The 10 best… sporting biopics

7 September 2013 4:09 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

From Formula One to football and boxing to baseball, here are the big screen's finest sport sagas

Don't get excited, Liverpool fans: director Ron Howard's latest film isn't about the Reds' all-time leading scorer Ian Rush and his rubbish 'tache. Instead, it tells the extraordinary story of the 1976 Formula One season, dominated by the battle between dashing British playboy driver James Hunt (played by Chris "Thor" Hemsworth) and austere Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel "Good Bye, Lenin!" Brühl). After a near-fatal crash at the Nürburgring, Lauda returned just six weeks later, his horrific scalp burns still bandaged and bleeding, to defend his world title. It's scripted by Peter Morgan, who's made a career out of dramatising real events in the likes of The Queen and Frost/Nixon.

50 Cent Boards Johnny Tapia Documentary (Exclusive)

7 June 2013 4:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Rapper-actor-producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is assuming a new role — documentary producer, partnering with Lou Dibella to acquire rights to “Tapia.”

Dibella’s newly minted Bk Blu Productions and Jackson’s Cheetah Vision Films have joined to present the film, a look at late boxer Johnny Tapia. It’s a Synthetic Creatures Production directed by Eddie Alcazar in association with Eric Drath’s Live Star Entertainment.

Tapia” will have its world premiere  at the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 15, then screen again on June 18.

Tapia” explores the boxer’s mastery with five world titles in three weight classes and his personal demons, including his mother’s kidnapping and murder when he was 8 years old and his drug addiction and near death experiences. Alcazar was filming Tapia in the weeks before the fighter’s death last year at age 45.

The film also features interviews with Mike Tyson, trainer Freddie Roach and Tapia’s widow Teresa. »

Oscar Front-Runner: "Argo" Tops Producers Guild of America (PGA) Winners!

27 January 2013 12:30 AM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Oh yes it still hurts that Ben Affleck was not given a Best Director Oscar nomination, yet his fantastic film "Argo" continues its ascension to Oscar glory! The film took home the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards taking home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

So guess which film will win the Oscar Best Picture? Yup, it will be "Argo!" Why? Well, Hollywood really loves movies about them and "Argo" is about a movie of a fake movie in order to help free some Americans trapped in Iran during the hostage crisis.

And, the PGA award is a significant Academy Awards precursor. Only seven times in 24 years has the PGA winner failed to win a Best Picture Oscar. So "Argo" has a strong chance.

I'm also happy that "Searching for Sugar Man" won the Documentary category, and not so happy »
