, your voice tries to push higher, but all of a sudden, you loose all power and your tone quality completely changes. This point in the voice is known as, the break or "the bridge". To sing magnificent high notes, you need to learn to sing through the break in a smooth way, and connect with your voice on the other side. When you do this correctly, its called singing through your bridge. Music by Melissa is for the most part and ALL-FEMALE studio but there are special occasions in which males are more than welcome! Lets talk a minute about SMOOTHING OUT THE BRIDGES. When you sing in the mask - there are virtually no registers in the voice. There is no chest, middle or head voice. Breaks disappear instantly when singing through the mask. The tone production is round and resonant and has a pleasant forward tone that is velvety. The classical singer wishing to do "popera" will know how to mix and blend the voice for musical theater and pop singing - maybe even country. There are some voices that naturally have a good placement. Eventually though, without a good technique they run into problems and have to have their voice "re-built" from scratch. My students hear me say all the time sing thru the consonants and the vowels. MUSCLE COORDINATION is what should happen (if youre singing correctly) when you sing through your bridge. When your vocal chords shorten for the first time (singing through your first bridge), you move into a new vocal register called your mixed voice. If you can learn how to sing high notes in your mixed voice, you will be able to get power, great tone, and clarity on your highest notes. The biggest thing that stops most singers from finding their upper vocal range is this: They use too much air when they go for their higher notes. You need less air. You use less air to sing high notes. What you need to do, is allow your voice to let go as you sing higher. When you do this correctly, it will actually feel like your voice has lifted into your head. Singing and speaking from the mask makes the voice as easy to use as humming. Any note from lowest bass to the highest soprano notes can be sung by using the idea of the mask. This method of singing eliminates registers and breaks. Like I mentioned earlier - they simply do not exist when you sing in the mask. Like I tell my students the audience needs to hear three things forward consonants, rounded vowels and final consonants. When you watch a great singer and their voice seems to have no ceiling, it comes out effortlessly and the voice seem to resonate forward behind the nose eyes and upper pallet, that is the use of the mask. When the voice isn't placed in the mask and in lower tones they would call that chest voice. When the voice isn't placed strongly in the mask and high notes are sung they call that pure head voice. However, when a voice is placed within the mask all notes sung, from lowest to highest have a pleasing resonant, forward quality to them. This is the earmark of, "commercial," sounding voices and great singing in general. Breaks and bridges are produced by inferior singing methods such as singing from the diaphragm or using the registration method. In the registration method singers think of the voice in terms of head and chest voice and then think they have to mix those two registers into a middle voice to sound commercial. I've perfected techniques that eliminate all breaks and registers. Some aspiring singers want to be like their favorite diva type singers, that is, sing with high pressure. More often than not, they don't understand the difference between high pressure singing and using an excess of force which ruins the voice. Most students of voice who aspire to powerful singing, think singing is about muscle and the ability to force out a lot of air. This approach leads to voices that sound forced and have limited ranges and in extreme cases, vocal organs ruined for singing.(Then you have to go get scoped at the ENT). Almost all untrained singers have a very noticeable break in between chest voice and head voice. Usually, they will sing in all chest and push or just skip to head voice to avoid the break. Pushing that chest voice up hurts your voice and sounds bad, and singing all in head voice is weak. By learning to bridge the gap, you gain access to a mixed voice that has resonant, harmonic qualities of both. A common misconception is that you can work on just hitting high notes and every note under that will be easy to hit and have nice quality of tone. If you do this at best you will be able to hit some high notes and that's it. At the worst you will tire out your voice very quickly and lose it. A singer needs to work their entire range. So, if you only want to sing low because you like certain artists that perform in that range- still work on your high end it will make your low end that much better!! Want POWERFUL high notes??? - Learning the art of "The Mask" makes singing high powerful notes a breeze. SINGING SCALES CLASSICAL VS. POP SINGING All singers need to develop proper breath management, but classical singers need more development. Because this classification