Blu-ray Review: Found Footage Anthology ‘V/H/S’ Falls Frighteningly Flat

28 December 2012 6:25 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There are a great many talented people involved in the over-hyped, underdeveloped horror anthology, “V/H/S.” It’s a sad sight to see so many gifted filmmakers assembled for a project so misguided. What could’ve been a launching pad for several exciting careers ends up being a mildly diverting curiosity well worth taping over.

Brad Miska’s concept of a “Creepshow”-style amalgam of found footage shorts is certainly promising in theory, but he falters in the execution. At an interminable running time of 116 minutes, the concept outstays its welcome several times over. Miska’s interview in the disc’s plentiful special features indicate that he wasn’t shrewd enough to cut the segments down to sharpen the pacing, while cutting others altogether.

Blu-ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

The wraparound vignette, “Tape 56,” was shot before any of the shorts had been planned, and its disjointed presence in the film is a conspicuous distraction. »

Exclusive: Radio Silence Talks V/H/S Blu-ray

5 December 2012 8:02 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The directing quartet Radio Silence talk about their segment of the horror anthology V/H/S, currently available on Blu-ray and DVD

The horror anthology V/H/S is comprised of six short films made by a host of celebrated directors. One of those filmmakers is actually of a quartet of young directors known as Radio Silence (a.k.a. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Chad Villella, and Justin Martinez). They make their feature debut with V/H/S, after making a popular series of viral videos through their YouTube channel, which has over 60 million views. Their segment of V/H/S entitled 10/31/98, which they wrote, directed, edited, shot, and starred in, follows a group of friends who think they're going to a Halloween party... and get much more than they bargained for. I recently had the chance to speak with these talented multi-hyphenates over the phone. Here's what they had to say. »

Director Ti West talks about his segment of the upcoming horror anthology V/H/S, currently available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Director Ti West is at the top of his game, with not one but two fantastic horror features in the same year. He kicked off 2012 by directed the phenomenal thriller The Innkeepers (which was sadly underseen), and now he directs a segment in the upcoming horror anthology V/H/S, which are now available on Blu-ray and DVD after a successful run in theaters and on VOD.

He is one of six different filmmakers (Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, and Radio Silence) whose unique shorts are combined into one thrilling tale. Ti West's short, dubbed "Second Honeymoon," is one of my favorites, centering on a young couple (Joe Swanberg and Sophia Takal) whose trip takes some incredibly creepy turns. V/H/S – The Review

5 October 2012 7:15 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

The new horror film V/H/S combines the ‘found footage’ genre with the anthology format to terrifying effect. It has no fancy special effects and sparse use of a couple of digital demons. It’s shot with constant low-quality vertigo-inducing shaky cameras, but it’s an extraordinarily efficient horror film, a celebration of rock-bottom production values – and proof of how it doesn’t take bells and whistles to scare us. Each of the five segments is written/produced/directed by different artists who take a fractured, mixed-media approach to their respective stories, all of which are strong. The wraparound story tells of a group of anarchist criminals who are hired to steal a VHS tape from a dilapidated house. They’re told they’ll know which tape it is when they see it but what they find is a stack of tapes and a dead body in a chair. »

Title: V/H/ Directors: David Bruckner, Ti West, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, Radio Silence and Adam Wingard Starring: Mike Donlan, Joe Sykes, Drew Sawyer, Jas Sams, Hannah Fierman, Joe Swanberg, Sophia Takal, Kate Lyn Sheil, Norma C. Quinones, Drew Moerlein, Jason Yachanin, Helen Rogers, Chad Villella, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Paul Natonek Pairing together five unseemingly related short found footage horror movies into one feature film initially appears to be a gimmick that aims to draw in as much money as possible for the low-budget, independent projects. But the new anthology movie, ‘V/H/S,’ which features entries from such noted horror helmers as Ti West and David Bruckner, brilliantly links the  [ Read More ]

Interview: Directors Joe Swanberg, Adam Wingard, Simon Barrett Discuss ‘V/H/S’

1 October 2012 3:34 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Some of the finest names in modern independent cinema may be garnering their largest audiences to date when the anthology horror film, “V/H/S,” is released on October 5th. It combines five horror shorts with a “wraparound” tale in which an assortment of troublemaking vandals (including “Open Five” director Kentucker Audley) search a spooky house for a priceless VHS tape.

This segment, “Tape 56,” was directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, two accomplished filmmakers in their own right, who have collaborated on horror films such as “A Horrible Way to Die” and “You’re Next.” Barrett also wrote and co-produced the “V/H/S” segment entitled “The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger,” which was directed by Chicago’s own Joe Swanberg (Wingard served as photographer and sound designer). Swanberg’s film stars Helen Rogers as Emily, a young woman who attempts to show her boyfriend, »

Brand New V/H/S Promo Poster

10 September 2012 4:41 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Today a new promo poster for V/H/S, a horror anthology featuring horror shorts from directors Adam Wingard (A Horrible Way to Die), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), Radio Silence (a group of directors including Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Justin Martinez, and Chad Villella), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg, and Ti West (The Innkeepers, The House of the Devil), has been released.

In the film a group of criminals are hired to break into a country home and retrieve a mysterious video tape. Every tape that they watch is more evil and sinister than the one before. The found footage style shows well so far in the V/H/S trailer. It sounded like a simple job but upon entering the house, they find a rotting corpse next to the huge assortment of scary videos. You have to see the trailer as it may be the scariest trailer of 2012 so far. »

V/H/S movie red band movie clip. James Stokoe Comic Artwork

Watch a new clip from Magnolia's super-scary V/H/S, starring Calvin Reeder, Lane Hughes, Adam Wingard and Hannah Fierman. Also, we've got James Stokoe's comic artwork included below, which is quite...different should I say. V/H/S is a Pov, found footage horror film from the perspective of America's top genre filmmakers. In the film, a group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house in the countryside and acquire a rare tape. Upon searching the house, the guys are confronted with a dead body, a hub of old televisions and an endless supply of cryptic footage, each video stranger and more inexplicable than the last... V/H/S is available on demand Now, but if you're keen to catch the R-rated film in theaters rather, for that bigscreen scare thrill, then you'd have to wait until October 5th. »

FrightFest 2012 Day Two: Keeping It Real

25 August 2012 3:38 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Day two of this year’s FrightFest and Thn is expecting big things from Sundance hit and Internet darling V/H/S. After a number of lukewarm found footage movie these last few years, could this anthology be the one that saves the format? Less exciting is the prospect of [Rec]3, the latest entry in the Spanish pseudo-zombie series. Whilst the first two are Thn favourites, can third time really be a charm? Especially when the action has been completely removed from the quarantined building of the previous installments (surely the key to their success). Thn is also hoping Irish horror Stitches follows the previous evening’s Grabbers as a low-key triumph for the genre. Also, star Ross Noble is so damn lovely, it’s bound to be halfway decent… right? As Thn is about to discover, FrightFest day two is one of thwarted expectations…
