Why Julia Louis-Dreyfus Deserves Her Fifth ‘Veep’ Emmy: IndieWire’s Emmys Endorsements (Comedy)

IndieWire’s Vote: “Veep

It hurts us to think “Transparent” and “Master of None” may never get a turn at the table, especially this year after both delivered such stellar seasons: Jill Soloway’s follow-up far surpassed her already impressive first season, and Aziz Ansari’s Netflix debut showed just how diversity in front of and behind the camera can benefit our culture (not to mention how smart, insightful writing can still appeal to mainstream audiences). But David Mandel pulled off an equally impressive feat by matching (if not besting) “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci’s Emmy-winning prior season, stepping into massive shoes and running a six-minute mile without tripping. The best comedy, nay, the best series on TV remains the one to beat this Emmys season. All hail the queen.

Why Tituss Burgess Deserves an Emmy Statue

17 August 2016 12:30 PM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

The 2016 Emmy Awards season is officially underway! To celebrate, we’re highlighting a few of this year’s nominees whose recognition from the Television Academy feels long overdue. These hard-working acting veterans consistently deliver brilliant performances in everything they do—but this year, in these roles, their work practically demands that statuette of a winged woman holding aloft an atom. Which actors do you think are especially deserving? When Titus Andromedon sashayed his way onto the small screen last year in the inaugural season of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” the world was not prepared for his fabulousness. The eccentric struggling actor, as portrayed by the less eccentric but once-struggling actor Tituss Burgess, had Netflix audiences in stitches. He also gave voice (sometimes a phenomenal singing voice) to working actors everywhere.... Let’s just say it was easy to relate to the character’s pitiful day jobs and hapless “Lion King” auditions. »

Fresh Faces Like Ellie Kemper, Tracee Ellis Ross Buoy Comedy Actress Emmy Race

10 August 2016 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Much has been made about TV Academy members’ recent break from tradition to fill their Emmy Award nomination ballots with new and surprising choices. This is particularly true in the lead actress in a comedy race, where spots went to first-time nominees Tracee Ellis Ross from ABC’s “Black-ish” and Ellie Kemper from Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” Laurie Metcalf has three noms this year across various categories, including her first recognition in this category, thanks to her work in HBO’s “Getting On.”

The new blood could be due to such frequent nominees as Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) and Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie”) no longer being eligible. “There were some incredible shows that ended last year, and that made room for some new faces. My own face happens to be particularly wide, so I am extra grateful that there was enough room for it,” Kemper jokes.

Joining these nominees in the category are returning talent »

Secret Life of Pets 2 Is Coming in Summer 2018

2 August 2016 3:14 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After crossing $300 million domestic and $400 million worldwide earlier today, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have announced that a sequel to The Secret Life of Pets is happening. The studio revealed that The Secret Life of Pets 2 will take the previously unspecified July 13, 2018 release date set by Illumination Entertainment. As of now, the project doesn't have any direct competition, but it is situated right between Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6, 2018) and 20th Century Fox's Alita: Battle Angel (July 20, 2018).

Variety reports that original Secret Life of Pets director Chris Renaud and writer Brian Lynch will return for the sequel, which will be produced by Illumination's founder/CEO Christopher Meledandri and his longtime producing partner Janet Healy. It isn't known if Chris Renaud's co-director Yarrow Cheney or Brian Lynch's co-writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio will return.

The Secret Life Of Pets 2 Announced For 2018 Release

2 August 2016 1:51 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Sensing a familiar air of franchise potential that fired Despicable Me and those bumbling Minions to box office glory, Illumination Entertainment has announced The Secret Life of Pets 2 for release in 2018 – July 13, 2018, to be specific, placing the nascent sequel in close proximity to both Ant-Man and the Wasp and Robert Rodriguez’s long-awaited sci-fi movie, Alita: Battle Angel.

It’s early days on this one, but we understand that Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri is attached to produce the follow-up, partnering once again with Janet Healy.

Indeed, news of The Secret Life of Pets 2 finding a home at Illumination shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given the original’s impressive box office haul. Upon hitting theaters earlier this year, the cutesy animation made history by going on to enjoy the biggest U.S. opening weekend for an original film, animated or otherwise. That figure checked in at $104 million, »

Emmy Awards 2016: Handicapping the Top Series and Acting Races

28 July 2016 11:49 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

That sigh of relief you hear across town is from everyone who made it through the first round of the TV Academy’s Emmy voting. Now, the race begins in earnest to claim the small screen’s top trophies. We took a look at 11 key categories to break down the ones to beat, and the threats to watch out for, before voters cast their final ballots beginning Aug. 15.

Drama Series

HBO’s powerhouse “Game of Thrones” is once again the year’s most-nominated series with 23 noms (down only one from last year). It’ll be tough to beat the returning champ. Netflix’s “House of Cards” is second in overall noms for drama, with 13 (including eight for acting). The swan song season for PBS’ “Downton Abbey” nabbed 11, and though there may be some sentimental factor in voting for a series that never won top drama (it triumphed as a miniseries in its first season), don’t bet »

Paul Feig and The Female Experience

How the Filmmaker Honors Women by Capturing Our World Authentically.

In case you missed it during your trip to Mars: the new, very funny and in some ways, revolutionary Ghostbusters — co-written by Katie Dippold and Paul Feig — stars four exceptional women in lead roles. After much noisy whining and many buckets of tears shed by insecure manbabies, we finally know that the Paul Feig-directed remake is indeed very good, stands on its own as a fresh take on an existing universe and resides harmoniously alongside the original film that came 32 years before it. But that’s not all. We also know that the new Ghostbusters thankfully isn’t just a simplistic gender-swapped comedy that forces male-centric themes onto its story just for the sake of being gentle on the aforementioned manbaby crusaders and skeptics. It is instead unapologetically true to the female experience in portraying its lead characters (played by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig »

Emmys Upstage Oscars In Diversity and Female-Led Programs In 2016

14 July 2016 2:53 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

After Oscars So White, when every single one of the 20 acting nominations were given to white thespians, Thursday’s Emmy nominations revealed far more diversity in the television industry. While the Motion Picture Academy responds well to certain high-end dramas such as Best Picture winner “12 Years a Slave,” those films just don’t come along that often. (So far Oscars 2017 look to tell a different story.)

Unlike the movie industry, in television more shows are aimed at more diverse audiences from the start, which gives 19,000 Emmy voters a wealth of options. The television industry casts a wide net, aiming shows at every audience segment, especially women, who are consistently underserved by the Hollywood studios, despite their strong box office stats.