of singer needs more vocal amplification (louder than a regular singer) they need more energy in their sound and in some cases brighter resonance to be heard. Whether it is with a piano or an orchestra, classical singers don't "swallow microphones" like other singers need to do in order to be heard. I personally was trained to fill an entire auditorium without the use of any amplification - no mike - ever. Classical singing takes longer to develop. You don't become a wonderfully sounding classical singer in a year. It takes time. On the other hand - classical singers sometimes have longer careers because of their strong technique and education on how the voice connects to the body. However, most of them never receive star status as a pop or country singer would. We as an audience look for so much more in a singer in the pop music world anyway; looks,attitude,etc...No matter what kind of singer you want to become, the best way to get your vocals into shape is through quality singing instruction and you have to practice - then you will be ready when your big chance comes. Performer of my own ORIGINAL country music! As far as my songwriting goes - the first thing that comes to my mind is an identifiable theme, something listeners can relate to. My chorus have a catchy "hook" and have titles that catches the listeners ears. (They deliver the main message of the song) I have always said; "set your hook fast and often". Lyrics have got to be good since they are "king" in Nashville. I always write my chorus' first - then the bridge - then i go back and start at the beginning. Also - i have always had excellent rhythm and as a songwriter - its very important to keep the rhythm consistent from verse line to verse line. My songs are structured well with no unmatched verses. It has been very important to me as a writer to "wear all of the hats." I am the singer - the composer of the music - the writer of the words - the pianist in all of my demos - and all of my demos are recorded simutaniously - in other words - recorded at the same time - no laying tracks. The demos are done in my home studio on a Yamaha Clavinova and all recordings are produced on a USB Jump Drive. I am currently looking for distribution of my original songs - either a one-song (or more) deal or my entire catalog. Being a staff writer for a music label and/or a music publishing company is my immediate goal. I am able to write both the music and lyrics for ALL genre's of music, including Pop, R&B, Classical, Country and Adult-Contemporary. CROSSING OVER!!! WHEN CLASSICAL SINGERS BECOME POP/COUNTRY SINGERS.I realize that sometimes classical singers who sing "pop" or "country" don't sound like what you might hear on the radio, but this is because they are simply singing classically, but the song is pop/country. That is because a classical singer will have learned to sing in a particular way, like how much vibrato should be in the voice for a particular voice type, how to use coloratura (if you can!). There is also a greater emphasis on vowels, breathing, and lowering the larynx. Also, a classical/opera singer needs to be able to sing over an orchestra (not a huge one, usually only strings and 2 of each other instrument), so there is a huge amount of work on diaphragm and breath support. I personally was trained back in college in a VERY small studio (with carpet - uuuuuugh!) and there was no such thing as a mic for a lesson(like i use in all of my vocal lessons for my students) - there was no mic ON STAGE either. A pop/country singer will learn to support their breath, to use vowels differently when singing high, they will also learn to project their voices and use their diaphragm, but not to the extent that a classical singer will. The best example of today's country singer who can go HIGH with her voice - more than most - is Kimberly Perry of The Band Perry. (Those of us who are classical singers - when singing pop or country - need to hold back on vibrato, and not over pronounce the vowels.) I personally cover TONS of pop and country singers of today AND yesterday. I do ALOT of The Band Perry, The Jane Dear Girls, Martina McBride and many more - I also cover male singers' music. Even I have to watch when i go high not to over-do any vibrato. While some professional "POPERA" singers don't sound like a normal pop singers, they certainly don't sound overly classical, especially when compared to their singing of the classical songs. The point is really that a classical singer can sing in a pop/country style. Part of the reason that they sound so "classical" is that they pronounce their vowels very correctly, and in some of the higher sections they puts more vibrato on the notes than a pop singer would. To sound normal, just concentrate on saying the vowels in the same way that you do when you talk, rather than the absoultely perfect 5 Italian vowels that you will be taught. All in all - IT CAN BE DONE!!! I have crossed over myself - although i do promote myself mainly as a session pianist, vocal coach and a songwriter. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU CLASSICAL SINGERS!!
