He left school at age 16, and applied to every newspaper in the Manchester area, finally getting a job at the Ashton-under-Lyne Reporter. After fulfilling his National Service, he applied to every university in the UK, and was accepted to Durham, where he studied politics and economics and edited the university magazine.
