Served as General Secretary and then Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). in the 1980s. At his death he was serving as the Vice President.
Between 1958 and 1987 he served in several London parishes and as a chaplain to the University of London.

At the time of his death he was also Vice President of Pax Christi, the Christian peace organization, and Emeritus President of the Movement for the Abolition of War.
