Sundance London 2017 Review – A Ghost Story (2017)

2 June 2017 8:55 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

A Ghost Story, 2017.

Directed by David Lowery.

Starring Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Brea Grant, Carlos Bermudez, and Kesha.

Synopsis:

A man killed in a sudden accident, returns to his family home as a white-sheeted ghost, and watches as his mourning wife’s life changes without him.

A Ghost Story is very much a film of varying extremes. Director David Lowery may have only managed to make it thanks to the hearty sum he picked up from shepherding Disney blockbuster Pete’s Dragon last year, but this is about as far from the ranks of the kind of kid-friendly (or even really audience-friendly) entertainment his name now means to many. It wanders, at times almost aimlessly between the excruciatingly slow and the very oddly comic, pretty much entirely plotless, but for its grand overarching attempts to ironically breathe new life into the dusty old medium of the ghost story.

Taking a page from the playbook of Springwood teens haunted by Freddy Krueger, a patient in a new clip from Dead Awake is avoiding sleep, but he's managed to avoid slumber for over a year, and the psychological toll it's taken is unsettling to say the least.

‘Beyond the Gates’ DVD Review

22 February 2017 10:01 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Graham Skipper, Chase Williamson, Brea Grant, Barbara Crampton, Matt Mercer, Justin Welborn, Jesse Merlin, Henry LeBlanc, Sara Malakul Lane, Caryn Richman | Written by Jackson Stewart, Stephen Scarlata | Directed by Jackson Stewart

Remember Atmosfear? The old Vcr-based board game? Growing up I never had that game, however burgeoning Trekker that I was (BBC 2/Channel 4 at 6pm had a Huge influence on me as a teen), I did have the Star Trek: The Next Generation video board game… Well what if those Vcr games, and games like them, were really gateways to another dimension. That’s the basic premise of Beyond the Gates.

Following the mysterious disappearance of their father, two estranged brothers – Gordon (Skipper) and John (Wiliamson) reunite to liquidate his business, a video store which (besides looking like a film-fans idea of heaven) specializes in horror films. As they dig through the stock, they unearth an old Vcr »

Thn go ‘Beyond the Gates’ with director Jackson Stewart

20 February 2017 12:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Jackson Stewart Interview: Director Jackson Stewart shares all on his fantastic movie Beyond the Gates.

We caught new home entertainment release Beyond the Gates back during last August at Frightfest. The film follows two brothers as they stumble across a horror VHS board game that seems to have a life of its own.

Directed by Jackson Stewart, the film spent last year touring the festival circuit and wowing crowds. It even won the Los Angeles Film Festival’s Nightfall Jury prize. Stewart is a former assistant of horror directing icon Stuart Gordon who has now struck out on his own. Beyond the Gates stars one of Gordon’s former scream Queens Barbara Crampton, and offers scares and laughs a plenty.

We caught up with Stewart, ahead of the UK DVD release, whom spoke of his desire to direct a Lovecraft story, having Barbara Crampton as a friend and whether we »

Patrick’s Favorites of 2016

9 January 2017 4:46 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.

And what about horror on TV? »
