After playing at film festivals all around, Vimeo Staff Picks has finally premiered the short film Lightningface online in full, from director Brian Petsos. The short film stars Oscar Isaac as a man named Basil Stitt who goes through a transformative experience after being struck by lightning one day. We originally posted a trailer for this short more than a year ago, and now that it has played at fests exclusively, it's available online. This is a very strange, intriguing short that goes to some trippy places at the end. It's great to see Oscar Isaac in this, but I'm not sure what to make of it. You? Trailer for Brian Petsos' Short Film 'Lightningface' Starring Oscar Isaac

"Just one week ago, everything was so different." This looks a bit crazy. I'm not usually fond of posting trailers for short films, but I couldn't help it with this one - it has Poe Dameron in it! An official trailer has debuted for a short film called Lightningface, starring actor Oscar Isaac as Basil Stitt. The description says that "in the aftermath of an inexplicable incident", he locks himself in his apartment goes through one helluva transformation. This trailer has definitely piqued my interest, I'm just curious when we'll be able to actually see the full short film and how long it will be. Hoping this film has quite a bit to say. Watch below. Here's the official trailer for Brian Petsos' Lightningface, direct from Vimeo (found via The Playlist): Official synopsis: An origin story, of sorts--Lightningface stars Oscar Isaac as Basil Stitt, who in the aftermath of an inexplicable incident,

Warner Bros. Puts Sundays In Its Diary

Warner Bros. Puts Sundays In Its Diary
Crafting an impressive short with ideas to burn is becoming an ever-more popular means for first-time filmmakers to get their foot in the studio door. Dracula Untold’s Gary Shore got his start that way, and this year’s Pixels was born from Patrick Jean’s video game-referencing work. Now Dutch ads and short film director Mischa Rozema has scored a deal with Warner Bros. on the back of his pitch film, Sundays, which you can watch below. Rozema’s concept, which he wrote with Kevin Koehler, finds Brian Petsos as a man who begins to realise that he himself and the world around him are not what they seem – indeed, the whole universe appears to be slowly falling apart. But can he trust even his own senses? The short definitely has overtones of The Matrix, Inception and even District 9 in its use of grungy visual style and dystopian ideas.

This week's must see video comes at us care of Dutch commercials producer PostPanic. Directed by Mischa Rozema, the co-founder and creative director of PostPanic, Sundays is an ambitious pensive bit of sci-fi, the story of Ben (Brian Petsos), a man who slowly begins to realise that Isabelle (Sofia Sisniega), the only woman he has ever l [Continued ...]

Watch: Trailer For Short Film 'Ticky Tacky' Starring Oscar Isaac

  • The Playlist
It seems Oscar Isaac likes keeping busy. With two movies out in 2013 ("Inside Llewyn Davis" and "In Secret" which premiered at Cannes and Tiff respectively), and three more coming in 2014 ("Mojave," "Ex Machina" and "A Most Violent Year"), the actor has even made time to star in a short film. And the first trailer is here. "Ticky Tacky" comes from writer/director Brian Petsos and follows a wealthy and powerful man who discovers his cousin/best friend slept with his girlfriend. The brief trailer provides a little taste, and there's definitely a nod to Wes Anderson in some of the staging/framing/set design but the tone is definitely far more hysterical, and it'll be interesting to see what the final shape of it looks like. There's no release date yet, but "Ticky Tacky" is expected to have a festival bow at some point, so keep your eyes peeled. Until then,

DVD Review – Revenge for Jolly! (2012)

Revenge for Jolly!, 2012.

Directed by Chadd Harbold.

Starring: Brian Petsos, Oscar Isaac, Gillian Jacobs, Kristen Wiig, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Garret Dillahunt and Ryan Phillippe.

Owing some money to some bad men, Harry (Pestos) finds his dog, Jolly, dead when he can’t pay up. He sets about avenging his best friend’s death, with the help of his cousin Cecil (Isaac).

May I direct your gaze to that cast list above. Look at it. That’s an exemplary set of names – a heap of in demand dramatic, comedic and method actors. It’s Revenge For Jolly!’s main pull, especially with Oscar Isaac in the supporting role, fresh off the critical success of Inside Llewyn Davis. The film will be noticed, but you can’t expect a great deal of praise coming off that word-of-mouth. Sadly, that cast cannot inject any life into Brian Petsos’ lacklustre script.

Revenge For Jolly! Blu-ray Review

Director: Chadd Harbold

Starring: Brian Petsos, Oscar Isaac, Elijah Wood, Kristen Wiig, Adam Brody, Ryan Phillipe, Garret Dillahunt, Kevin Corrigan, Gillian Jacobs

Running Time: 84 minutes

Certificate: 18

If blockbusters have taught us one thing it’s that the dog has to survive. Classic interpretations of the law have been found in such genre classics as Volcanoe and Independence Dance. Therefore it makes sense to build a revenge thriller around the murder of a dog, as every viewer will be able to root for the hero of the film. At least, that’s how it should be. If Revenge For Jolly! teaches us one thing, it’s that a surprisingly horrific act can result in absolutely no feeling and absolutely no involvement in a star-filled but messy and empty dark comedy. That’s a self-labelled ‘dark comedy’ by the way, as the humour seems to be non-existent.

Brian Petsos plays Harry, an emotionally distant,

Watch The Gorgeous Teaser For SciFi Short Sundays

It was all the way back in June of 2012 that we first wrote about Mischa Rozema's scifi short Sundays. The occasion was the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to back the creation of the film and I was impressed enough with the visuals and pitch package that I threw down a few bucks myself and encouraged others to do the same. Money well spent. The first teaser for Rozema's creation has just arrived online and it looks every bit as good as I could have hoped.Shot on location in Mexico City with Brian Petsos in the lead the film posits a future in which computer power overtakes human intelligence and the consequences of that moment. Take a look at the fabulous teaser below and keep...

Girl Most Likely Blu-ray Review

After the blockbuster success of Bridesmaids, actress Kristen Wiig announced she’d be skipping the requisite sequel to try her hand at a more darkly comic role in a black comedy then-titled Imogene. Its basic storyline – a failed playwright (Wiig) moves in with her gambling addict mother (Annette Bening) after faking her own suicide – sounded teasingly reminiscent of beloved ‘90s seriocomedy Postcards from the Edge. But any hopes I had that Wiig and Bening might recapture that classic Streep/MacLaine chemistry quickly went out the window as the finished film – blandly re-titled Girl Most Likely - unspooled. Less a mother/daughter story than a young woman/weird world yarn, Girl Most Likely is a meandering film that fails as black comedy (it’s not black enough) or plain comedy (it’s not funny enough). Instead, it plays as 104 minutes of quirk, with Wiig stuck in the mediocre middle playing against her strengths.

"Girl Most Likely" To Kind Of Suck

From the moment the film starts with a disjointed flashback, Girl Most Likely feels like a trite and clichéd attempt at comedy. Obscurely named Imogene (Kristin Wiig) is down on her luck after her fiancé Peter (Brian Petsos) dumps her and she loses her job. In a desperate attempt to win back Peter, Imogene stages a suicide attempt. But it isn’t Peter who discovers her; it is their vapid, self-absorbed friend Dara (June Diane Raphael) who finds her, leading to her admittance into the psychiatric ward.
